no. the metric is par. end of story.
All the likes, breaking par is breaking par. Although conversely I do think if you shoot say 68 on a par 66 golf course and someone asks if you’ve ever shot in the 60s, you maybe need to qualify that 68 a bit.
Seeing the CEFCU logo on Randy’s scorecard took me back to Fireworks Night at the Peoria Chiefs as a kid. Special connection to this season of Strapped having met @djpie on the hallowed grounds of Bradley University, but I always love Strapped szn. It will never get old seeing Randy and Neil’s friendship and support for each other unfold on the screen.
I think Soly waived the argument for shorter courses not being eligible for the mega bonus long ago. When he consented to the boys being eligible for the mega bonus at Forest Park in Baltimore, he set a precedent and he can’t whine when the boys inevitably play one shorter course per strapped season. In my opinion, playing a shorter course every season/every other season highlights a part of the golf scenes of these cities that add so much to the region’s golf culture. The next two courses that will be featured this season are neither short nor easy so last night will be this season’s isolated incident. That said, if the boys just started exclusively playing courses less than 6k yards that would be scummy.
Definitely reads to me as situational. It’s not like it was a Par 63 executive course, it was just a short regulation course. Would WGC Chapultepec and an event at the tipped-out Dye course at French Lick count differently to a pro’s scoring average for the year? We all know there are situations where you have to qualify the result (ahem @Soly 's ace at the Preserve) but breaking par on a regulation course, even if it’s pretty short I think you’re safe.
I love that there is talk of moving the goalposts to course rating when they still haven’t broken par on any course in the series.
Glad to see the scorecards haven’t changed in 15+ years since I’ve played a PPD course
I’m starting to appreciate the genius of @Soly on these calls. At first I thought he was playing the role of the bad guy. But he’s not.
Soly doesn’t do anything but open the door to make @MerchCzar question himself. All the damage is self-inflicted. Soly is like the psychologist asking an open-ended question that makes Neil think about it, then break down crying on the sofa about things in his own head.
@MerchCzar: I’m having a great day!
@Soly: Are you really? Are you really?
Seems like an unpopular opinion, but I’m with you on this one. I’d like to see the Mega Bonus hit on a big boy course. Not necessarily about yardage because there are plenty of short courses that play tough. However, when you’re talking about a course rating of 5 under par that doesn’t seem like much of an accomplishment given how much Neil and Randy have improved since season 1. Not saying it shouldn’t count, but selfishly think it’d be more fun if they weren’t wavering over it’s validity.
My god this is poetry
The mental gymnastics that occur after the turn when our fearless Icarito is in the hunt for the elusive mega bonus knows no course rating. Under par is under par.
You still need to consistently hit good shots and make putts to get under par no matter the rating.
Icarito should just have Randy take the call next time, and walk away. Let his personal assistant be a buffer.
For @MerchCzar’s sake I hope his first time breaking par is at a more “legit” course but any breaking of par should = mega bonus!
I’d like to see that too but the reality is, with the way their budget works, they’re not going to be able to afford much more than the cheapest courses around and those cheap courses generally play to their base which is poor golfers. You’re not going to find a round for $20 on an actually difficult course.
I’ve heard he’s absolutely flushing it. #harris
Knew it was over when @MerchCzar threw @Randy’s Avon Fields round under the bus. Tough scene.
I disagree, I think we’re beyond the duty to “do no harm” - sowing doubt is mental warfare no matter the target
