Match Play started in 2015. Stanford, coached by Coach Walker, was the first winner under the format.
Emma Talley won the individual. Leona finished T2.
(@LPondgolf is one of the few players to participate under the old stroke play and new match play formats.)
Correct. They switched to match play my 4th year, so I played it my first couple years where it was just 4 rounds of stroke play and then my last 2 years as match play. I made the match play with my team my 5th year at Eugene Country Club. We lost in the first round to eventual champion Washington.
Just because I dig this kind of stuff. Match-play records by seed since change in format in 2015.
1-seed - 4-6
2-seed - 10-5, 1 championship
3-seed - 8-5, 1 championship
4-seed - 9-3, 3 championships
5-seed - 4-6
6-seed - 2-6
7-seed - 0-6
8-seed - 5-5, 1 championship
The music at 1:12:40 is outstanding. Kudos.
Thanks to @djpie @sundaybag @Randy for the Hard Knocks-ish treatment of the Stanford Women’s Golf team because now I’m emotionally invested to the point where I am watching today’s scores live update on Golfstat while at work and set the DVR for the rest of the week. Hoping to see Stanford against my beloved Georgia Bulldogs in the match play round!
Going to be tough if the Card goes up against my Auburn Tigers…
Sco ducks, Frank.
For those watching on GC, they’ve already said that Grayhawk is ASU’s home course and will surely continue to say that on the broadcast, but that is inaccurate. I’m sure they’ve played it a few times in prep for this tournament but their home course is Papago and they play various other clubs around the valley to practice. Haven’t seen them post much about being out at Grayhawk when compared to other courses around here.
IIRC the NCAA actually made a rule that ASU men and women weren’t allowed to play at Grayhawk an inordinate amount to counter some of the criticism about giving them 3 consecutive home finals.
I assume the same rule will apply for SDSU and San Diego when the finals move to their next 3-year stint at La Costa though obviously that’s not the same thing.
That wouldn’t surprise me if that’s true. Both the men’s and women’s IG accounts post quite a bit when they play at different courses. I can’t recall them ever posting Grayhawk.
ASU’s home course is Papago. ASU is serving as the “host school” and is running most of the tournament operations. But this doesn’t have any impact on course set up as that’s all done by Grayhawk and the NCAA.
Like it was one thing (and already kinda BS) when they would go to a team’s true home course for a single championship, but three straight years was a bit much. Now, granted, Grayhawk isn’t actually ASU’s home course the way Eugene was for Oregon or Karsten Creek is for OSU, just for a couple of examples.
Correct. Golf Channel pregame show kept referring to Grayhawk as ASU’s “home course” which is inaccurate.
Software failure bucking its head messing up the team scoring
The NCAAs have no business being in Scottsdale in late May/June tbh. It’s not terribly hot this week but last year was brutal. A surprising choice.
It was pleasant for the women last year. I went out there for the first day of match play and it was quite nice. Low 90s. Then got miserable for the men, as it will again next week.
Inexplicable decision for sure (haha, not really, I’m sure some I can guess how it how it happened).
San Diego will make a lot more sense in a couple years.
