Strapped Season 12: We're so back baby

I’ve never watched the movie or the show. I realize it’s a huge blindspot. But, I love the book and just never felt like anything would do it justice.

The movie is trying to “do it justice” - the show is taking the general concept and doing it’s own thing entirely.

People need to stop expecting movies/shows based on books to live up to or do them justice. Books have an unfair advantage of unlimited detail in the arena of your imagination.

Accept, or hate, the adaption but quit saying “the book was better”. No shit it was. Of course it was.

Judging from other interactions we’ve had on the board, I’m highly confident the show will hit you. Just give the pilot episode a try and tell us if you’re not hooked in.

Like others have said, the show is fantastic and you could even skip season 2 if you wanted because it gets goofy. But seasons 3-5 are also great (including a great post-Wire Michael B Jordan run). Also, Coach and Mrs. Taylor’s marriage is still to me the most honest and realistic tv marriage I’ve ever seen.

Easily one of my top 10 shows ever. Might just have to kick up my 4th or 5th rewatch now just thinking about it….

Does FNL need its own thread now?

Lyla…even if I stopped watching the show because all of that stuff in season 1 was too CW crazy for me. Been meaning to get back into it…

Ok. Put Tami in there too. Better?

Tami all day. For one she’s playing an adult (nice) and also Connie Britton is an absolute queen.

TC’s, “I know I can’t make you whole…” line cracks me up every time.

Have we power ranked Strapped seasons?

  1. SoCal - John Prine “How Lucky” at the end of ep 1 was chef’s kiss. And Max was awesome.
  2. Louisiana - origin story of St Rapeo. Ben was great. Tom the dog. Ferris homage.
  3. Northeast - Bring on the pancakes. Google stop. Tom Sawyer intro for boxing match.
  4. South Carolina - Myrtle Beach ep is an all timer.
  5. Tie - all the rest.

Here is my order.

  1. Louisiana - St Rappeo is an all timer, and Maggie is great. I also find it funny after they get shit for taking advantage of free golf in the NE then basically spend no money on lodging here.
  2. Peoria - Biker gang getting in Neils head is hilarious, and I really enjoyed the guys they played with this trip. Getting the campus tour is great.
  3. South Carolina - Their breaking point in the waffle house is never not funny. Charleston muni looks absolutely sick, the funeral for the kid is a for sure top 5.
  4. Northeast - Bring on the pancakes, the natural gas leak in the hotel, and the maze guy hazing Neil.
  5. Reno - lighting 100 bucks on fire immediately, big randy on the tiny bike. Some good moments with Killer Mike. Is that a welding mask?

I think Baltimore is an underrated series and the one I go back to the most

  • I think this was the first time we saw Neil’s elephant shirt on the course?
  • Soly getting in Neil’s head about being -3 after 12 BUT on a 5700 yd course with a 66 course rating
  • DJ with the fake out “sad music” on 10 only to play it for a real on 13
  • The Lars / Stock 8-iron with the cut of Lars from Metallica from “Some Kind of Monster” doc
  • The AirBnb with the art gallery and Scott the artist who paints misunderstood monsters
  • Attack!! Getting the boys pumped up for the money round
  • we’ve seen some lows out of KVVs game in recent years so it is cool to watch him shoot lights out
  • “Thanks for showing me we can all fly high” Neil to KVV
  • The crabs and Natty Bohs on KVV’s back deck in the fading sunlight looked like an elite evening
  • the final round where the boys were struggling with being tired / hungover and the comedown from KVV’s great round on day 2 was very relatable

KVV celebrating the jumbo bird!

Baltimore is my favorite as well. This scene is the pinnacle of Strapped for me. It reminds me so much of seafood cookouts with my family and friends growing up.

The show is funny (and fun) in ways the book could never be. The book, if we’re being honest, is kind of miserable but in a moving way.

Not a fun read, but a great read.
