Roll Call: Wisconsin - Madison vs Milwaukee

I know this is primarily for golf, but college apparel brand Homefield Apparel is dropping their Wisconsin line at the top of the hour. The gear usually has more vintage and unique logos/scripting and it’s high quality stuff on top of that. Thought this group would be interested.

I’m personally not a huge fan of Grant, but if you don’t mind super extra quirky it’s in a nice location. Oakwood is a much better course if it’s not wet.

Got any more information on this place? Looks sweet but a bit run down? Doesn’t even have a website

It’s tight with small greens. Conditions are usually decent.

Despite having maybe the worst name of any course The Baths is (are) pretty sweet.

Not as good as The Sandbox. Thought the putting course was better than Erin Hills’ though.

Trip recap post. Thanks everyone for the advice!

Washington County. Can’t beat it for $30 twilight! Wasn’t hitting it great this trip and I felt like the greens were pretty narrow so I didn’t hit a lot of them or play too well. Seemed like a pretty challenging course regardless. A distant third on the trip, but definitely still a solid course that requires some course knowledge.

Lawsonia. All the buzz about the place is true. Everything sucks except the course lmao. The bunkers were in a sorry state. There’s no way a course with bunkers in that shape can be in the top 100 of US course imho. That said, it was so cool to see this place after growing up playing Spring Valley. L&F have perhaps the most distinctive style ever. The front 9 was a surprise. I imagined the whole course was going to be exactly how the back 9 was. I think I prefer the front 9 actually but the second 18 we all thought the back 9 grew on us more. The course is kind of stressful with the demanding shots, but we had a great time.

University Ridge. I was at my wits end from
over golfing and over partying the previous 7-10 days. It was hot as hell, pissing rain for the first few holes, and we stupidly walked because cart path only. We also started on hole 10. Man what a course though. I wish I had played it in a better mental state and in the correct order. We were all very impressed and want to make it back up very soon. I think most of us liked the overall experience better than Lawsonia. Really happy I added this place late in the planning.

Wisco folks - need some help. Going up to Door County for a wedding next weekend and looking for a place to play with my wife. Any suggestions or must plays up there? Looking for something playable and fun. Def not looking for a championship test. Lake views would be a bonus!

Peninsula state park!

Not a lot of must plays up there in my opinion. Peninsula state park is good, and they have a cool 6 hole short course as well. The orchards is always in decent shape but it’s your typical Midwestern golf course. Not a lot of vistas of any sort. I think there’s a decent private course up there but I haven’t played it. Horseshoe Bay I think?

If you can get on horseshoe bay, do it. It’s private, but semi accessible.

Peninsula Park is good, but busy. Orchards is a good option. You want truly just a place to play, I learned to play at Maxwelton Braes is always available. Idlewild in sturgeon bay is also decent, especially if it hasn’t rained a ton.

Following @midwestgolfbum with Horseshoe Bay, you can on with relative ease.

Hello Wisconsin gang! My dad and I are road tripping from Minneapolis to play 36 at Lawsonia on 8/8 and I was wondering if you guys had any other suggestions around that area or possibly west of that area to check out as well that aren’t named Sand Valley? I tried to get a round at Wild Rock the day before and they were already booked.

Wild Rock is great! If you’re driving through Eau Claire, check out Wild Ridge. Otherwise, Lake Arrowhead also has two nice courses.

Slightly out of the way, but Sentryworld is worth playing since the renovation.

This is more accurate.

Ok, you may have a point there. Still a decent option for them though. Not sure if Sentryworld will be open by 8/8 but that’d be a decent option too.

Oooo I’m interested in lake arrowhead takes. Played there in the 4 ball this year. What’s the NLU consensus on them?

Played in the last 2 four ball events there. My takes are terrible, there’s no doubt.

I like the Pines. I think the Lakes is always just meh to me. I’m probably in the minority on this but that’s my opinion after half a dozen rounds on each.

This is the correct take. Hence my 1.5 number above.
