Roll Call: Wisconsin - Madison vs Milwaukee

Scratch that. They are not taking outside play because of Covid.

Just booked as a single at The Bog for 9:20 on the 14th if anyone wants to play there.

Sand Valley developer planning another 18-hole golf course at resort

Sand Valley
The developer of the Sand Valley Golf Resort is planning to build another 18-hole course to the north of the existing resort on around 850 acres in the Town of Rome near Nekoosa, according to documents submitted to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

The proposal also includes 17 single-family homes on lots ranging from five to 22 acres.

The resort, located in Adams County just east of Petenwell Lake, has quickly become a top golf destination in the country since opening its first course, called Sand Valley, in 2017. A second course, Mammoth Dunes, was opened at the resort in 2018 along with a par 3 course called The Sandbox. Work on a fourth course, called Sedge Valley, is also underway at the resort.

A Sand Valley-affiliated entity, Archer North LLC, purchased 858 acres directly north Sand Valley last week for $1.8 million from a Seattle-based timberland company. Michael Keiser, the developer of Sand Valley, said at the time there was nothing he could share about the purchase and reiterated that position when asked about the DNR documents.

Another Sand Valley entity, Wisconsin Dunes LLC, submitted a stormwater management notice of intent in hopes of beginning clearing, grubbing, tree removal and grading of the site. The documents list a Sept. 21 start date for the project and a completion in September 2021.

A Vierbicher concept layout of the planned fifth course at Sand Valley in central Wisconsin.
Each of the resort’s courses has attracted top golf course architects with Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore designing Sand Valley, David McLay Kid designing Mammoth Dunes and Tom Doak working on Sedge Valley.

The documents submitted to the DNR do not identify an architect for the fourth 18-hole course. They do show a concept plan routing on around 215 acres with a variety of different length holes, suggesting the project is more than another par 3 course.

Another 316 acres would be used for forest and undergrowth restoration, 172 acres for prairie restoration and 132 acres for restoration of dunes and berms. The single-family homes would cover around 233 acres.

The DNR’s review of the proposal did identify potential issues with threatened or endangered species, according to the documents. It is unclear if those issues have been addressed.

Great news, although odd as I thought they had already paused work on Sedge Valley earlier this year. Also I hope this is close to the actual routing as #4 looks SICK

Wonder if Doak paused the work? Who’s to say.

This will also bring the SV property adjacent to the Lake Arrowhead courses. Google really needs some updated aerials of this region.

This is where the Lido will be, based on my understanding.

I believe the Lido property is directly north of the entrance to SV and west of Lake Arrowhead. Not sure where Sedge Valley would be, but my guess would be on the west side of the SV property, opposite of MD

Hey All, wanted to say that if you have not yet played Reedsburg CC I would add it to your list. Played there today and it is a great track. Food was very good as well.

Based on the last name, we have likely met at one point or another, but welcome to the Refuge. We have a few other Madison guis around here, as well. Where do you play most of your golf?

Don’t forget to sign up for the matchplay that is going to be starting next spring.

An update for all on the matchplay, as of today we have 21 total guis in, which for something we still have time to get more folks involved, I’m pretty happy with. Looking like we will have a decent group of people from both Madison and Milwaukee, so will do some pairing based on that once we get things finalized come spring time and do the best possible to get others who are close together as many matches as possible.

If you have any friends who want to play but aren’t on the refuge, first of all, why the hell aren’t you having them sign up, and secondly, feel free to have them sign up for it as well. As long as we have an email, we can get things taken care of in terms of getting information out to them. I would love to get this up to 36 or so, so come end of year, we can have a VERY strong showing against the chumps from IL and MN for The King of the North (shoutout again @chrisisoutrunning for the name).

Once we kick things off, my hope is that even if you’re not playing in the match, you can try to have others #getinvolved and you welcome other refugees to play, assuming it doesn’t mess with the ability to figure out times.

Random post that may amount to nothing.

A buddy and I have been trying to find a weekend to meet up all summer and we settled on this Sunday at LLB. Well, he’s ghosting me a bit, so I’m not sure if he’s actually going to show. If I hear back that he can’t make it for whatever reason, would anyone be interested in joining me at 11:12 this Sunday?

Obviously I’ll do my best to give you as much notice either way as possible.

I’m playing Sunday already, but honestly, I would love to play LLB solo. That sounds heavenly.

Played Erin Hills for the first time yesterday. Simply amazing place and I’m already eager to go back. Father-in-law aced 13, which will be a memory for a lifetime.

Anyone want to join me at Lawsonia Links this Saturday? I have tee times booked for 9:10 and 1:40 but my partner can’t make it now. I’m driving there and back from Northern IL. Ignore the fact that the high is under 50 degrees. LMK

Played Lac La Belle yesterday. Had a good time playing with an older couple. Course was in pretty good shape, though some of tee boxes were a bit beat up and/or not mowed in a few days. Had at least three opportunities to play well away from the hole to get it close.

As others have said, needs some time to grow in, but it was worth the $75.

Other thoughts.

  • It took us 4:45 to play. Starting at 11:12. So yeah, it took 4:45 with 12 minute tee times… The first 10 holes were clear sailing, then just hit a wall of groups.
  • I think the course generally blends together well, save for the drive on the 12th hole. You’ve got a decently wide fairway that narrows a bit in between two ponds. No bunkers, no rough to speak of to slow the ball down if you’re off line.
  • Mask requirements are not overly adhered to…
  • I almost wish I had taken a cart, solely to have the GPS to be able to see the overall layout of some of the holes.
  • The putting course is great. Not quite as big as the Drumlin at EH, but right outside the door to the bar. Easy access.
  • Oh, and fix your damn ball marks people!
