Shenvalee right off of 81 in new market would work
Sly fox is off of 66 near the 66/81 merge
Played both a few times as fun last min rounds while on the road to somewhere.

Old Trail isn’t far from 29. Played it in August and loved it; not sure how much time you have but Blue Mountain Brewery is only 10-15 from the course so you could hit that for post round beers and dinner.
South Wales off 211 near Warrenton is supposed to decent. Haven’t played it but it’s on the way School House 9
Or Greene Hills in Stanardsville @JohnP is a member there but it has public access as well. Outside of C’ville
Hey man, my buddy and I are riding down from Richmond for the event. Would be down for a practice round the weeks leading up if you’re in the area.
That sounds good to me. It would be nice to see the course beforehand. My partner Gus is also up your way in Richmond, and he might be down to join as well.
Meadows Farms is interesting on the way down 29, Birdwood in Charlottesville is worth stopping for and not far off the road either.
second Shenvalee - would suit your purposes
Id go the other way on birdwood. I dont like the place all that much, plus the course still needs a year or two to grow in before conditions are worth a damn., plus your going to pay 115 per person for off season rate. If you want to detour 25 minutes, hit up spring creek at zion cross roads. May want to check as they may have just punched the course though
I’ve got a few buddies that are members at Birdwood and they have said that it is nearly impossible to get a tee time right now and pace of play is SLOW. This is obviously third party so take it with a grain of salt, but if you are going that way, Old Trail is a great option.
Heritage Oaks in Harrisonburg is always in great shape for a city-owned muny. It’s a solid layout too. Very fun to play. Early last fall, it was $45 to ride 18 holes.
East to get to from 81 also. of course you’re leaving DC mid-afternoon so you wouldn’t get that far south until later in the afternoon
I admittedly haven’t played Birdwood since 2014(on the way down to Pinehurst for the Open), Blue Ridge Shadows might be an option and is off of 66 before you get to 81.
2nd post here in the VA thread and on the site overall… I’m in Broadlands, VA a few miles west of Dulles Airport. Been following the guys on social media but decided to dip my toe into the community pool.
I am going to be down in Christiansburg, VA this weekend (March 25-28) for a swim meet. I’ll have some time midday each day between our prelims and finals sessions. My question is two-fold. One, is there a good place to hit balls that wouldn’t be exorbitantly expensive around there and are there any good courses that I would be able to get onto that any of you recommend. I look forward to hearing any suggestions.
Good courses… Pete Dye River course at VA tech is gonna be about 20-25 mins away, great track. 10/10 should play if you get time.

Blacksburg CC is stellar too, but unfort I personally cant get you on there.
only real place to hit balls I know of, tho the course above has a great practice facility.
VA tech duck pond 9 hole course on campus would not be a bad time killer either.
I live about 40 mins from there on the south end of Roanoke County, if I can help with anything let me know. Unfortunately due to the fact I have to drive to dc sunday, and am planning to play around there driving home I wont be too available, otherwise I’d host you at my club.
The VT aquatics center in Christiansburg is superb. My daughter is a competitive swimmer. We are there a few times every year it seems.
I agree with everything @country35 said. The best options would be Cox Driving Range and/or The River Course at VT. Blacksburg CC is outstanding but I’m not sure I could get you on. The 9-hole layout on the VT campus is fun as hell to play for what it is. Hardly ever anyone using it either.
Oh, don’t worry I am well versed on the aquatic center. I have to make the trip down about 3 times a year with the kids I have swimming for me. This is the first time the schedule will allow for some in between time. Thanks for the help.
If you are ever interested my club is right off exit 150 on 81, most weekends I can swing anything.
How is Stonehouse GC coming along? Anyone been out there? Should I play it in two weeks?
I’m dying to know, and dying to make it and rnk a weekend trip
I’m playing RNK with my uncle Masters week and hopefully linking up with @slimreaper87 around then as well. Then I’ve got probably 1-2 other rounds to throw in. Thinking Stonehouse/Kiskiak/Gold Course/Bayville (if possible).
Looking at the google earth Viniterra gives me the heebie-jeebies. Is it as narrow as it appears?
