I am so sorry for your loss.
So sorry to hear this Sam
Really sorry to hear that brother. If I can do anything let me know.

Hey folks, I’m visiting my brother (non-golfer) in Norfolk for a few days mid-April and will have my clubs. Would love to play a round. Hoping for good weather while I’m in town! Or at least better than here in Chicago, where it’s been mostly dreary and wet (typical spring weather). This 12 handicap is looking for recommendations - appreciate the help!
I did a little research and it seems like there’s a lot to choose from – good problem to have. I likely will only have the free time to play once, so I don’t mind paying more for a nicer spot, if needed. I’m staying near downtown Norfolk and willing to drive maybe 45 minutes or so.
Thanks y’all.
There are definitely a lot of options. I’d probably recommend Riverfront in Suffolk. It’s only about 20-25 mins from downtown Norfolk depending on traffic.
I’m heading out of town for a golf trip on the 19th, but I’d be down to get a round in if the dates work out.
Thanks man, appreciate the offer. That course looks legit. I’ll be in town starting the 17th but I’m not sure I can play until Saturday the 20th. Gotta nail down the schedule with his fam. Working on it…
“Whatever the hell is west of Roanoke.”
Technically I’m west of Roanoke
I can second Riverfront. One of Doak’s earlier designs. Sewells Point on the base in Norfolk is supposed to be very good. It was military only when I lived there in the mid 90s, so I never got to play it. I have fond memories of Sleepy Hole in Suffolk, but I’d like some confirmation that they’ve kept it in decent shape. I always worried about it.
I really enjoy playing at Sewells Point. It’s one of my go-to spots for late afternoon rounds.
I played a round at Sleepy Hole last May. I don’t have many photos from the course that day, but it was in good shape. It had been several years since I had last played out there.
for the 10th, I’m down to pivot to anywhere else in the area. I really liked Golden Horshoe green but for some reason most dont
Riverfront, Sleepy Hole and Sewell’s Point are all excellent suggestions - can’t go wrong with any of those and they should be pretty easy to get to from downtown Norfolk
I’m down to play wherever. I haven’t played either of the Golden Horseshoe courses.
10-4 I’m meeting with dude who will be there tom at 11 for a fundraiser money collection, will push it further on him.
Gold course- world class experience but I’m going on a day trip end of May so not trying to spend that kind of cash
Green- pretty open, not too long. well conditioned. zero houses on it. Kinda off on its own in BFE. Was really empty last time out too. I dug it a lot.
I’m a fan of open courses with no houses.
I’m also a fan. One of my coworkers was a member when I lived in Williamsburg so I played it often. It was probably the first nice-ish course that I played more than once or twice, so I’m curious how I’ll feel about it if I ever get back there now that I’ve played a bunch of other nice places. But a lot of fond memories and who doesn’t love a solid downhill par 3?
Or 4??
yeah they ABUSED around here with the elevation.
It was in great shape, totally boring and lackluster layout, but all I really recall is the dude beating me to wiping down my club faces and costing me the $10 tip
I was always a little salty that the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation would let us W&M students do any of the touristy stuff for free, but they wouldn’t even give us a couple bucks off on the (now defunct) par 3 course.
That said - I’m a big fan of both Gold and Green.
