Stanford Women's Golf AWITL: Now talking about Rachel Heck's Decision

A win for “reinstated amateurs are bullshit” camp. Wants to play in those USGA events and is making the hard choice to ensure that!

Something sad about someone that talented going straight to private equity, but it’s her life.

also just had this thought… it seems she is not required to serve after graduating because she was not on scholarship for ROTC. She was on a golf scholarship and decided to do ROTC for fun.

I dont want to diminish any profession, but private equity as a career was not where i saw the essay ending.

I assumed she was going the reserves route instead of active duty but this is an interesting thought.

When you’ve got that kind of job lined up, makes sense why you’d rather not grind out Symetra/LPGA events waiting for the big break.

When she graduates from Stanford with a degree in Political Science, she will begin an internship in private equity and be pinned as a Lieutenant of the United States Air Force.

I assume she is doing either AF Reserve or Air Guard which is pretty standard for a lot of ROTC grads.

hahaha… This thought is sick! But unfortunately nothing in the Military is free. Not everyone in ROTC is under scholarship, most are not. Her uniforms, training, etc all cost someone money. That is why you can make it until day 1 of your Sr year until you absolutely have to serve X years of service post graduating. 4 years if you elect active duty, 6 if you go Air Guard or Reserves.

ok so she passed that threshold and does have to do some level of service.

was basing my thought of this from UAB’s rotc program.

Frequently Asked Questions - Army ROTC.

IIRC, it’s not always up to the cadet whether or not they go active or reserve? May be different depending on branch. Friends I know (both NROTC) were required to do active service, no option for reserve.

Would be curious if Heck has to apply for some exception of some kind in order to do private work and reserve service immediately after commissioning.

right! Not only which service ROTC you are in, but what you want to branch (specific job field) in. Doing a pod with her tomorrow and will ask.

@Cody Pretty sure she got assigned to public affairs post grad, with location TBD. Obviously she’ll have more info.

Also, I’m glad for her that she feels confident enough in herself and her options to make this decision. She even references that her body might not even have held up on tour. Many people’s identity would’ve been so wrapped up in being an elite golfer that they would have to turn pro, or else what do they have, even in light of some pretty serious injuries.

Going into PE will elicit eye rolls, for sure, but it’s definitely gotta be an attractive option in giving up pro golf.

Edit: Sorry PE doesn’t equal bad from my end. Just anticipating the reaction in here.

I like to think it’s more of an Alonzo Mourning gif type response.

Instead of plying her trade as a pro golfer she’ll get paid, contributing her talents and Stanford education to the continued financialization of everything.

Also, it may just be me but it absolutely sucks seeing someone with her talent and personality go into just the soul sucking corporate empire that is PE.

Never lose you love for life Rachel. I’ve never (nor probably will) ever meet you - but watching the “week in the life” your positivity and love of life is contagious. You could tell you had more excitement in your teammates accomplishments then setting a course record.

As someone who constantly strives to carry an exuberance of life and joy - I envied your genuine love of others and life.

you know, there are a million different flavors of private equity and this idea that it’s some sort of universal bad is ridiculous, right?

Yeah, I mean for sure. Nothing is a monolith except for monoliths.

It sounds like she’s going into military service (see @oski post above) and is taking a summer internship in PE.

Why don’t y’all chill out.
