Roll Call: South Carolina Golfers

Uh … yeah. That’s a LOT.

I went to school in Columbia.

My suggestion is to go to Charleston.

Also went to school in Columbia, great college town but a week with a family seems like a stretch. Riverwalk, zoo and museum would only take a day or two. Maybe Greenville for better hiking or Charleston for more all around

I live in Columbia. You can certainly try and stretch it out and have Columbia as your home base with day trips to Greenville and Charleston, but I dont think I’d recommend doing a full week here.

I would go to Charleston first then CAE then GVL.

3 days in Charleston
2 in Columbia
3 in GVL

What does it say about a city when its residents (myself included) tell you to go somewhere else?

I’d follow @LukeBoatright recommendation. It’s ok for a couple days. The zoo is a blast, and the children’s museum/state museum are pretty cool. Congaree National Park (giant swamp) is pretty cool, but I’m not sure how vibrant it is in the winter.

You could come up with a couple nice days in Columbia, but I’d sprinkle in Charleston or Beaufort, Greeneville or Charlotte. Could even make a fun winter day stop on your way down in gatlinburg or Asheville.

Do not do this. You can get the same vibe but be by the ocean in Myrtle Beach at least.

If you spend 8 days in Columbia, you would have doubled the amount I’ve been there in the last 15 years…and im from there. Golf is nonexistent from a public standpoint.

Second on the zoo though, state museum used to be legit as well. You also got the state parks, some military museums, all the capital stuff, Riverfront and Finlay park and I guess Lake Murray dam might be worth a stop for the kids (I grew up beside it, i honestly have no clue what outsiders think).

I drove home from Pinehurst a few summers ago 16 hours, with two drivers. It’s probably the max, although the kids are older now so that part would be easier.

We did Myrtle Beach last summer, not sure the kids would want to go back if they can’t swim. We stopped for two nights in Gatlinburg on the way home but winter activities seem limited.

I was being saracastic/facetious. Gatlinburg is just a giant Wal-Mart

15 hours is insane in one day! I’ve made the drive from Charleston-Chicago to see family a few times. Last time we stopped in Louisville on the way there, and Asheville on the way home. I like both cities, but Asheville is awesome. I’m biased living in CHS, but I’d probably just stop in Columbia for a night. Our girls are younger, but we went to the Columbia zoo recently, and they absolutely loved it. We easily could have spent a full day there including the gardens. I’d probably go to Charleston for the bulk of the trip, and maybe mix day trips to Beaufort, Myrtle(kids love it), Hilton Head, etc. You could stop in Greenville too

Thanks, this is all really helpful. I may have to look at breaking the trip into multiple parts, I don’t love staying 3 or more places in 8 nights and all the driving in between. It looks like the kids may have a better time if we do it that way.
Or I may need to reexamine some Florida options/flights.

I would recommend Greenville, SC as a home base for a 7-8 day trip. It’s closer, there’s more to do overall in upstate South Carolina, plus you’re close to mountains of North Carolina for an easy day trip. Furman and Clemson have great golf courses.

as a Knoxville native, don’t go/stay in Gatlinburg. Just go straight to the park (which is awesome), but Gatlinburg is a tourist death trap

Apple Barn? Go karts? Cmon man

Apple Barn is the GOAT

Wild Dunes Harbor Course closing March-October 2024 for $8 million tee-to-green renovation. No changes to layout but will se changes to bunkers, putting surfaces and cart paths and a new irrigation system. Additionally the 18th hole on the Links course will be “reconstructed” to help deal with erosion.

Fact. What they probably don’t say is the dues are going up 15% across the board starting in March as well. I may be a free agent in the near future. But I do want to see the plan for 18.

Forgive me for being direct but y’all were so kind when I was initially talking about my SC trip a few months ago, so I gotta ask: Anyone a member at Old Barnwell and want to host me on Tuesday 11/14, or me and my farther on Wednesday 11/15?

Also, gonna be looking to play Charleston Muni on 11/13 and Aiken GC on 11/14 (if not at OB on 11/14  ) if anyone is looking to get out mid-week. (Looking like I will be at Cobblestone Park on 11/15, Greenville CC on 11/16 and Omni Park Grove in Asheville 11/17, but I think I probably can’t add on to those times.)

Either way, thanks for the recs previously. And FYI that if anyone ever comes up to DC, would be happy to host at Mount Vernon CC in Northern Virginia.
