Roll Call: The Duck Club | Canadians, Beer and Cow Pastures

You might be onto something here. I play the course every week and haven’t had one round there this year that counted towards my handicap haha. Because it’s short it can be gettable but you definitely still need to play well.

I noticed I didn’t reply to you directly above and so you missed this, but here is Copetown’s designer’s name.

Good article about him here:

Duck Club, anyone around Monday (7/25) to play Tarandowah? I’ll be driving home from Toronto to west Michigan. Will probably shoot for a tee time between 10am-12pm.

If I didn’t just get absolutely raked over the coals by covid I would say I’m in, not sure my body could take the punishment of it right now.

Totally understandable. I hope you feel better soon dude. And, if you find yourself feeling better in 10 days holler at me

planning a 4 week trailer camping trip next year to NB, PEI and NS ( i think including NF and Lab are too much but we’ll be back). I’ll be coming in from Maine. Does anyone have any must play golf recs as well as must stay/visit places? Golf is secondary to spending nights in campgrounds on shore and taking family on awesome hikes/visits.

Depending where you’re crossing over. The Algonquin in St. Andrews had a recent reno and is likely worth a stop. Not sure what else is in New Brunswick but there are lots of good options in PEI and then definitely some in NS. I did a road trip a couple years back through NB, PEI, NS. Happy to answer any questions or give any recommendations if needed

So The Algonquin isn’t a tourist trap?

I can’t speak for the resort itself, but the golf course is supposed to be quite good. Was recently ranked as the 60th best course in Canada and allegedly has Donald Ross roots but had a lot of recent work done my Rod Whitman (same guy that designed Cabot Links)

Also, again depending where you cross Aroostook Valley might be a cool spot to check out. Clubhouse is on the US side of the border and the course itself is in Canada

If money is not a problem and you want to play the best courses then here is your list.

The Algonquin (NB) - Donald Ross, reno by Rod Whitman (let’s forget about Tom McBroom’s work here). Superb course, you will really enjoy this one. Probably the best in Atlantic Canada not named Cabot or Highland Links IMO

Links at Crowbush Cove (PEI) - Tom McBroom. Great course along the ocean, the ocean holes are a real wow factor. Watch out for the bugs (bring bug spray)!

Dundarave (PEI) - Michael Hrudzan and Dana Fry. Great golf course on a nice little quiet resort. Good place for some quality R&R. Worth a trip if you dont mind being away from most of the action on PEI. A second course at the resort is also worth the play if you are staying on premise, otherwise pass on it.

Green Gables (PEI) - Stanley Thompson. A classic Stanely Thompson, fairly well taken care of. Nothing too outstanding about the place, but I have a soft spot for Stanley’s designs so it is worth the play.

Fox Harbr (NS) - Graham Cooke. Have not played this course yet. Legend has it Tiger holds the course record, showed up to the grand opening one day on an invite from the owner and shot a 62. Apparently a beautiful oceanside course.

Links at Brunello (NS) - Tom McBroom. Have not played here either. But the course does look fantastic.

Cabot Links (NS) - Rod Whitman. The first course at Cabot and the better golf course of the two. Cabot Links is a fantastic golf course that brings traditional links golf to Canada. If I had 10 rounds of golf on Cape Breton I would play Links 6 times, 2 at Cliffs and 2 at Highland Links.

Cabot Cliffs (NS) - Coore & Crenshaw. Dont think I need to say much about Cabot Cliffs. The pictures speak for themselves. The most beautiful golf course I have ever had the pleasure of playing. Worth the price of admission.

Highland Links (NS) - Stanley Thompson. Rough around the edges but this former World Top 100 course is sure to dazzle. The course is some of the most rugged land a golf course can sit on, using all natural slopes everywhere. Some of the best Par 5’s in the country IMO (Holes 6, 7 and 15). The drive around the Cape from Cabot to Highland Links is some of the most beautiful scenery you may ever experience.

Happy to answer any other questions anytime!

I’ve got a 1030 tee time on Monday (7/25) at Tarandowah. If anyone wants to join, I’d love some company out there

saving all of this for the planning…won’t be able to do them all but this helps me a ton

Hey Duck Club!

Dropping back into the Refuge after a break. Work and family life been hectic.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Mad River is scary good.

Coppinwood’s practice holes could be three of the best in the province.

Tarandowah is a grasshopper farm.

I would add to @alhunter’s list that both Green Gables and Highlands Links are in national parks, so should be convenient for any camping / hiking you’re looking to do. Another option for that is Fundy, which is in Fundy National Park and was also designed by Stanley Thompson.

Fox Harb’r would be a skip IMO. I also don’t find Brunello to be anything special, although it’s been a few years since I’ve played there. The rest are all great. Always thought Dundarave was super underrated though it seems to be getting a lot more recognition now and it just hosted a Canadian Tour event a few weeks ago.
