Pod 5, anyone available to play this Wednesday the 8th?
Hosted @rtinman13 out at Musgrove Mill today. The typical thinking is that the first time seeing MM is the best since you donât know all the trouble.
The place is volatile and that proved true with only 3 halved holes by my count. Some good and bad shots were had. Good company all the way around with @dclthomas and Mikey joining us.
We did some gifting of holes to each other and I was able to grab some late wins to close it out 3&2.
Definitely benefited from not knowing some of the issues you can get yourself into, but sure managed to get into some bad situations anyway. I can already tell itâs a course thatâs much more fun (or perhaps just less non-fun) to play when the worst that can happen is a lost hole.
Thanks for having me @tigergolftraveler!
Very impressed with you overcoming that cold shank on 13 to pull off the victory. Lesser men would have folded after that.
Happy to have you guys out.
Somehow won the next 3 holes. El hosel smiled down on me.
POD 11 match- @rtinman13 v @dclthomas
Also known as The Bad Sons Cup
As with 1980âs televised golf, we will pick up the action at the 10th. 8 of first 9 holes were won or more accurately lost leaving the match AS. Bad golf both sides with a few sprinkles of ok shots.
As Robbie put it, we were both just cruising along in 3rd gear before I learned to shift. Going par, par, birdie, eagle, par, par to take 5 of 6 holes and close it out 5&3.
Pod 5 action kicked off this weekend at Lonnie Poole as part of the First Flight Buzz the Tower event. Should be noted that the match was in serious doubt leading into the day after @oldpatricksmith sustained a foot injury that only @JamesHCard would enjoy pictures of, but the game time decision was a go. I am getting 8(!) shots.
Hole 1, par 5 - Patrick stripes a drive down the middle and I hit a weak wipey fade into the right fescue. I had to lay up with a punch out, he comes up just short in the bunker but canât get it up and down. Hole is tied with pars.
Hole 2, par 3 - Patrick hits another great tee shot, catches the hill left of the green and rolls back to where the pin was stuck behind the bunker, leaving about 20 feet for birdie on the 200 yard hole. I give an encore wipey fade into said bunker, but I make a nice up and down to tie the hole with pars again.
Hole 3, par 5, I get a stroke - two good mini-drivers off the tee lead to both of us going for it. Patrick misses just short left and rolls halfway down the hill, leaving a tough up and down to a diabolical pin location, I end up just off the back of the green. If I ran my putt more than a foot past the hole I would have had a 20 yard chip coming back up the hill, but I nestle it in there nicely and win the hole with a two putt 4-for-3. I am 1 up.
Hole 4, par 4 - I celebrate a net eagle by hooking an iron into the hazard and make double. Nothing eventful happens to our match on this hole, but shoutout to @Swing_hard_and_hope for holing out for 2 from the trees. Comfy par for Patrick levels the match.
Hole 5, par 4, I get a stroke - both of us have varying degrees of tree trouble, Patrick can advance his close to the green while I have to punch out again. I hit the green from there and two putt for a 5-for-4 and tie the hole.
Hole 6, par 3 - we both hit the green, both leave slightly more than we would have liked to on our par putts, but both make them to tie with pars.
Hole 7, par 5, I get a stroke - not much to report on our match from this hole, we both made relatively straightforward pars and I take it with a 5-for-4. Have to mention @pluds26 hitting one of the most impressive drives I have ever seen, easily carrying the bunker at 295 and going driver/9-iron to the 554 yard hole.
Hole 8, par 3 - I pull my tee shot and luckily hold on the left edge of the green, Patrick is on the right side with a long birdie putt. He runs it past the hole and canât make the comebacker, my two putt par puts me 2 up.
Hole 9, par 4, I get a stroke - the return of the wipey fade leaves me in the right fescue and Patrick in the fairway. My lie wasnât bad, but the shot certain was - hosel-adjacent contact put me even farther right near the first tee box. The attempted hero-shot over the trees predictably does not go well, and we walk away with triple. Back to 1 up at the turn.
Hole 10, par 4 - I pull a tee shot and make such solid contact with the left trees that it almost goes all the way across to the right trees, but stays in the fairway. My second ends up in the bunker that four shots later I would finally get out of to go back-to-back triples. SICK. Back to all square.
Hole 11, par 5, I get a stroke - two good drives, but I hit a chunky layup while Patrick somehow holds the back of this green in two. My third goes long and I canât get up and down, Patrick takes a 1 up lead with a birdie. Also had another holeout for eagle from @pluds26 from 100 yards out, our group best ball score may have broken 60 on the day.
Hole 12, par 4, I get a stroke - both our tee shots bounced down to the left side of the fairway, I hit the green but Patrick ends up in the greenside bunker. He has a tough lie there and can only blast it out to the back of the green and two putt for bogey, I am continuing on the strugglebus with a three putt bogey of my own, but my stroke wins the hold and gets us back to even.
Hole 13, par 4 - I leave myself in a greenside bunker fried egg after my second shot, Patrick hits his approach to 12 feet and would win the hole with par, he goes back to one up.
Hole 14, par 3 - we both hit the edge of the green, me to the left of the flag and Patrick to the right, both going up big hills to get to the hole. He leaves his well short and misses the second, I take a full shoulder turn on mine and still barely reach the hole, but I even the match with par.
Hole 15, par 5, I get a stroke - Patrick hits another good drive while I push mine into the right trees that I can barely get my punch shot out of and have to lay up again with my third. I get a gift when he blades a wedge over the green and makes bogey, a bogey of my own wins the hole with 6-for-5 and I go back to one up.
Hole 16, par 4 - two good drives lead to two wedges in to the green, I catch mine a little thin and run to the back while Patrick gets to 15 feet. I am feeling great about another very comfy two putt par until he knocks his in dead center to get the match back level.
Hole 17, par 3 - very similar to 6, we both hit the green with decent length putts that we both run by the hole. Both again make the comebackers to send the match to 18 tied.
Hole 18, par 4, I get a stroke - another steady drive for Patrick puts the pressure on, but I hit my best struck ball of the day off the tee to leave a PW in, but the return of the wipey fade puts me in the greenside bunker while he has a good look at birdie. I get mine out to the back of the green and start sweating as his putt looks like its in the whole way, but it just skates by the left edge and we tie the hole with net pars to the end match level.
Pod 5.
Goliath vs. Mini Goliath.
I played @Trumpet15 at home (Old Barnwell) this past Saturday in our pod match. For reference Spencer is a stone cold killer. Won an NIT spot his first ever NLU event, Won the par 3 event earlier this month and the only reason he didnt win last years NIT was becuase he was off playing in the US Mid-Am.
I am a lowely 1.something index getting 5 shots from the back tees.
I had not touched a golf club in two weeks. Sometimes that is a good thingâŚ
[Narrator] It was not a good thing
Shots I am getting are on 3, 6, 7, 10, 13.
I double 1 and bogey the driveable 2nd to go two down early.
Use my shot wisely on 3 and win 4 to even the match.
I lose 5, win 6, lose 7, win 8 with the first natural birdie of the day from the group and lose 9 to end AS after 9.
I win 10 with a shot and win 11 with one of the better up and downs of my life.
Onto the home stretch up 2.
I have to avoid losing the par 5s 3 of them in the closing 7 holes.
on 12 I miss a 4-5â birdie putt to extend the lead and say âthis is going to come back to haunt meâ.
I won 13 with my shotâŚ3 up with 5 to play.
my tee shot on the driveable 14th is never found. I am still dumbstruck how this occcurs.
2 up.
Spencers birdie on 15 to my par
1 up.
16 my great up and down 3rd shot and his very adventagous chunk and run 2nd shot end in halved birdies.
1 up.
17 is a chip shot par 3. All I need to do is hit the middle of the green and not chase the back left pin.
[narrator] *he chased the back left pin"
bogey to his par.
AS going into 18.
Two piped drives.
I played the perfect approach to a gimme range (about 10") Still have no real reference for how long that is.
Spencer has 25â for birdie. Never a doubtâŚdraino.
Match ends AS.
Genuinely dumbstruck as to where your ball on 14 went still. And hey we call those power chunks where Iâm from
SC West pod had another match today at Greenwood Country Club. Myself v @dclthomas. I got seven strokes.
Hole 1 - Dustin birdies the par 5 opener to go 1 up
Hole 2 - Dustin misses a three footer downhill to make us all square.
Hole 3 - I make 6 for 5 to beat a double. Pillow fight hole - 1 up
Hole 4 - shouldnt be a top 7 indexed hole but it is. 4 for 3 - 2 up
Hole 5 - an absolute disaster. Dustinâs 6 beats my 8 for 7 - 1 up
Hole 6 - dustin makes 3 to get back to all square
Hole 7 - I hit a chip to four feet and make a putt to go 4 for 3 again. 1 up.
Hole 8 - I yanked a drive left and made bogey - dustin makes par - AS
Hole 9 - lost a ball left off the tee. Dustin lips out a birdie putt and we make the turn 1 down.
Hole 10 - 4 for 3 again gets me back to all square.
Hole 11 is our first halved hole of the day. Two pars. AS
Hole 12 - I hit a chip to gimme range to make 4 for 3 again, but dustin chips in from off the green for birdie. Another half. AS
Hole 13 - Dustin hits a bomb and makes par from 80 yards out. I make bogey and go 1 down.
Hole 14 - I warn dustin of the OB left so he puts it in the greenside bunker right. I hit the green and lag a fifty footer to gimme range and weâre all square.
Hole 15, last pop hole: a forced water carry par 5 - we both lay up. Dustin hits his third about 35 feet left but on the green. I dunk one in the water and hit my fifth about 25 long of the pin. Dustin putts his fourth down about six feet away. I make the 25 footer, 6 for 5 and dustin misses. 1 up.
Hole 16 dustin hits his tee shot to six feet and I come up just short. I chip to gimme and Dustin leaves the birdie putt a roll short. 1 up
Hole 17 dustin hits a bomb in the fairway and Iâm in the bunker left - we both hit our approaches short. Dustin chips to 3 feet right of the hole and I have a 10 footer uphill. We both make and itâs dormie.
Hole 18 is an uphill par 5. Dustin misses fairway right but hits a great second shot recovery and weâre both left with about 100 in. Dustin hits to 5 feet and I am about 30 feet left. I leave my birdie putt on the lip, and dustin has a putt to halve the match.
He left it on the lip.
This is my third year doing CLC matchplay and the first match ive won great day tho. Big enjoyed
Played @tigergolftraveler for whatever pod we are.
Long story short (very fitting) - he got his ass kicked.
What an asshole
@westerj12 and I got in a Pod 10 match today at Longleaf. Let me open by saying that our Merch Mack spent multiple texts claiming his swing was in a bad way, so I shouldnât worry about the 13 pops I had to give.
Then he striped his first drive and hit a wedge off a downhill lie to 15 feet while I flushed one long and eventually conceded the hole.
Second hole JW hits one waaaay left and I fail to capitalize; we both double the hole, which he takes with a stroke. So, weâre off to a stellar start and JW is 2up. I then managed to win the next two (the par 3 3rd and 4th with pars), and get the 5th with a clutch 8 footer for par to Westerâs 7 turned 6. We go good/good on 6 where JW is popping and weâre back even. I take seven with a good par from a wastebunker, we split 8, and then walk to the 9th tee.
Wester tees up the ball while mine sits in another wastebunker, and says he feels woozy. In a real feat of guts, he makes contact with one of the 3 balls floating around in front of him. I hit a great wedge to 15 feet and drain the birdie, while Jon scrapes together a bogey and I go 2up.
At this point, itâs clear that my worthy opponent is in no shape to play and concedes. Happily, it seems to mostly have been a suprise case of dehydration and our good friend is home, resting safe and sound.
TL/DR: Longleafâs front nine tried to kill another FFâer; Doc picked up a win as a result.
Somebody needs to investigate whatâs happening in the Sandhills.
Courses down there taking down FFers left and right!
Glad youâre on the mend @westerj12!
Did the Doc know what he was doing when he asked to play me at his home course on the hottest day of the year so far knowing the walk on the front 9 could kill a marathon runner? Who can say.
What happened to the 90 degree rule?
Take a cart, donât be a hero!
