Roll Call: The Duck Club | Canadians, Beer and Cow Pastures

Absolutely where I land as well. It’s in great shape and it’s a great facility but it’s just kinda boring. Legacy 9 kicks ass but Sunrise and Sunset leave a lot to be desired architecturally.

Legacy Ridge, Blackhorse, Listowel and Pike are my favourite tracks in the area.

Can one of the local Black Horse folks fill me in on why they aren’t registered with the RCGA?

Its definitely the fav of my group, but as most of us track handicaps its almost a wasted round when you have limited days to play.

I also understand the membership is full?

Anyways, as we’re all former member at Whispering Hills, and its now functionally unplayable (it’s too bad because lay out wise, it would be top 5 in area, but thays a story for another day) we’re looking at Northern Dunes next year, as its $700 lol.

Efforting getting them back into Golf Canada. It’s a money thing. Until recently there wasn’t an option to join as just the facility. So it was $2000 for the facility + $50 per member. The value wasn’t there. Now the course can join as just the facility and let the members who want GC memberships join on their own. Allegedly Doug is looking into it. It’s very annoying that it’s not a member but there also weren’t that many members that were playing other events that give a shit. The demo is getting younger so it’s something that is being considered.

Well, that’s great news, thanks for filling me in.

Pretty hard to beat that track for the $$$.

Hello Ducks,

I am signing up for a GTA am tour tournament next week and have 2 options in the Hamilton area. Dundas Valley golf and curling club AND Beverly golf and CC. Anybody played either before? Based on my research they both look nice and similar quality. As I can only play one, which course is worth seeing more?
cheers

I have played both in the past 24 months. Both are really good and quite similar stylistically. I think both Robbie Robinson’s. Beverley prob a little flatter walk, a little more forgiving off the tee. Recent Ian Andrew bunker refurb. Can’t go wrong at either

Selfishly I’d choose Beverly as I haven’t played it. Dundas is quirky and a ton of fun, fairly wild elevation changes throughout. I was at a GTA Am Tour event for that one and had a brutal day which was a bummer - highlight (lowlight?) was a playing partner who was a cheat and regularly miscounted his scores.

But yeah - won’t go wrong either way!

Howdy all,

I’ll be up in Quebec City and Montreal at the end of August. Quebec City 29th, Montreal 30th - Sept 1st. Would love to play with some locals if possible. If not, I have skimmed the thread to get an idea of the good courses to check out. Thanks!

I actually don’t know if we have many up that way just @dylcoch and I think he might be more Northern.

Yeah I am quite a way from both those cities. about 500 km WNW of Québec City and 500 km northwest of Montréal. I should basically be the person on the refuge apologizing about the wildfires around where I live. So I would not be able to join, unfortunately

Just got back from my first visit here - if you need restaurant / bar recs, let me know. Absolutely brilliant city - I am completely enamoured!

Would love some good bar and restaurant spots. My GF and I are both going in blind and kind of just going off reviews.

Just put the below together for one of my colleagues who’s passing through there quickly on her way to PEI. She’s fairly budget-conscious as their main vacation is on the coast, so I might adjust priorities if you want to splurge…

Le Projet - super casual but excellent beer bar, all great Quebec breweries. Really outstanding beer list. Food was simple but decent, I had a very serviceable banh mi.

La Barberie - brewery with a lovely big patio, found this place by accident. Really good beer, and revolving food options on the (massive) patio depending on the day.

Restaurant La Buche - great brunch option several hospitality staff recommended. Bottomless mimosas and Quebecois food. Usually lined up down the block if you don’t book, but we got in pretty quickly (maybe 30 min wait).

Arvi - if you want something spectacular, this is it. Truly exceptional meal, one of the best of our trip. The staff all bounce between cooking and serving from the open kitchen, Scandinavian influenced French food. All sourced locally, wildly fun atmosphere and stunning things to drink paired with the food. Not cheap, but certainly not outrageous for this quality either.

If you just want a fancy drink without going crazy, the bar at the Fairmont is dope. It’s right up on the walls of the old city so the views are amazing, and the drinks were really good. We quickly got carried away, but a lovely spot for a quick cocktail on the way to somewhere less spendy…

Buvette Scott - restaurant across from Le Projet, came highly recommended but we couldn’t get in on the nights we had free (closed Sunday Monday and we had Arvi on Tuesday already). Looks like a really great neighbourhood spot.

The neighbourhood of Saint-Roch and then across the river up towards Arvi both seemed packed with options - either could be good for a wander around until you see something you like.

If you want something truly brilliant, book Arvi. That place was a goddamn treat. Let them recommend wines to go with the food, or go with the pairings. Service was super casual but slick, food was wildly good, properly excellent time here.

I have a bunch more too - Le Clan in the old city looked bonkers good for one, and L’Affaire Est Ketchup is still rolling (Bourdain went here back in the day, looked fun).

I know I have more in a text from a server in Montreal if you need any other options…

That should be more than enough, thanks for taking the time do write that out. We’re only there for ~24 hours including sleep so we’ll be doing well to knock the majority of those out. Arvi reservations are booked, very excited about that.

Fuck yeah! I hope you enjoy it.

I can do the same for Montreal if required, but it seems folks usually have a better idea of where to go there. But just say the word - the Duck Club has a TON of Montreal intel.

Well I’d like to tap in on that Montreal Intel!

Know nothing of the place, going on a bachelor party next weekend to the great city. No golf, but what are some of the key don’t misses or definitely stay away from?

We’re a pretty easy going group like to just take in good food/drinks etc any fun activities. Going to an MLS game Sat I think so that will take a few hours.

So, Schwartz’s for a smoked meat sandwich. Yes, you’ll have to line up. It might be quick. It might not be. Early is always better. But it’s the OG and it’s great. Fatty sandwich, and get a smoked meat poutine too.

Beers - go to Dieu de Ciel, Canada’s OG craft beer bar. Just reopened after a loooong reno. It’s legit.

Also go to Pit Caribou - ever changing list of Quebec beers alongside their in-house brews. I had a civilised afternoon drinking large format saisons and sours, and a rowdy night with a big group working through an IPA takeover. Magical spot. The Portuguese chicken shop next door comes highly recommended, but I couldn’t squeeze it in.

Walk up Mount Royal for the views, then walk down and go to the Latin quarter - Sainte Bock for more beers, and whatever food you fancy.

Good - like, GOOD good restaurants -

Mon Lapin is one of my favourites in all of Canada. Like, the BEST neighbourhood restaurant you can imagine. Wildly good food, brilliant service, crazy interesting wine list. I gave them a budget and got 3 options each time we wanted another bottle - got a story and made a decision, and it was all incredible.

Pichai is fancy Thai food - the cooking is SENSATIONAL. Very chilled atmosphere, again great wine list, this place was a last minute find and blew me away.

Pied De Cochon is an intuition. Very rich, old school Quebec food but still with modern flair. It’s a must visit for me anytime I’m in the city. Eat all the foie gras and the get the duck in a can.

Bar George for cocktails and hearty English pub snack. Gorgeous oak panelled room, great drinks, and just a fun spot.

Cloakroom (around the corner) is one of Canada’s best cocktail bars. Tiny, gotta get there early for a seat (maybe 25 total?) but they are SO good at what they do. Drinks only - no food.

Walk around the old city - the building are cool, lots of little art galleries and shops, but lots of tourist trap-y restaurants. Cafe Olimpico (couple different spots) is a local fave for caffeine and cakes.

It’s such a narrow focus of my favourites, and there’s 100 more great spots (shoutout Joe Beef / Liverpool House / that whole group) but it’s a start. Fire any questions over as needed…

Hey guys, new here coming to ya from Chambly, Qc (south shore of Mtl, originally from Ottawa)! Seriously considering joining the Nest, just wondering if it’s worth it, seeing as there doesn’t seem to be a ton happening in “La Belle Province”. Never been afraid of a little driving for golf however… Thoughts?
