Roll Call: The Duck Club | Canadians, Beer and Cow Pastures

Hey all!

Long time NLU fan here in KW, but relatively new to the refuge and now the Nest! It was great to meet many of the Ontario crew at the Tussle recently. I’ve perused this thread and lots of great banter and thoughts about courses in the region and across the country. Consider this post my official application for membership to the Duck Club.

Also hope eveyone enjoyed that marathon playoff today. I guess Harris English is back to flushing it.

If anyone is looking to golf this week Iet me know, I’ve got two spots open on Thursday at Doon Valley at 3:20, and two spots Friday at Tarandowah at 10:40. Let’s celebrate Canada Day the right way!

Alas, after OD’ing on golf recently, Wednesday thru Sunday is entirely family time. But I’ll be back the following week! We’ll get something going, Cap.

Enjoy the family time! I’m going to try and OD myself on golf this week. And yeah for sure we’ll get out there again soon I’m sure!

Hey Ontario folks, looking to plan something for the weekend of July 17/18 and hopefully get a few groups together. Fill out your info on the Sheet and let me know what days you’re available/interested in playing and I’ll reach out to the course and get us booked in.

We had a couple of groups out to TPC Toronto a few times last year, we can go back there or try something new. I’m open to suggestions

Remains of 182 people found in unmarked graves near former residential school outside Cranbrook, B.C. | CTV News

The tragedy of Residential School legacy continues to unfold in front of our eyes - this time at St. Eugene’s Mission in Cranbrook - which is now a golf resort and casino.

I encourage everyone in this thread to head to their local bookstore or library and pick up The Reason We Walk by Wab Kinew.

I work very closely with the Annishnabaek Nation in my job and am trying to learn, be an ally, and an advocate for truth and reconciliation. This book was very helpful to me.

This is a post I really don’t like making but feel compelled to do.

Sawmill Creek Golf Resort and Spa in Camlachie, Ontaro was an absolutely amazing links course close to the shores of Lake Huron.

It was fairly short, but had everything you were looking for in a links course. Firm, fast, fescue, mounding, and most of all it was FUN. Sure you got punched in the teeth over and over, but it was a great place to play and for years I almost exclusively played my golf there when I was back close to home.

Unfortunately, a few years ago, ownership started caring less and less about the golf product and wanted to expand their development of the site and turn it into more housing.

There were a lot of twists and turns, but the course is still functioning, albeit on a true bare bones scale, with an owner who could not be less interested in what is going on golf wise. However, they have a contract with a golf management company to operate it at as a course for the next five years, so it will stay open.

That brings me to what is pissing me off today.

The course had the audacity to post this on Facebook, essentially looking to hire an entire grounds crew for FREE.

Fuck I am so mad about this. I know I shouldn’t be, but I used to work grounds crew and know how hard that job is. Not only that, but I also know how shady this new ownership is and how bad of a look this is for a golf course that was beloved.

End rant.

Lunch and drinks for 6 hours of labour. Fuck those people.

I’m all for golf courses surviving but if free labour is part of your business model you probably should find another line of work.

Original posting had it Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. This is an improvement…

Seriously, fuck the owner of this course.

Possibly left some snark on their post.

Contact the Ministry of Labour.

Um, what? Why? What rights are being violated?

Yeah that seems a little extreme. Super scummy on the course’s part, but I don’t think it’s a direct violation of any ministry regulations.

In Ontario, if people work, you have to pay them, unless you fit into one of the narrow exceptions in the Employment Standards Act.

They aren’t working, they’re volunteering

Oldest scam in the book.

Totally circular argument but no matter. The owners of the course are slimeballs. I will now make 400 tee time reservations under various names.

Good luck making those tee times.

Easy
So is booking tournaments

But anyway, in this province, you cant disguise actual work as volunteering and cover it up by giving food and drink and golf.

The angle they’re pushing doesn’t work here. If it was a community clean up or helping with a charity event, sure. But “we don’t want to pay people, come get your volunteer hours” doesn’t meet the criteria.
