Anthony Bourdain was already a mega star and bestselling author when he negotiated his TV deal(s). I love our boys, but they would have close to zero leverage.
Not sure what there is to disagree with. Have you worked in TV or film? It would go something like this:
NLU: You’ve seen our content. We’d like to produce additional episodes for you to distribute on the Golf Channel. We were thinking of a fee of about $xx,000 per episode, with production costs of another $xx,000
Golf Channel: That sounds great. We’d need to have creative control.
NLU: No. We’ll deliver a final product that you can either release, or not.
Golf Channel: Cool. OR No, we can’t do that.
NLU: If cool, then “Great.” If no, then “thanks for your time.”

Of course they have leverage. They can keep doing what they’re doing now.
I mean, they have competent representation. I’m sure they’re (way) ahead of us on this.
I haven’t worked in television or film but I have experienced GolfChannel recorded content that is not actual tournament golf…and it sucks. Their tournament coverage is questionable at best.
I have little doubt that their finger behind NLU content would ruin it.
So I still disagree.
I have and I do. In fact I’m often the guy tasked with making changes to scripts because someone ran an algorithm based on views. If the NLU boys go in with a “take it or leave it” attitude it will be left immediately and an EAL type will be hired to make a carbon copy of the show before they are in the parking lot.
They currently have total creative control over content, production scheduling and distribution. That is worth its weight in gold.
Well I have as well, and I disagree with your assessment. What they have is some good copyrighted content that only gets about 50,000 eyeballs per episode on a medium that pays next to nothing.
Content distributors who operate as you assume one would won’t do well with agencies and law firms if they try to deal with their clients that way. Pitch meetings are generally not adversarial, and there are ways to maintain creative control without making them so.
And if someone wanted to make a “carbon copy” of the show, they could do it now. But they can’t, and won’t, because it’s not a formula, it’s so much about the personalities. There’s only one Big Randy, just like there was only one AB.
I’m not saying it would be adversarial just that they aren’t in the bargaining position you seem to think they are.
The position I think they’re in is literally one where they can get and take meetings with multiple distributors in the hopes of finding a good fit, which they may or may not have already done. I find the belief that just doing so is a bad idea baffling, as is the idea that every distributor they’re unable to reach agreeable terms with will immediately try to steal their concept. As I said previously, their leverage is that if they can’t find a good fit, they can keep doing what they’re doing. If they do find one, then more eyeballs, more funding for the company, more content.
I feel this is relevant.
All the boys really have to do is pitch merch sales.
From my completely half-assed view of their YouTube site it appears their #1 view vid is the 16 second Merch vid. 431,000+ views.
Hey, the Kid Stays in the Picture!
Important to remember in this discussion that they aren’t currently making their money from YouTube, they are making their money from their sponsors, who seem to be completely on board with their vision and 100% “get it.”
This is all a moot point since The Nest provides all the revenue they’ll ever need.
I saw last week Tourist Sauce is on broadcast OTA tv now, I feel like they are figuring out exactly whatever you guys are trying to figure out.
Rocky is a great place to go low. I posted my lowest round here as well @KVV
@KVV can smash it! wow. great episode
Also, that crab boil really made me miss summer for some reason.
Don’t be fooled by the C-Suite (@Soly @Tron) buying the strapped boys a beer (domestic, non-craft).
This is clearly just part of the C-Suite image rehabilitation plan (shout out Sergio/Team Reed) after the scummy sanctions. Just waiting for a video of them paying from some kids’ rounds at Jax Beach to surface.
To be fair, @Soly may have legitimately felt bad about being to push @MerchCzar 's “Icarito Self-Destruct” button so easily. Who can say?
Enjoyed the episode! Nice round @KVV!
Guys, that’s not how TV works.
A lot of the hunting and fishing shows, for example, are shot by independent companies and sold to a TV network, who then make money selling and running the ads.
So NLU could have a deal with Golf Channel to deliver 18 episodes of “Strapped” per year for $x, and they’d pay their expenses to produce the content, edit it, etc. with fades to black where required for commercials, and Golf Channel would run and insert the ads.
The more popular the show, the more prime-time time it would get, the higher the ad revenue, and the more leverage they’d have for the next year of content.
When I lived in southern Florida (shout out Delray Beach) I was involved in a few pitches like this, and we landed two shows. I was mostly a part-time camera man, but I did a lot of the pitch work and some of the editing, too. We had shows on the Discovery and Outdoor Network at one point.
@anon47037505 is more right than most of you are seemingly willing to acknowledge. A LOT of cable network TV is produced by third parties. They have non-network crews, producers, etc.
What a great way to kick off the morning. Delightful episode!
