The CLC Matchplay - Season 4: Final 4!

Can confirm that keeping track of who is getting/receiving strokes is a nightmare in these scenarios. Multiple scorecards may be your friend.

Thatā€™s my plan. Everyone has their own card for their matches

Nah, you gotta do it all. Sorry. We voted and that was the outcome. It came out 3-0 (you were excluded but we had a quorum)

This is why I NEVER skip departmental meetings because it is how I once ended up with extra work that came with no pay raise.

Took me a little while to decompress (or find the time to jot down the notes) but group C kicked off Tuesday afternoon.

@Swing_hard_and_hope vs @NCLeft - 7/13 - 3:20PM - Lonnie Poole
Was able to sneak out for a humid, hot afternoon this week to kick off group C with NCleft (@turtle812 as witness) It was one of those straight from the car to the first tee kind of days, that worked for one of us. Letā€™s get right to it.

I was giving NCLeft 8 strokes on a course that he openly shared his disgust for before the round. Needless to say I thought that could help me because this was the first course I ever broke 80 onā€¦ quick spoiler I did not break 80 this day.

Hole 1 - Lost ball double for me (should have found it, but thatā€™s how it goes). Super casual FIR, GIR, Par for NC Left. 1 Down

Hole 2 - Two routes to miss the green. I was short right, NC left went off the cart path on top of the hill and bounced down. Strong lip out for me on the par and we push. 1 Down

Hole 3 - NC Left with a birdie while getting a stroke. A bogey for me does not get it done. 2 Down

Hole 4 - I was worried I was going to get shut out, but a par got it done on this one. 1 down.

Hole 5 - Tee ball way left for me, punch out of the junk did not make it out. NC Left chipped in for par and took the hole. 2 down

Hole 6 - 2 GIRs, 2 pars, keep it moving. 2 down

Hole 7 - Two very different approaches here. Big drive found the left rough for myself, which resulted in 2 shots of about 70 and 120 to find the green from there. NC Left found the fairway and topped the next one. Then smoked a long iron from 200+ to about 10 feet. Both ended up with tap in pars, but NC left was getting a stroke. 3 down

Hole 8 - All world up and down out of NC left. With a fried egg lie it was all I could do to make bogey. 4 down

Hole 9 - NC Left went hard OB off the tee. Was finally going to get him. Well I hooked one left as well. Found it and played for my safe bogey. No problem. Until NC left nailed a 20-25 footer for his second ball par, saving a double. He was popping so we pushed. 4 down at the turn.

Hole 10 - Another big left miss for NCLeft, and a simple par for me. 3 down

Hole 11 - NC Left was forced to take a shot backwards / sideways after a rough tee shot. We got to the same place about 105 out after my second, his third, so with the stroke we were laying the same. NC left maybe left himself 40ish feet. I had about 12. Loved this scenario. His 12 footer fell in the back edge of the cup. My birdie slid by. With the pop, another push. 3 down

Hole 12 - Spot of bother for NC Left turned into a conceded hole. 2 down

Hole 13 - Fairway, Green, 2 putt par for me. 1 down

Hole 14 - two great strikes off the tee, but I controlled it in the wind a little better. Tough spot for NC Left turned into a 3 putt. Tied.

Hole 15 - Gosh this was frustrating. First playing partner (not in the match) into the water left, NC Left - water left, myself - water left, last player - water left. After another ball that got lost for myself we conceded early. 1 down.

Hole 16 - Great drive by NC left put the pressure on, and I did not hold up under pressure. Drive found the water left for myself. A decent wedge left a long putt to save the par. NC Left wedge went over the green and opened the door. I lagged it to 4 feet to save the bogey. NC left tapped in for bogey, but another lip out on the day for myself got the match to dormie. 2 down

Hole 17 - A birdie stayed about 6 inches short for myself, and a fantastic up and down from NC left closed this one out. 2&1 win.

It was a lot less dramatic than I would have liked, but the front 9 39 out of NC left was something special to watch! Put me in a tough hole to overcome, and those big pushes on 9 and 11 felt like a BIG part to the win.

Also I donā€™t deserve to win with my 85, so there is that!

Great recap, thanks @Swing_hard_and_hope. It was truly a fun and intense match the whole way through. Even being up four at the turn, I knew the entire time this was coming down to the wire. Itā€™s a tough ask to go from the car to the first tee and have yourself ready for match play, so I thought if I could hang around long enough on the front and take advantage, Iā€™d give myself a shot at the end. As someone who is not experienced in match play, the first hole did well for my nerves and I was able to relax a bit.

Your tee shot on 10 was the first signal this was going to get a lot tighter. Just an absolute missile down the fairway and my ball was somewhere on the range at that point. I knew right there the match was on.

From my perspective, the putt on 9 to halve the hole and my drive on 16 is what saved me. As you witnessed, finding the fairway on the back was a challenge for me.

It was a great match and a great time out there. Competitive golf is fun as hell, even though I needed every one of those 8 strokes. Cheers.

I certainly canā€™t follow the fine recap above by our commish @Swing_hard_and_hope so will keep it brief. Way too hot and humid for pics or remembering many of the details but @janthon8 and myself kicked off Group I out at CC of Salisbury in a late afternoon match. I needed all 5 of the shots sent my way to prevail 4&2. It was a very tight match where we went 8 straight holes (3-10) without a halve.

Sunday saw 2 Group H matches at Eagle Chase in Marshville, a neutral venue in the middle of nowhere. It provided for some fun shots/holes and a couple good matches. It was myself vs @smallz0r and myself vs @wolfpack888, and I was giving 2 strokes to each of them.

Match 1, myself vs Smallz, went all the way to the last where my opponent prevailed 1-Up. The lead changed hands on a few occasions, and it was not without drama. Smallz hitting the wrong ball on 17 when 2-Up was a tough moment, but I like to think he was rewarded for honesty by prevailing in the end.

Match 2, myself vs Wolfie, was a different story. @wolfpack888 can attest to coming in very hot after a questionable GPS route, leaving no time to warm up or hit putts. There were several bad bounces and breaks on the front 9 for him, and I found myself 5-Up at the turn. Talk of a comeback was quashed by the 12th hole as Wolfie conceded the hole, giving me an 8 & 6 victory.

Both great lads, as well as Wolfieā€™s cousin, and good company out on the course. We now all stand at 1-1, waiting to get our doors blown off by @Deven75.

Group E action on Saturday at Oak Hollow in High Point between myself and @BCates. I was getting 12 pops from the mixed tees.

All square headed to the par 3 4th, which is the 6 handicap hole (i guess because it goes over water) so I was popping. @BCates stuffs it inside 10 feet. Iā€™m on the green in regulation. Terrible 3 putt by me and he drains the birdie so he wins a hole I should have halved. Next hole short par 5 (no pops) and he is on in two and a comfy 2-putt birdie. I have 30 feet for birdie and a valiant effort but doesnā€™t break towards the lake like it should have. 2 down.

Rest of the front was solid play from my opponent and less than stellar play from me. We turn and Iā€™m 4 down. However, Iā€™m popping on the first three holes so a comeback might be in play. But it wasnā€™t. We halve 10, I dump two in the water on 11 (bad bad shots), I win 12 (popping). 4 down. Routine par on the par 3 13th and I bogey, 5 down and dormie. I win the next two to make it 3 down with 3 to play. Easy par on the par 3 16th, I make bogey and thatā€™s all folks. 4 and 2.

Very enjoyable match and watching @BCates hit smooth lefty wedge pitches was a sight to see. Overall a great morning out there.

I really appreciate that. I got home and went to look at the pictures I took and realized I only took one. Iā€™m glad it turned out. I had a plan in my head of the pictures I wanted and completely forgot.

I do that like 40x a year unfortunately. Always set out thinking Im making a great IG post that day, showing the best side of a course. And I get home and the only pic I took was of my buddy smoking two cigs at once or something.

I do believe that I will be witness to @PowerFadez and @bmasters going at it during the Triple H event also, I will do my best to gather content - maybe even do my best @Swing_hard_and_hope impression - and provide a write-up after the fact.

There will be heckling, and Iā€™m counting on @raleighdawg to bring some serious shit talk to throw them both off.

Pod F has a match scheduled between myself and @miketerps08 this Friday at Sedgefield Country Club. I have been informed that it is in tournament ready condition in prep for the Wyndam Championship and we can expect to see some very quick greens.

I think I convinced Mike to move up a tee. We will be playing the whites at 6400. The blacks, which are the one ups, plays around 6900 with a 235 yard par 3. Driver on a par 3 is not what Iā€™m looking for.

that hole is a lot of fun

the tees honestly arent going to matter much IMOā€¦the rough and greens are going to be a lot of fun from any of the boxes haha
