Do not stay at the Hotel Harrington.
With kids that age, the Moxy, AC and Motto probably aren’t the best options. The Kimpton Hotel Monaco isn’t my favorite either. Aside from those, any Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, IHG or Sofitel group properties in Penn Quarter, Capitol Hill, Federal Triangle, Foggy Bottom, Southwest Waterfront or Navy Yard will be solid and within walking distance to some great spots. There are also some fantastic independent or smaller chain hotels like The Jefferson or the Hay-Adams. Pricey, but big on the regal/historic vibes and superb accommodations & service.
If you are OK with being outside easy walking distance to the string of Smithsonian’s and monuments that extend from the Capitol thru WH and Lincoln Memorial, then consider staying up by DuPont Circle or even somewhere on the south side of Georgetown.
Edit: basically, these are your targets, and the closer you are to the National Mall (that big lawn running East-West from the Capitol to Lincoln) the more walkable everything is:
Overall you’ll have a lot of great options, DC is awash with quality hotels in fun neighborhoods. And Thurs-Sun are perfect, rates are usually lower on weekends (the bulk of travelers to DC are here on business and therefore fill up the hotels on Mon-Thurs). For example the Marriott Renaissance and Marquis properties often have weekend nights at rates 30-40% lower than weekdays.
Also, be sure to fly into Washington National (DCA) and not Dulles (IAD) or Baltimore-Washington (BWI). Don’t fall for discounted flights into IAD or BWI, you’ll get whacked for a few hundred bucks on a cab or Uber from either of those.

Thank you for this. Any experience with Hyatt House at Wharf?

Very nice area and not too too far from the Mall. I love the Wharf, but a lot of people will point to how “sanitized” it is - it’s all new construction and perhaps lacking in an authentic feel.
Still, not a bad place for a tourist to stay at all.
You could probably find cheaper options that are still nice, though.
We stayed down there for a couple nights. Ubered to the zoo, and then walked over and did a twilight but top tour. The mall was much less of a hit with my kids.
Not specifically but it’s a hoppin area on weekends.
That’s also right by the new Spy Museum, which is spectacular. Some exhibits might go over your youngest’s head but still very very cool.
Hey y’all,
I moved to DC from east TN last week and would love to find some local guys to play with regularly. Also new to website even though I’ve been following NLU for a while, so any and all help/suggestions are welcome!

Good evening fellow refugees, I come looking for some local knowledge. I’ll be at Fort Belvoir in early July and was thinking about bringing the clubs with me. Has anyone played the course on post and if so would you recommend it? Appreciate any feedback
I played it once probably a decade ago. I remember it being pretty average, Andrew’s is a little better and not that far of a drive from Belvoir.

Played a golf marathon for the first tee there a few years ago.
Some quirky fun holes, and a fair amount of topo change, but nothing really special.

If you’re in the military, ask around on base at Belvoir if someone can get you on at one of the Army-Navy Club courses while you’re in town. Belvoir is fine but ANC would be sweet. Most of us here are mere mortals (civilians) so won’t be much help.

I am in the military but I’m only in town for like 3 days so probably not long enough to make a connection to get on one of those courses. I will absolutely remember that for future trips though, thanks for the info.

Hey everybody, I’m new to these parts (the Refuge, not the DMV) and am always looking for fellow weekend warriors who want to play. Picked up the game a few years ago and play around a 14 handicap. Live near Mount Vernon and love playing any and all of the local tracks! Would love to join the Roost and/or Discord server.
