Roll Call: Pittsburgh and Western PA

The “big four” private clubs in Pittsburgh are Oakmont, Fox Chapel, Field Club and Longue Vue. I have the most experience with Oakmont, but you really can’t go wrong with any of the other 3. At Fox Chapel you get Raynor template holes, Longue Vue has great views of the river and takes full advantage of being on a hillside with no flat lies, and the Field Club is super fun and scorable.

Just a heads up, i’m a member at Avalon & played New Castle this past fall and the greens were not in good shape at all. I’m sure Avalon will figure it out over the winter/spring though, the rest of the course is fantastic and i agree with your recommendation

Do you really get access to the tee sheet if you stay at the marriott? i have tons of family in latrobe but none of them golf so i was never able to get any contacts to get on there. Would definitely pay for a night at the Marriott there to play.

You do! Or at least did up to two years ago. I’ve been organizing trips renting one of the houses my last 3 times there. But the Marriott Latrobe is/was Palmer family owned, and they have a Masters trophy in the lobby and a lot of other cool artifacts. They get a few tee times a day. I’d recommend calling the hotel and ask if that is still true. They’ll (or you) will have to check with the club to make sure there isn’t a conflict with a club event our tournament.

And you get a member/folio number and can charge everything (golf, lunch, merch) back to the room.

I’m not a huge Latrobe fan. I think without the Arnie tie-in… people wouldn’t really think twice about it.

Isn’t the Arnie tie-in why you would go though?

If that’s your reason for going, have at it.

I’m just saying the course itself… meh.

Public golf isn’t amazing in the area. Best spots IMO are Totteridge and Chestnut Ridge (Tom’s Run). Cranberry Highlands and Birdsfoot are decent. Haven’t played Olde Stonewall but per report nice. Nemacolin is quality but at a price.

I’m at Pittsburgh Field Club now- good course though not as historic as others nearby, very good conditioning, some fun holes and not as many straight up and down holes as some places in Pittsburgh

Bury me at birdsfoot. Love that place.

Totteridge was solid. Lot of people love quicksilver, I wasn’t super impressed, especially for what they charge.

How DARE you disrespect Denny Shute’s 1937 PGA Championship victory over Jug McSpaden in extra holes! It was the last back-to-back PGA until Tiger in 2000.

Although Oakmont, FCGC, PFC, and Longue Vue are tied via the Diebold Cup, I would say Allegheny CC is above Longue Vue in terms of course quality (and arguably the most selective and prestigious club in the area). But Allegheny is in Sewickley, which is close to an hour from the other 4.

I don’t think there’s much between Fox Chapel, PFC, and Allegheny (I’d rank in that order) unless you’re a big Raynor stan. I think Longue Vue is in a tier clearly below those 3. In fairness, there’s some good architecture especially given the poor terrain the property is on. And the views down the Allegheny River would be pretty cool and novel for an out of town visitor.

Birdsfoot is just always sooooo busy, though love the rates. I’ve played some super slow rounds there. Couple really weird holes too- mainly dictated by topography.

Quicksilver is sooooo boring. Agree not worth what they charge. Every hole is down the valley, up to the green- Hit driver, wedge uphill- rinse and repeat.

Haha fair. Was mainly referring to the fact that so many architects have done stuff to it that no one knows which hole anyone did.

Haven’t played Allegheny- heard good things.

@jasona93 (and his buddy) and I are playing at Birdsfoot Golf Club Sunday, 12:30pm tee time, and have room for one more. It’s near Kittanning, north of the city.

Anyone down to join?

Like staying at my mothers house. Who has no status at the CC, but I do drive past it a lot and try not to wreck my car on Hulton road while I stare at the course instead of watching the road.
