Roll Call: Virginia

Yeah I’m a big fan of Mike Stranz and have played a few other of his tracks and RNK became a must visit. And the two play for $94 deal is stellar.

That is a great deal, and I think this is a great example of his work and it’s so different. I’ve lived here most of my life, and it feels completely Foreign. Not like Williamsburg at all.

Assume everyone noticed there’s going to be a Crash Course for RNK?

This is a guide for the course. It’s sometimes available as a printed sheet in the shop, but not always. So I digitized it and added some additional notes.

*Just changed sharing settings so anyone with the link can view it.

I love #1 keep it pin high.

I’ve never ever been able to see the flag.

LOL. What I love about Stranz is that I either disagree with or did not execute 1/2 of what @Smidler says there, and I still shot a good number when I was there last week. LOL. I’m really baffled by the high slope/rating of the course. Both times I have played it I have been 3-5 strokes below my CH.

But we can all agree with the horrible placement of the white tee box on 16.

Yes that will be fun to see.

Fer shure. Worst hole out there if playing the whites.

It’s weird. The tee box and the yardage book never jived… but I’m never confident in my game after 15.

I’d suggest blues or one forward, and if your having too much fun you can play the whites.

I’ll have more Monday when I get home, but yeah 16 was playing into the wind, i cut the ball. I hit a 2h pretty straight, through fairway on what I thought was a semi conservative line. I had like 215 in still. That’s a huge forced draw if you want to have any kind of scoring club.

@Smidler thanks for the notes, saved us a few shots for sure. That place on a windy day is a good test, I have got a damn c- today.

Pretty penal on bad shots. Like the other stranz I’ve played, if I played there every week it’s really not as hard as it seems.

RNK…best greens I’ve played all year by far, I want my club to switch to those bermuda greens something real bad.
got there around 2, we never waited for a single shot until hole 17. 3:30 round for 2 of us riding, first time here, usually Stranz takes forever but this was much better flow.

the green complexes are so big and vast on a few of the holes, #10 for instance I don’t birdie if its up top, but down low was a much different hole. 10/10 will play again, and for the 2 play for $95 golf moose deal, it was the best value round I’ve played this year as well.

the day before we played Riverfront in suffolk

HUGE greens with big time buried elephants here. Doaked out for sure. Vibe and price were pretty good, def not a course to walk either. Lots of houses but not really in play.

That pin placement on #12 is a tough one. By far my favorite course in VA so far. Looks like fantastic weather too! #18 is my current favorite hole.

If anyone is interested I’m gonna be out with a couple guise at olde mill in laurel fork just above the state line of nc on Memorial Day. Last year we played 36 in 6 hours for $65 and the place was in pristine shape. Have 3 already, would like to have a little 4 on 4 Ryder cup type day or something…if anyone is interested lmk gonna post this in the nc thread as well.

Anyone got any strong takes on Gold Course @ Golden Horseshoe? Playing River Course @ Kingsmill Fri 6/18 and buddy wants to do Gold Course that Saturday (I’m thinking maybe Colonial Heritage or drive up to Royal New Kent). I’ve played Green Course and thought it was very “meh” - what say you lot about Gold?

I played it in December so it was cold and grass was dead so I wasn’t blown away. The finishing stretch is very good, though. I would play it over the others you mentioned.

I think it depends on what else you are looking at. Some people really like Colonial Heritage. It might be my least favorite course in the Commonwealth so I’m a bad person to ask.

I haven’t been since the reno… but I can absolutely say that the best rolling greens I’ve played all year were at RNK (champ bermuda was fast and firm)

I had a similar experience to the other guy, played it late in the year when the conditions were just OK. I enjoyed the layout. I like the Green course and played it often when I lived in the area, but I wouldn’t let your opinion of the green stop you from playing the Gold - they are very, very different. I would play there over Colonial Heritage. I would guess most people would suggest RNK as the best alternative, but I haven’t played there, so I can’t compare.

damn looks like golf moose took the 2 play at RNK for $95 down

can confirm RNK greens are primo RN.
