Welcome ladies and gentlemen. Do I have a story for you.

The Ballad @LukeBoatright vs. @wolfpack888 Round of 32 Match.

Honourable observers @tigergolftraveler @tres_carlos

[Opening credits]

We were to meet at Fort Mill golf club. Members tees @wolfpack888 getting 8 shots.

A really nice golf course that I would definitely play again. Is it worth $72? Probably not but I blame all you jerks from Charlotte for the rate. A very pleasurable round and the pace was great. The greens were in great shape but could have been 2’ faster on the stimp meter in my humble opinion.

[Driving Range]

I had told Jimmy I had know idea who Corey was…then pulls up a person who I immedietly recognized.

“are you corey?” - me

“yes” - Corey

“I feel like we have met before” - me

“yeah at Bryan Park during the helicopter cup” - corey

“sorry, yeah I met a lot of new people that weekend” -me

“Oh, we played together at Bryan park…” - corey

“Maybe I am a asshole, @tigergolftraveler” - me

“No one is arguing that fact” - Mr. Traveler.

Corey left the range 1up.

Hole 1 - I piped a drive down the left and corey queefed 1 in the right woods. I hit my approach to 3’ and made the putt… 1 up

Hole 2 - Driving iron in hand for placement. I am not sure if its possible to shank a driving iron…but I did it!

In the water. Not to be out done Corey dumped his approach in the water and after a pillow fight we both made 6. Corey getting a shot brings the match to AS.

Hole 3 - Par 3 - Pillow fight - halved with 4s

Hole 4 - Good drives from both. Corey unable to reach the green lays up…I hit the smoothest 3wood I can from 250 and flew the green. Yes @Just-a-little-right this is LCP. I am not going to apologize for who I am. Hole halved with 5.

Hole 5 - Par 3 Corey 3 putted, I had a 2 putt par. 1 up - me

Hole 6- Both made bogey Corey getting a shot brings the match to AS

Hole 7 - My length will be my advantage. Corey with a push right and I piped dreamed a drive. Arrive at my ball…in a divot.

Corey lays up BETWEEN TWO BUNKERS. I told him I cussed him for his luck. I hit a great 9 iron to 15 feet and feel a big advantage. Not to be outdone Corey hits a majestic 3rd to 3’. 2nd time on the hole I have cussed a man that by all accounts is a great gui!. Both make pars, Corey with a shot goes 1 up.

Hole 8 - DRIVING IRON FOR PLACEMENT The bad thing is this placement shot went 150 yards…Corey hits his approach short of the green and I have 25’ for par. COREY CHIPS IN! MORE CUSSING

Corey 2up

Hole 9 - I won with a birdie…1 down

Hole 10 - My par wins the hole AS.

Hole 11 - More dumb a hole than 12 if I am being honest…My 3rd shot chip hits the pin. I win with par. 1 up!

Hole 12 - Dog leg left that never really stops turning left. I make par Corey makes 6 but gets a shot. 1up.

Hole 13 - Driveable par 4 (for me). I hit it greenside. Corey hits his drive into a terrible bunker lie near the back of the bunker. HUGE advantage me…or so I thought. Corey hits the shot of the day to 5’. My birdie attempt from 12’ goes in and we halve the hole with 3s. I am still 1up

Hole 14 - Corey receiving a shot gets up and down for par, my birdie attempt slides by and we are AS.

Hole 15 - both miss makeable birdie attempt- AS

Hole 16 - Coreys final shot hole. I made a mess of it and conceded before Corey reached the green. Corey 1 up

Hole 17- Corey missed a 6’ putt to close out the match.

Hole 18 - I need to win the hole and with my .5 advantage will win the match. We both are short of the green in 2. Corey blows his chip 10’ past the hole. He is already thinking about the nervy putt he missed on the 17th. Just chip it near the hole and you likely win, Luke! I hit a fucking piss missle of a chip that is a solid 15’ PAST THE HOLE! it went off in my hands guys

I miss my par putt, 2 putts for Corey to win and he does. Congrats to @wolfpack888 on his victory. He has the hands of a 2 handicap around the green. If he can learn how to work the ball off the tee he will prove to be a real menace around the refuge for decades to come.

TL;DR - I lost. Congrats @wolfpack888

Appreciate the kind words, and reading this rollercoaster was just about how it felt Saturday. Anyone offering driver lessons?

Whilst I cannot hope (or bother trying) to emulate Boatsy’s write up above, I will do my best to sum up another match that took place on Saturday - the Tokyo King @bmasters vs myself.

Due to respective club championships, we couldn’t play at either of our home clubs, so we hit the road to Eagle Chase - one of the few public spots that isn’t going to rip you off to play. Ben was worried about a lack of playing time coming into the match, having not touched a club since destroying @cltgamecock in pool play. I was on IR all week after hurting my shoulder. A pillow-fight was on the cards! Ben was to receive 13 strokes, and we were ready to head to the first tee. A front nine 40 for myself had me 1up at the turn, with only 2 holes on the front halved. The back nine had me a little nervous as Ben was to pop on the final 5 holes, so I knew I had to put my foot down before then.

10th hole - I three-jacked for bogey but Ben had an adventure down the left to finish with double. Europe 2up

11th hole - my drive down the left hit a tin-hat wearing mole and shot left into the hazard. I struggled home to a bogey, Ben made 7 after hitting his approach shot to another green. hole halved

12th hole - Ben made a very comfy par, net bird and I started to perspire. Europe 1up

13th hole - we both went very, very left off the tee. Both made bogey. Europe 1up

14th hole - First things first, this hole is NEVER DRIVER - gentle dogleg right that is tight with trouble on both sides. Ben hits driver straight into the trees to the left of the hole. I hit a comfy driving iron down the right hand side of the fairway. Ben, in all fairness, hit an incredible recovery from deep in the bush (Don’t be nasty!). I hit my 2nd shot to 2ft and tapped in for bird. Europe 2up

15th hole - Perhaps the 2nd dumbest hole in all of Charlotte public golf. I find the fairway, Ben hit’s driver very right and it hits a tree. We don’t see it come running back down the hill. After a lengthy search, we do not find his ball. Ben concedes, it’s a tough scene, but that’s technically that. Europe 3up

16th hole - we were sort of done at this point thanks to the 0.5 lead I started with, but I par this par 3 & Ben makes double. Game definitely over. Europe WINS 4&2 or 3.5&3

Then, in a very unfortunate turn of events, I happen to play the last 2 holes in 4 over par. Ben made 2 very good pars on the last 2 holes, so I’m still feeling very happy to have finished it off before we got there!

I do like @bmasters designing his own routing putting his shot into the 11th on the 13th green (I’m assuming). Also, Group H hogging the Sweet 16.

I’ve had a very long night

I had 107 to the flag from the narrow lay up area before the hole takes the hard right. I just tugged my wedge, hit the cart path and ended up on the fringe of the 13th green. Tough scene.

Round of 32
8.21.21
@Carmstrong32 vs Ben (Getting 2 shots)
@DSimpson as the official scorer and pacer.
Mill Creek Golf Club – Mebane, NC
Hybrid Tees – 6629 yds – Par 72

Hole 1 – 389yds – Par 4
Chris with the perfect drive and even better approach. Stuffed it to 3ft and made the putt for a birdie 3. Chris 1up

Hole 2 – 502yds – Par 5
Two good drives. Drew told me left was dead so I immediately blew my next shot left OB. Chris with the steady par. Chris 2up

Hole 3 – 378yds – Par 4
Two more good drives. I hit my approach in the water short right. Chris leaves his approach just into the rough short of the green. I drop and two putt for another comfy double. Chris lets me off the hook with a 3 putt double. Chris 2up.

Hole 4 – 186yds – Par 3
I almost missed my tee shot and dribbled it into the long stuff 50 yards ahead of me. Make another double. Chris hits his tee shot left. Chips on with another 3 putt. Chris 2up.

Hole 5 – 404yds – Par 4
Two good drives. Both approaches miss the green. Both chips could be much better. I 3 putt. Chris 2 putts. Chris 3up. The pillow fight is really getting good.

Hole 6 – 541yds – Par 5
Both tee shots find the fairway. Both pull fairway metal to go for the green in two. Both find a collection area short right. After two respectable chips I putt first and make my birdie putt. Chris missed his to tie. Chris 2up.

Hole 7 – 359yds – Par 4
I hit a perfect 5 wood to 100 yards out. Chris loses his tee shot right into the woods. Hits a provisional on the left side of the fairway. Stuffs his next shot from there. I knock my approach on and two putt for a par and take the hole. Chris 1up.

Hole 8 – 175yds – Par 3
We both bail left on our tee shots. I hit a chunky chip that just carries a trap and rolls to 3ft from the pin. Chris left himself a longer putt and was unable to make it. I make my par putt. TIED.

Hole 9 – 398yds – Par 4 (Ben popping)
I hit my drive down the middle. Chris is in the rough on the right. We both pull our approaches WAY right to an area probably not seen by most golfers. My ball is sitting up nicely in the rough. Chris finds his ball sunk to the bottom. He does what he can with little green to work with from that lie. I am able to hit it to about 15 feet. I two putt for bogey and Chris 3 putts for double. Ben 1up.

Hole 10 – 307yards – Par 4
My tee shot finds a fairway bunker. Chris pulls his right but he has a look. My bunker shot was VERY heavy and it finds another fairway bunker. I hit again, this time coming up short of the green. Chris hits his approach into a greenside bunker. He gets up and down for bogey while I make double. TIED.

Hole 11 – 385yds – Par 4
Chris with the perfect drive and mine is in the rough on the left. I hit my approach and I thought I flagged it but it is just long into the fringe. Chris plays a safe shot to the middle of the green. I try and bump and run with my trusty 7 iron but I catch the leading edge (which usually plays) and knock it 15 feet past. I two putt and so does Chris. He takes it with par. Chris 1up.

Hole 12 – 518yds – Par 5
Two good tee shots find the fairway. I play it safe and lay up to about 100 yards. Chris goes for it and misses left. I stuff my third shot to a foot. Chris concedes the putt. He leaves himself 30 feet after his chip and misses the putt. TIED.

Hole 13 – 156yds – Par 3
Both tee shots go right. Mine finds the bunker. Chris goes just long of the bunker. We both get on and 2 putt for bogey. TIED.

Hole 14 – 393yds – Par 4
Two more good tee shots form us. I hit my approach in the greenside bunker. I take two to get out and 1 putt for a bogey. Chris with the par. Chris 1up.

Hole 15 – 439yds – Par 4 (Ben popping)
Chris hits his tee shot right and mine is down the middle. Chris is somewhat blocked out from going for the green but plays the slopes and the ball kicks on. I hit a good approach past the pin but on the green. We both two putt for par but I am getting a stroke so I take the hole. TIED.

Hole 16 – 523yds – Par 5
Chris hits tee shot OB left. Hits next tee shot OB right. He concedes. I finish the hole and make par. Ben 1up.

Hole 17 – 187yds – Par 3
Both tee shots go right and get bad lies in the long grass. Chris chips on to a couple feet. Putt is conceded for par. I chunk my chip. Knock the next one on. Two putt for double. TIED.

Hole 18 – 389yds – Par 4
Chris hits a great tee shot to the left of the center line bunkers. I hit mine towards the center line bunkers but manage to miss them. I hit a 6 iron from the rough onto the green. Chris hits his approach on as well, left of the pin. After some deliberation it is determined that Chris is away. He misses his putt. I have a chance to win the match but leave my putt woefully short. Chris makes his 3 footer coming back forcing me to make a knee knocker that breaks right to left to tie the hole. Thankfully the ball finds the bottom of the cup. TIED.

Hole 10 – 307yds – Par 4
We decide to settle the match on the course so we head to number 10 again. I hit another 5 wood up the right side but avoid the bunkers this time. Chris hits driver up the left side and finds the trees. We find the ball and he is able to chunk it out and only advance it a little ways. I hot my approach on the green. Chris hit his approach on but leaves a long putt. He knocks it up to about two feet. I am looking at two putts to win. I nestle my first putt up to a couple inches and Chris concedes. Ben 1up.

Worth noting as well that Drew had a ho-hum 73.

It is with deep regret that I must WD from the round of 32. Life is currently getting in the way of any golf whatsoever and won’t be able to play my scheduled match. Apologies, prior to entering the match play, I believed my schedule would allow some flexibility. A job change put a halt to that. Best of luck to the remaining players.
