I stayed in them in high school during the Va-Carolinas matches. Wouldn’t recommend them lol
Thanks, this helps considerably. Based on what I’m hearing this is how I should rank the courses (staying w/in ~2 hours of Cobbs Creek). Will be 2nd week of April
Don’t expect a “nice” “resort” course if you trek out to Golden Eagle - it is not that. Some cool/funky holes, some holes I thought were really stupid, and some interesting stuff, but pretty scruffy and the vibe is more blue collar than resort course.
Colonial Heritage could be worth a look. I would echo previous sentiments about Viniterra. Give me a shout if you want to play in Virginia Beach area
Absolutely I do, that is firmly inside the ~2hr radius I am setting for myself to drive. It looks like there are some cool courses but all mostly private. Bayville GC has unheard of google ratings. I’m guessing that place is extremely private. Also Cavalier Golf & Yacht (lol!) club looks like a siiiick design.
I’d toss Spring Creek into the mix if your trip is going to be before the grass starts to turn. It is or used to be all bent so should be in pretty good shape even if the weather hasn’t warmed up any.
When does this usually occur? I will be in VA April 1-14th
Also, fun fact, I was born in Leesburg but have spent 90% of my life in Oregon.
CGYC is my home course - is a 1928 Banks with a bunch of template holes as Banks was a Macraynor disciple. Not the original design, but still cool. Bayville could be arranged…
Oh boy, now I’m really excited. I love that architecture (who doesn’t?) The only real form of template holes I’ve been able to play are those at Old Mac and a few at Bandon Crossings (mostly the half redan that is my favorite hole) Count me in, I’ll make your schedule work.
To clarify this point, they drive actual Lexus cars around the course as beer carts. Wacky.
Yeah, they use those for all the overnight kids camps in the summer. Not quite the same cabin on property experience of Kinloch up the road.
If you are willing to come all the way to Richmond for Independence, there are some folks around here who belong to local private clubs. I’m at the Federal Club, and we have CCV and Hermitage members around the board as well.
Awesome, I can certainly make that drive! That would be a real treat. The wife has given me at least one day to spend the entire thing golfing so that might be a great use of it.
Exactly what he said! I used to belong at Independence at it was a great course, very open, lots of fun and in great shape. I moved to the other side of town and just joined Lakeside Park Club, would be happy to host, it’s a fun, little Donald Ross course!
Not having played many courses on your list i dont have much experience to speak up. But did a quick golf trip a couple months back and Colonial Heritage was the course all my buddies kept talking about after the round. So id have to recommend that. I enjoyed Golden Horseshoe (Gold) but i understand its not everyones cup of tea for the price. And Kiskiack is amazing, usually 40-45 buck. Decent shape as everyone has said. But the layout is fun as hell and the people there are always great. 11 and 18 are two of my favorite tee shots in the whole area.
18th hole @ CGYC is a 200+ yard Redan right on the bay up against the clubhouse. Have a cool Biarritz and a really good Road hole too
RNK is a must. I like Kiskiak more than colonial heritage. I like them both a lot. Viniterra Never did it for me. I’d be curious to see what Stonehouse looks like for 2021 by that time. See if there is another Strantz up and running.
I am a new member at Golden Horseshoe. I like the Gold a lot (starting one is better). I’m up for hosting, but I’m usually slammed on weekends. Also, visiting the area, colonial Williamsburg is a must And I like the battleground at Yorktown/ Yorktown beach for dinner
If they get the greens growing right again and all switched over to Bermuda, that place could be special. Very odd piece of property that Strantz fits nicely in.
It is unique, it’s also had a really tough go. I’m not sure the amount the hoa paid to save it will be enough. Fingers crossed.
Stonehouse is on my list this year. Hopefully a 36 hole day in combo with RNK
I grew up in Williamsburg and was a member at The Shoe for a decade +. Moved to NY about eight years ago and I’d all but give away a body part to play the Gold Course whenever I’d like. I know they can charge some decent coin for guests but it’s an amazing membership deal. Up here, I’m looking at triple what they charge for half the season. It’s easily in my top 5 layouts of all time.
