I played rose park a couple weeks ago. Has to be worst course in salt lake valley. I played mountain dell lake yesterday. The greens are in amazing condition.
South Mountain- often recommended on this sub, (my personal favorite course in the Salt Lake area) figured I’d throw up a picture, this is from last year, as this year I haven’t gotten a good one.
That’s a good one, that’s the 1st hole right? Or 10th? I vaguely recall that being the opening hole I just don’t remember for which 9 haha.
I’m going to steal your idea and post a couple of pics for Valley View since I was there recently . Great course.
1st hole, probably my favorite opening hole in the state. Par 4. Doglegs to the left beyond the small pond. The longer hitters like to target a large tree just on the other side of the pond and carry it. I remember playing the amateur for the 1st time and watching guys fly it over the tree from the tips. Hope they didn’t trip on my jaw while it was on the ground. Not sure on the yardage required to clear the tree, mostly because I’ve never been long enough to ever have the thought cross my mind.
10th hole, another par 4. Fairway slopes left to right pretty hard. Most low handicaps play an iron off the tee because of a fairway bunker in play on the right (not really shown in the picture) and anything in the right rough is blocked by some trees.
I believe that pic of mine was hole #10, fun downhill par 4. Valley View is a great course, I haven’t been there in a bit, but hole #1 is one of my favorite opening holes around as well. Looks like its in good shape!
Figure I’ll unleash the few pics I have of random courses while I’m at it.
Here’s my pic from my South Mountain experience from a few years ago. Doesn’t really show much of the course ironically.
This is from Old Mill in the Salt Lake valley. Don’t remember which hole but it provides a nice vantage point over the rest of the course.
Looks like the Old Mill pic is from #18, if memory serves, they swapped the front and back last year so the finishing holes would be a bit easier. I’ll have to dig back through my cellphone and throw up a few more pics from this summer…
My favorite hole from Riverbend, #13 (yesterday). Short Par 4 hole, narrow with a creek running across the middle of the fairway, and a front of the green framed up tightly by 2 bunkers. If you’re feeling saucy this is definitely a drivable green, but the safe play is to hit iron over the fairway creek and leave yourself a nice 100 yard approach shot. There are holes out here with better views, but this hole really gets you thinking, esp when the wind is up!
Man, I really need to check this course out. That pic reminds me of Glen Eagle up here and I really like that course as well.
I am headed out to Salt Lake City next weekend and I wanted to check out a few golf courses. So far I have Thanksgiving Point booked and I was planning on booking Mountain Dell - Lake.
This will be my first time playing golf in Utah. I am open to any course under $100. What other courses should I play?
Are there any must-play courses I should go to while I am in town?
Any recommendations are appreciated!
Thanks,
Mac
@huck1far gave a great summary of the decent courses in the area here:
One that’s not listed here but is relatively close is Bountiful Ridge. It’s just down the road from Eaglewood, referenced above. Both are kept in great condition and offer similar views of the valley.
Play well!
I would recommend soldier hollow if you can make it out to Heber/Midway. I prefer the gold course that gets you up into the mountains.
Went out and played Bountiful Ridge yesterday, since @Wildat mentioned it up above and I hadn’t played there yet this season, figured I’d get out there for a few swings. Not as narrow as some of the other “mountain style” offerings around Salt Lake, (I’m lookin at you South Mtn!) greens are some of the quickest I’ve played this summer. Lots of elevation change on this course, make sure you are landing in the right area, or some of those sloping fairways will cost ya! Saw more deer out there than houses, just a really fun place to play and the price is great for the shape the course is in.
Waterfall behind 18’s green:
Hole #10
Cant remember the hole # for this one…
Got out early the other day and had a spin around Glendale, unfortunately they had just punched their greens, so I walked away with a poor score and this picture…
I would second the Heber/Midway recommendation as getting up into the mountains is a highlight of golf here. In addition to Soldier Hollow, Wasatch St Park or the Homestead are good ones in the area. You can get there by continuing up Parley’s canyon past Mtn Dell or up Provo canyon if you’re staying down south by Thankgiving Point.
If you’re staying in SLC, Bountiful Ridge or Valley View in Davis County (North of SLC) are great choices and in great condition. I used to recommend Park City Municipal, but they seem to have raised their rates the last few years.
The good news is you will have a difficult time finding public greens fees above $50 or $60 anywhere in the valley for 18 holes.
Thanks for the information guys! I can’t wait to get out to SLC and check out the golf scene
Enjoyed a nice midweek round at Mtn Dell Canyon course last week. The Canyon course plays a bit more open the first few holes to ease you into the round, but definitely tightens up as you move into the back 9, which is where this course shines IMO. Lots of elevation change as you would expect from a mountain course. Interesting routing in the back 9 as well as you play the par 5’s back to back, and finish off with 4 par 4’s. Honestly I’d like a little more variety from the par 3’s out here, as I played the same club for 3 of the holes, and 1 club shorter for the other one. Of course the views are incredible, and the conditioning is reallllly good for how much wildlife you see tromping around the course. Better sand than most of the beaches I’ve had to hit out of this year. Don’t know if I’ll make it back here before the snow starts flying, as my hit list still has a few to go, but its got a great reputation around here for a reason.
Finally got a round in after a few weeks off. Played the front 9 at Wolf Creek in Eden, UT which is mostly known for other recreational activities (2 ski resorts and a large reservoir for boating/fishing). First time I’ve played here and first impressions left me a little underwhelmed considering the $30 green+ cart fees. The layout was slightly confusing and the lack of cart paths means you have to find your way between some holes. Also makes for some rough riding on the few dirt paths. A “resort” course should be better, IMO.
The opening 9 holes have a lot of elevation changes between tee and green. There’s been a lot of smoke from the CA wildfires and it shows in the pics.
1st hole looking back from green to tee -
2nd hole par 5 playing toward the valley-
2nd green looking South toward Pineview reservoir
2nd green looking North -
3rd tee, looking East. The nearest ski resort, Powder Mountain, is located on the other side of the mountains seen in the background (doesn’t look like much but it is a really great place to ski/snowboard)
4th tee par 3 over pond -
5th tee par 5. The green is guarded on all sides by large bunkers so of course I thought I could reach the green in two (spoilers: I didn’t)
6th tee par 3. Probably my favorite hole of the round. I’m a sucker for downhill par 3’s. The southern view of the valley is likely fantastic in the late spring/early summer months.
7th tee par 4. Not much stood out to me on this hole. Slightly uphill but probably offers the least amount of elevation change of the 9.
8th tee another par 3. Highlight of this hole were the deer. Probably the most laid-back deer I’ve come across. Even my Dad shanking his tee shot over their heads didn’t faze them. One came trotting up next to the flag while I was chipping about 15 ft away.
9th tee par 5. A separate deer gathering greeted us at the tee. 3-putted for bogey so needless to say the deer were the highlight again haha.
The best part of the course were the greens, IMO. Putts rolled pretty smooth and true. However, no one seems to like fixing their ball marks so the putting surfaces were pretty beat up on some holes.
I’d like to try the course again earlier in the year when it’s (hopefully) in better shape. But the cost to play (and the trip out; ~15 min East of Ogden and ~45 - 60 min North of SLC) doesn’t seem worth it this time of year.
How are the conditions in SLC? Heading there this weekend.
Still looking for somewhere to play on Friday, do not have a car though. So would need to be close to the city, Any suggestions?
I think you’re coming at a great time. This week is going to have really mild weather after seemingly endless high 90, 100+ temp days. Depending on where in the city you’re staying I think Bonneville may be your best bet within city limits. It’s just south of the University of Utah campus. It’s not my favorite but a lot of locals like it so I think general opinion holds greater weight.
Cheers!
Within the city limits, Bonneville and Forest Dale are your best choices, If you can take a short drive (20 mins from downtown) Bountiful Ridge is a great track that will give you more of a “mountain golf” feel.
