I think they’re hoping for yellow phase sooner than May 15. The lousy weather isn’t pushing things, at least, but man… even May 15 hurts. Leagues, dues, memberships… Kind of ridiculous, IMO, that if you’re going to go regionally, you can’t open up golf in NW PA May 1. Or, you know, three weeks ago.
Agreed that it could, and should, have happened already. Wolf has been on the side of caution for literally everything so far, so I’m not getting my hopes up, but sometime in the first week of May would be huge for courses.
I talked to my local state rep about this yesterday (yes, I know, I miss golf). And he said he doesn’t understand Wolf’s policies on this, but he said don’t expect anything before May 8th.
Courses can open on Friday! I have not seen any further details (walking only, no rakes, etc.), but hoping to get out this weekend
Same here, I’ve been impatiently waiting!
I have a week off of work starting May 3rd and looking to play a bunch. I’m in the Cranberry Area if anyone wants to get a foursome together.
So was all of PA allowed to open golf? Not determined by region or county?
All of PA.
Hmmm. Feels like something they should have (?) or at least could have done regionally. I hope courses around Philly are careful.
Thanks. I’ve been gone for a week.
I get off work at 2:15 every day, I’m definitely down to play and live in Zelienople.
I got out to Birdsfoot yesterday afternoon. We had a great time. I always seem to play well there which I am sure helps my affinity for the place. It was a little soupy in spots from all of the rain, but damn did it feel good to be out there! Hope some others in the area were able to enjoy the weather this weekend.
Anybody have recommendations for near seven springs resort or Somerset?
I’ve heard that Hidden Valley’s golf course is pretty good, but I’ve never played it myself. I have played 7 Springs. It’s decent. Always in good shape. Plays longer than the scorecard indicates as all of the short holes play downhill, but somehow all of the 400+ yard par 4’s are straight up hill. My friends that have played both prefer Hidden Valley. Donegal Highlands is the course you can see from the Donegal interchange on the turnpike. It’s fun and was in pretty good shape the last time I saw it. The two 9’s are completely different. The front is pretty much wide open while the back routes through trees.
+1 on Hidden Valley and Donegal…HV is much more challenging than 7 Springs…If you’re willing to drive a bit (45-50 mins), Nemacolin has two good tracks in Mystic Rock and the newly re-designed Shepherd’s rock.
Glengarry Golf Links near Latrobe is also a fun links style design that is worth checking out and is also 45-50 min from Somerset.
Played 9 at Hickory Heights yesterday. Course in decent condition, took around 2 hours to play 9. Although, there were 2 5somes a few groups ahead…
Hickory Heights pisses me off every time that I play there… it is just very unforgiving in a few spots. Those back to back par 3’s on the front 9 are my least favorite holes on the course. I like the back 9 much better than the front.
I played Butler’s Lakeside on Sunday. I thought the course was in great shape. Can’t beat the $32 twilight rate there on the weekends IMO. There are some fun holes on that back 9. I am a sucker for elevated tee shots though.
From what I’ve seen (three years of junior tournaments - and my daughter is pretty good, so I’m not talking about kids spraying it everywhere), I strongly dislike HH.
I also played Lakeside Sunday 5/10 Had a 2:08 tee time. Played it again last Saturday 5/16 and was in even better shape. That’s one of my favorite courses around
Those back to back par 3’s also cause the biggest hot mess of a logjam I’ve ever seen on a course in my life. I want to like that place, and I like those holes on their own, particularly the first one for the narrow green, but without fail, that location is where pace of play goes to die.
