Roll Call: Virginia

It’s absolutely rolling the dice, I’ve also played the slowest 6 holes of my life there. Worth trying at that price.

I can only imagine. There are only two tee times taken (as of right now) between 12 and 3, that is the only thing that gives me hope lol

Played a nice fall round at Poplar Grove this evening. This place is hard to beat this time of year. Once they finish fixing this place up it should be a real gem. Always a fun golf experience.

You’re right on the money with Poplar Grove. Number 3 is truly a terrible hole right now. Just doesn’t seem likes there’s an easy way to play that hole. Wishing they’d rethink that one. But overall it’s a fun course in the mountains with some stellar views.

In 5 rounds there I think I’ve made par once. Its just a dumbass hole , and its so out of character for the rest of the track.

Thanks to everyone here for their recs - wife and I just got back from Charlottesville and really enjoyed our time there.

Rained on us all day Sunday and was kind of gross Monday… thankfully Tuesday and Wednesday were perfect to make up for that.

Hit Blue Mountain and Veritas on Sunday despite the rain. I’m sure we would’ve found Veritas way cooler without the weather… food at Blue Mountain was very good (wings in particular) for a brewery and wife said the pretzel was great.

Maya for dinner on Monday was excellent as was sandwich from Ivy Provisions for lunch. Was able to get out on Birdwood late Monday afternoon and chased darkness, basically had the place to myself and got through about 14 holes. Obviously things still growing in and place was soggy but thought the layout was good and presented a lot of visual interest, elevation changes and hole variety… not sure what it looked like previously but would definitely play again in a year or two.

The 6-hole par-3 course at Birdwood actually opened Tuesday morning, unbeknownst to us, so the wife joined me and we were literally the 2nd and 3rd people to ever play it. I thought $35 per person was a bit steep for 6 holes but it did include rental clubs for her. The first hole goes over water and rough around the greens and bunkers was VERY thicc which is not ideal for beginners but overall a nice way to spend an hour. Three tees on every hole so you can mix up which yardages/clubs you’re hitting.

Outside of golf, thought Three Notch’d had the best beers of the breweries we visited. Pippin Hill as everyone said was awesome setting. Were supposed to hit The Local for dinner on Tuesday but some stomach issues scrapped those plans so we got Crozet Pizza instead which hit the spot.

New to the area and looking for fellow enthusiasts in Hampton Roads. Playing at an 18 at the moment, aiming to be at 9, hope that tells you about my priorities. Always down for a few col’ ones on the course too. Let me know if you have a crew and are looking for someone to be a regular at your tee times.

Any NOVA golfers members somewhere and interested in doing a little home and away group? I host you, you host me type deal so we all can enjoy our little slices of heaven in the area. I am a member out at Fauquier Springs in Warrenton (old school 1950s designed, 6300 from the tips but all the right protections from length)

Glad i found this thread, look forward to chiming in!

Last time I played Fauquier Springs, Andy was still the pro there. I enjoyed my round, I’d enjoy coming back some time. I’m at Stoneleigh, in Round Hill.

where you been playing so far? I don’t get out to the peninsula much, but am usually down for a game on the southside

Andy was great. He took the job at Winchester CC a few years back. We just went through a complete green restoration and are now working on some of our fairways. New Super was formerly at Creighton and RTJ, so i am excited to see what he brings.

Never played Stoneleigh, but hear great things. hows the course looking?

I’ve played Sewells point and Bide-A-Wee, both highly recommended

Can tell you right now… Sewell’s Point may have the greens in the best shape right now. Played yesterday morning and they were awesome. It looks like it’s a military only course, but it’s open to the public now. And rates are pretty cheap as well.

I see you’ve played there now. I was very surprised

Andy really is a great guy, I met him when he was a young Assistant Pro at Stoneleigh. I’m glad you’ve heard the good things, the course can be a little polarizing. First timers seem to love it or hate it, with not many in the middle. Stoneleigh had a rough summer, with the drought for nearly 2 months (the rain stayed behind the Blue Ridge whenever it got close), then the heavy rains in August/September, but its healing up nicely now. We also just replaced our super, and his first couple of months on the job look pretty good.

That sounds exactly like our issue. Apparently, our old super had only done surface aerating and not deep tining on the greens, so the root structure was so bad the drought just baked our greens. Couple that with some pesky poa that wouldnt go away, and it made for a bad summer. Shut all 18 greens down in July, stripped the surface off, reseeded with bent and then top dressed. Course is finally reopening greens next Saturday

Wow, that’s severe, I’m glad its working out. Our problems were mainly fairways, we had just a few small problem areas on the greens. Now that the weather has cooled down, the bare spots are growing back in. We did aerification in late August, and now the greens are just about perfect, faster than they’ve been al year.

Played last weekend, agreed on the greens. Felt like they were challenging but fair. I’m not great off the tee, so fair greens are a must for me.
