Saturday June 28th, we will be taking over Napoleon Golf Club for the second edition of the Rust Belt Rumble. NGC is a small town municipal 9 hole course. This course and its super, Tom Schwab, were the subject of a fairly recent episode of The Fried Egg Podcast. I believe we will be the first group to ever be granted the entire course for a day (minus a few old guy regulars going off at dawn who would raise hell if they couldn’t). The course is about 45 minutes southwest of Toledo. If anyone needs a hotel, there are a couple cheap options in napoleon, and basically unlimited options along i75/475, depending on which way you’re coming from.
We will be playing four different nine hole matches of different formats. We will be changing up tees and having new holes cut at least once during the day. Lunch will be taken care of by the course, likely brought in from a local BBQ spot.
The cost for golf, cart, and lunch will be $84 per person, as long as we get a full field of 32. We will likely tack on a little bit for a charitable donation, so the final price will likely be in the ballpark of $100, but I will finalize that a little later.
Signup sheet is linked below. Please add your name under your roost. If there are no spots left under your roost, please add your name to the wait list. Down the road we’ll have everyone sign up on Unknown, but I’d like to have the rosters finalized before we do that.
I have been looking for a good excuse to play this course after that podcast. Having the whole course will be awesome. May not get to have random golf vloggers show up like last year.
Being that it’s June, and we will have more daylight and HOPEFULLY better weather, we are also free to play more golf after the competition, until we run out of light
Really stoked for this since I missed last year’s. Love a little meaningless competition, plus it sounds like you’ve got the makings of a killer event
Played the course with @RobThuss last year on a “hey who is free this weekend” discord message. Awesome awesome course. If you aren’t playing your second shot from below the hill on the left on the first hole, you aren’t living.
I’d also add a TBD to this post… after I heard that podcast, I actually shot Tom a DM through Instagram offering up some NLU manual labor, if he was interested.
I offered to hit the refuge recruiting any and all in the area to come and have a “Bunker Party”, and (with his direction of course) we as a community could have a hand in rebuilding some of the bunkers there that are most in need of attention.
I thought it’d be a fitting opportunity for those willing and able in the community to give back to the game that gives us all so much.
He appreciated the sentiment and seemed genuinely interested, though he stressed that there was still a lot to figure out and get approval on with the city and budgeting, and what not. He also added that one of Doak’s associates had also contacted him after the pod and was set to visit with him the following day. Could be some good stuff happening there soon, I for one can’t wait.
P.S. Wait till you see the little league field there in Napoleon, 11 year old me would have lost his mind! So cool.
So this morning, after seeing I kicked out of the FCF Slack for no reason I could ascertain, I assumed it was because people are mad about the choice of date and some unkind works were being said. I decided to go back and check the planning chat for the event, and I realized we originally agreed on June 28th as the date. I set the wrong date in my calendar, and that’s what I emailed to the course. I have sent an email to the course to request the date change, and I will update everyone as soon as I hear back from them. My apologies. I didn’t realize I’d made the mistake, and it was not brought to my attention once I had confirmed it.
