Totally did not twig to this on the first watch, great callout!
Respectfully, hard disagree
Really felt like a jury buys the self-defense defense.
Dan, this is categorically a bad take by you.
The movie was good.
The show was fucking GREAT. Now, Season 2 took a hard right turn and got stupid and I’d be lying if I said the last few seasons were AS good as the first and the third. But it was fantastic stuff, with truly emotional moments, a real-life adult couple talking to each other like real life adults, and some fairly good acting across the board. The football became secondary and that was just fine. If you look at the cast throughout the history of the show, it’s jaw-dropping how much talent was involved. The problem with the show is it was continually at risk of being cancelled (and was, at one point) so they had to keep writing as if it was an ending. In the five seasons, three of them essentially end with episodes that could serve as series finales.
It’s a top-25 show of all time for me. I think the movie is fine. The book is fantastic and completely different.
Greebs, buddy, you seem to be acknowledging my take that the show was a hot mess. Started great, sure, but just got lost in the sauce.
Can we all agree that Julie Taylor is the worst though?
TV during the writers strike just went off the rails in general, so I give it a pass there. But I agree, genuinely the seasons when Coach is at East Dillon are really great and sure there’s less football, but the human elements are great.
Cloudkicker does some incredible atmospheric post rock stuff as well. Been a favorite for many years.
Ironically, for a show that was cancelled and resuscitated multiple times, FNL stuck the landing in the S5 finale better than almost any show since. Right up there with Mad Men for me.
people forget Landry fuckin killed a guy
and they let him play football after that!
Including the writers!
It wasn’t a hot mess - they fucked up Season 2 but after that largely rallied. Some of the very best episodes of that show, and therefore some of the better episodes of any show in my opinion, are in Season 3.
And yes, Julie Taylor sucks. But her parents RULE
FNL the tv show and FNL the movie are both great in their own right.
Rewatching Strapped (again x5) and am currently on Louisiana. This will never not make me die laughing:
Neil: “St. Rappeo…who’s that?”
Ben: “That’s you guys!”
Neil: “That’s us?”
DJ" “St. Rappeo?!”
Randy: “Are you being serious?!”
Neil (very earnestly): “Yeah, why?”
DJ: “It’s Strapped you dipshit!”
This right here.
It was his alter ego Lance.
The sanctions intro on this episode is still some of the best content they’ve ever made.
“Do you guys know what the Williams College endowment is?”
