Roll Call: South Carolina Golfers

Thanks! I’ll set up an account in advance. Just now the schedule has me playing Monday April 28. Might drive up the night before. Delighted to play with anyone who is around.

It is. He won that event, WEARING that.

Hey everyone, I’ll be in Aiken for the ANWA & am looking to play the Charleston Muni the Friday before (April 4th).

If anyone wants to join or has any tips for booking let me know! Is booking at midnight 7 days in advance the best option?

Welcome. A few of us will likely be at the ANWA too. Booking opens at 7AM a week ahead. Create an account and be fully logged in before trying to book. Do a test day ahead of time to be sure and you can cancel with no penalty. Holla

Hey man! Have you gotten into our Slack? More info about events and other stuff gets shared there more efficiently than here.

Just downloaded Slack, can someone toss me the invite link?

Much appreciated!! I’ll give that a go for sure.

Hello Gamecocks and Tigers and things of that nature! Found out this morning that the fam is headed to Fripp Island in June for vacation. So naturally golf options are already dancing in my head. A cursory search looks like nothing that really stands out as a must play. Anyone ever play around there and have suggestions? And it goes without saying I’ll be trolling for Refuge playing partners closer to go time. Cheers!

Went with the wrong mascot first buddy, you’ll get no help :joy:

Honestly, though, haven’t played a ton down there. @jtshelley42 might have some insight. If you have any private connections, Chechessee Creek is 55 minutes away.

If all else fails, Hilton Head is 1.5 hours away.

Ocean Point and Ocean Creek on Fripp are solid and super convenient. Not going to win any architecture awards but views are great and conditioning is good. If you’re staying at a house there should be able to call and make a tee time. Pace was also elite when I was out there last year

This is super helpful, thanks! Sounds perfect. Since it’s not a golf-centric trip I’ll just be looking to play somewhere reasonably fun with cool views. If I tell my wife I’m going an hour out of the way for something architecturally interesting she may drown me in the ocean.

I agree with @MarkCaldwell the Fripp courses are 100% your best option. I haven’t played either course yet but have heard good things from multiple people in the area about both.

The public golf scene north of the Broad River bridge (aka Beaufort area) is not good. As @tigergolftraveler mentioned above there are some very good private options within a hour from Fripp (Chechessee, Callawassie, Secession…) if you have a connection.

Let me know as we get closer what day(s) you are looking to play. Would be happy to join if available!

I was in the same boat on a trip with my fiancés family. They seem to know that’s a market out there and actually offer super early morning rounds at a slight discount too. Was back at the house before everybody was done with breakfast.

This is a fair assessment. The State MidAm was at Fripp last year and frankly, I thought the design of both courses stunk, but the conditioning is decent and there are some good views.

If you’re there with the family, I certainly wouldn’t drive way out of the way to play somewhere else unless you’ve got an invite to top tier spot.

Let’s say hypothetically someone booked a time at Tobacco Road for tomorrow because they were foolish enough to assume the weather would hold. And it got canceled. But they’re flying in, and need a spot to play. How far south would they have to drive to find something open and reasonably decent? May have a spot in Aiken, but open to suggestions…

Bad luck! I’m in Columbia, and was supposed to play today, but the course is not opening. Assuming most public options are the same until @ noon tomorrow. Looking at weather in Aiken tomorrow, looks drier than Cola., yet colder.

Is this why I haven’t been able to get in touch with anyone at Oak Hills via email and phone all week?

That, or they have seen your Refuge posts…
