Roll Call: Tampa Golfers

TPC Tampa Bay is not worth it, ever.

Does anyone have recommendations on a good coach in Tampa/St Pete? I live in downtown St Pete but willing to drive for someone good.

I personally love Greg McClimans at Clearwater Country Club, have also heard great things about Matt Mitchel at Tampa Bay Downs

Matt Mitchell is spending more time at The Vinoy now which is perfect for you in St. Pete. He’s definitely one of the best in the area and a great guy.

Thanks for the recommendations, going to reach out to Matt

HI Kelly,

I’m new to the St. Pete (Seminole) area and have a membership at Seminole Lake. Would definitely be down for playing sometime. DM me if you want to try and set something up. Eric

Hey all, I am headed down to the area in a couple weeks and looking for suggestions. We are staying in Indian Rocks Beach and currently have my eye set on Dunedin Golf Club both price wise and quality. Any other options in that ballpark?

Subscribe. Hopefully heading to IRB in mid-March. I played some scrappy courses a few years back, definitely looking for some better options this year. Played at East Bay GC, got matched up with 3 local retirees. Don’t remember a ton about the course, but we had a great time.

A friend was down there not long ago, played Seminole Lake CC? Any good?

My grandparents were members at Dunedin when I was growing up. I loved coming down in the winter/spring getting to play. The layout of that place is awesome. Have read some things that it could use some restoration - overgrown trees, patchy fairway areas.

I haven’t played it in 5 years or so, but if it’s cheap and you can get on, I would. I’m traveling down in mid-february and will try and get over to play it.

All my buddies and myself think Dunedin is the best public track in the area both layout and price wise. Back nine could definitely use some work. East Bay is fun but dont expect anything great or fast greens. The Landings is a Muni, but has some of the best greens in the area. Mangrove Bay is a nice course in St. Pete.

I would exhaust all options before booking a time at these courses - Lansbrook, Wentworth, Tarpon Woods, Cove Cay, Largo.

Seminole Lake CC is my (new) home course after moving down here in October. They do a good job maintaining it and I think it’s fun to play. I’d be happy to set up a round if you make it down.

Pelican now has a True Spec Golf location. Doing a full bag fitting Saturday morning. Anybody else been to this True Spec location yet? I’ll report back on my experience.

Appreciate the offer! Hoping we don’t have to cancel two spring breaks in a row.

I recall one of the guys I played with there complaining about dirt patches in the fairways. I hadn’t golfed that much then, so I didn’t really have much to compare to. The company made the day.

Thanks for the recommendations (and what to avoid)!

Have you played Mangrove recently? I played it in June and it was in awful shape. Conditioning that much better in winter/early spring?

Coming down in 5 weeks and would be willing to give it another shot if so.

I could go for fun after not having swung a club in a few months haha. Don’t really want to play a ball buster as my first round of 2021.

Just had a chance encounter with @FL_Buckeye when he walked into my office wearing an NLU pullover. I promptly gave him a check for $700k. It pays to wear NLU swag!

Is the Air Force base course worth trying to get on? I called and they said they do allow public play but need your name and phone number well in advance to get gate clearance. Didn’t know if it would be worth the effort or not, would make for a pretty neat 36 hole day.

Have not played Mangrove in a while so unsure of the conditions. It is a city course so I’m sure there’s not a lot of money going the courses way.

The south Course on the base isn’t bad. I like the layout, conditions aren’t always the best. But I’ve only played it a few times.
