There are at least 4 other private courses I’d try to get on before NHCC.
The recommendation for NHCC was as much out of convenience to the highway than course conditions/atmosphere. I adore the place, but you’re right, there are a lot of other private places worth playing if travel, price, etc. are not a factor around Milwaukee.
I personally love the Oaks, just had their bunkers redone in the past two seasons, did some work on their green complexes as well. The tough part is it may be slower moving especially on a weekend as the front is basically asking you to play out of neighboring fairways.
I HIGHLLLLLLLLLLY recommend trying to get in a round at Pioneer Pointe. It’s been open for 4 (?) years now, but seems to continue to fly under the radar. It’s a short course (12 par 3s, 1 par 4), but the conditions are unmatched. You also determine the tee box on every hole, normally they stretch between 20-40 yards long so you can control how far you’re playing which is an awesome concept in my opinion.
Uhh, we don’t do that here.
Mostly because of this and the very real chance you die. It also having some of the worst holes in the state don’t help.
TumbleHawk is great and a really, really solid shout out for all the reasons you mentioned, though.
I’m new here! Do we hate the Oaks in here? I definitely get hate from some Milwaukee friends about the Oaks, so I’ve heard it before lol
Grew up in the Madison area, doesn’t change how terrible that place is (for me). Having to wear a flak jacket and helmet with full face is certainly not a feature. Follow that up with 9-14 being just awful, awful holes and you have just an all around bad experience.
However, you like what you wish, I won’t ever tell you that you can’t.
Someone rang? I felt there was a positive mention about The Oaks. Im here to squash it.
RIPIP
After further consideration, I will withdraw my statement about the Oaks being a place to go. I’ll replace it with try the new front 9 at Prairie Pines!
Smart choice
All my homies hate the oaks
some guys just aren’t meant for the mean streets of public golf
Need a SOMG (sons of muni golf) with the sons of anarchy logo on a tshirt
@blakehall thought he was funny buying me a shirt that just said “public golf” on it from Landmand
Jokes on him, I love the shirt.
Grew up on this course and got back home to see some of the updates last summer. They’re doing some really great stuff! I know they have plans to continue chipping away at the rest of the course. It’ll take time but I’m so happy to see old ownership as far away as possible and people who care investing in it.
Greetings from STL (confluence)! I’m going on vacation near Kohler/Sheboygan in July.
Whistling Straits courses and Blackwolf Lodge are very close but it looks like the price tag is gonna be north of $500… which is not really doable for a teacher. Any hidden gem courses or secrets to get a better rate?
** we did the Lake Geneva thing last year and loved it!
Kohler and “cheap” or “affordable” aren’t things generally put in the same place. Driving down to Milwaukee area, over to Lawsonia, or to the Fox Valley/Green Bay areas are going to be the best bet for more affordable golf, though also means it’s a bigger time commitment.
What @midwestgolfbum said. Whistling realistically is $800ish just for golf and caddie requirements, the other three courses are gonna run between $450 - $750 depending on the specific course and how you decide you wanna play it (ride, caddies, etc.). Washington County in Hartford, an hour ish from Kohler / Sheboygan, is one of our favorites for a good price.
Thanks for the info guys. I’m open to driving an hour to play golf, but I don’t think leaving my wife and kids without a car is an option on this vacation. Well, not an option for them.
How’s the walk(or ride if need be) at Quit Qui Oc Golf Club? The reviews are decent.
What about “The Bull at Pinehurst Farms”?
