The CLC Matchplay - Season 4: Final 4!

Pod M wrapped up action at Longleaf yesterday PM—we played through heat, a little rain, and finished with cool dinner time breezes.

Lots of action:

@CrucialTaunt over Young Max (my 14 yo son and a non-Nesticle) 2&1

CT over @Cody 2up (stirring one putt on the first hole LL’s putting course)

Max over me 2&1

Me over Cody 2&3, in a match that mattered only in the sense that it gave yours truly something to point at and say “at least I didn’t get shut out and I knocked two birdie challenge holes out.”

Too much good stuff to recount—-but CT almost holing out for birdie on a 30 yard pitch from 18 fairway and Max notching three birdies on the back to come back in all of all his matches and make them close and or win are certainly highlights.

That moves CT and Cody along to the next round!

Winning 2&3 sounds VERY suspect.

Group O action continued today with @BarnacleRob defeating @MarkCaldwell 7&6 at the Spur at Northwoods. Although there was a bit of a wait between holes (5-somes on a weekend??), the weather was great, the walk was nice, and the competitors had much to talk about. A very enjoyable round. 5 stars

Pod L update

I beat @yungbunzz in a close match on Saturday. @BrooklynAJ has advanced by going 3-0 in his matches. If @Joezwickl beats Bunzz in their match he moves on. If he wins in extra holes, he moves on. If he loses in extra holes, Joe and I will have to play again. If Bunzz beats Joe, I move on.

It was an exciting match with @Hawk jumping out early and putting it to @Fore20 on the front (Hawk was getting 12). I believe the match got to 5 up at one point. Fore20 turned it on at the turn and the comeback was on.
At one point Fore20 had a 4 footer to tie a hole that if he missed would have made the match dormie. Hawk was a gentleman and conceded the putt. The decision almost came back to haunt him. Fore20 went birdie/birdie on the next two to cut the margin to 2 up with 3 to play.
On the 16th Fore20 hit a smart tee shot with less than driver on a short but tricky par 4. Hawk proceeded to pull driver and hit a beautiful shot to just short of the green. A simple chip on and 2 putt for a par, net birdie, closed out the match. Good thing because Fore20 would have won 17 and 18.
Fore20 played the back at 1 under but it just was too big of a hole to climb out of. Hawk played solid all day, took advantage of his strokes and never really gave Fore20 a chance.
Thanks guys for letting me tag along. It was a great round of golf and a fantastic time.

I think if Joe loses in extras then you move on - he’d have 3 points and you 4, no?

Thanks for the write up captures it all. Was sweating the end.

No pop on 16 so straight up par won the hole

Also had a sick chip in on 11 for par/net birdie that @Fore20 matched with birdie.

Great times out there on Saturday

I think you are correct. Whatever happens, I am glad to have not been shut out.

that really summed up the day as a whole…having to make a 6 footer for birdie to tie the hole, nice

That chip in on 11 may have broken lesser men but Fore20 took it in stride. It really was an outstanding shot. Hawk needed to hole it from about 20 yards short of the green to halve a hole knowing Fore20 was 6 feet for a bird.

Due to aeration it looks like @smallz0r and @wolfpack888 and I are taking the show on the road and playing at Marshville’s finest, Eagle Chase GC, this Sunday. I will be taking both of them on at a course that I played frequently in college - interested to see how I play it now that I’m actually half-decent at golf.

@pmgolf123 and I going to start of Group D matches with one Saturday AM at Hyland. Looks like Pete owes me a few strokes, which I’ll try not to squander. Looking forward to a good round either way, and haven’t played Hyland in a little while.

Thank you for asking @tres_carlos, I was exhausted after the round yesterday so I’ll divulge a little more now. First of all, thanks to @MarkCaldwell for setting this up. This was my first time playing the entire 18 over at the Spur; I had played the front nine only once before. So I’d like to hear what any of y’all might think. Here were my takes: I really enjoyed it. There was a great mix of different hole types. There were blind drives (1,10), short par 4’s (including 14 - what we mortals would consider a “Bryson at Bay Hill”-esque drivable par 4 over water, but if you played short it offered you a Tobacco Road - Lahinch style blind approach over a large mound), some gettable par 5’s, and challenging par 3’s. The trees were pretty fair, terrain good and variable, and over all the greens rolled nicely. Some might say (including myself), that there are a few holes out there that are eerily similar, but I think they each had their own unique shots and looks to them. If you haven’t played it and come through the midlands, give it a look. I’d be happy to join.
