Rates might be borderline obnoxious for most of these course, but you’ve got the cream of the crop!

Crazy…member member this weekend at the club (not playing, to be clear)…might be able to get out Sunday afternoon, but might have to just practice / play pitch n putt course tomorrow and Saturday

In related news…

Would like to get the ball rolling on the 2021 Match Play…thinking that with holidays rapidly approaching and people maybe not working (see: on Refuge) as much…we can leave this up and fill it as we go

As you will see, when you click the sign-up sheet, I left space for 32 entrants…so let’s fill the field

As for the business side of things, I am still honestly not sure if there has been an answer about roll call threads being public or behind the Refuge “paywall” after 1/1/21…so just going to have to keep an eye on that, and worst case consider a transition to a text / whatsapp thread or something along those lines

In the mean time, sign up to play the 2021 tournament!

A few things:

  1. Planning on a $10 entry (maybe in hopes that we can go to $5/year or bracket after that) ($ will go toward a traveling trophy and maybe something specific to this year whether it be a hat or a headcover or something)
  2. I will once again try to regionalize the early bracket, in hopes of minimizing travel and also giving you a chance to meet (hopefully more) and play with guys local to you
  3. Handicaps really don’t matter on the sheet, they will be played off the “current” handicap at the time of the match…if you don’t have an official one, estimate fairly
  4. Invite golf buddies, friends, family…as long as they’re willing to show up and play golf with strangers…and maybe communicate via message board / text / email / handwritten letters

Happy holidays everybody!

Friendly Minnesotan coming in peace. My family impulsively decided to purchase a home in San Tan Valley this last year & in an attempt to escape the cold, I plan to head down there to live & work for a month end of December. It is in the Encanterra neighborhood.

I know I am coming in peak season, but was curious if people have suggestions on public tracks around the San Tan Valley area worth checking out. I am fine paying $100 for a great course, but do not oppose checking out some rougher shape munis. Thanks for any suggestions!

It’s the Acid Erika Cup. We’ve established this.

I’ve moved, by the way.

Welcome to the warmth (eventually)

The first guys I tag in are the guys who have seemingly played everywhere - @matthew823 and @69kv

From there, the guy I know that lives out that way (New Mexico) - @milstein

Hopefully not to the Tempe / Central PHX region…don’t forget that @westviewgolfer and @astrodupes drew each other in the first round and are easily the two best players in the bracket

Hm, problematic.

Honestly, the way I was striking irons on Friday I couldn’t beat a paper bag. Well, unless the bag started triple, triple, double, triple, triple, like my buddy did … I was 5 up at one point and it still took me until 16 to close it out.

Welcome to New Mexico as @pushdraw so lovingly jokes. Not a ton of “can’t miss” tracks, but here are my suggestions:

  • Toka Sticks (Power & Williams Field) is my go to. Parkland style designed by the Army in the 50s, there are some cool stories there. Not sure if Jamie is still the super, but he was doing a ton to really make the course play well.
  • Las Colinas (Rittenhouse & Ocotillo) is fairly short and the typical housing track layout, but some fun to be had with a few interesting greens.
  • Bear Creek Cub course (Riggs & Arizona Ave.) I’ll get roasted for this, but I like the executive course out there. Good for practicing all your irons and it is a quick loop.

If you want to see a good course, you’ll want to plan the 30-60 min drive to Southern Dunes or Whirlwind. Those are by far the most interesting courses for the east valley.

Tough to think about East Valley golf when you’re half way to Nevada

If they are in Encanterra are they going to join the Encanterra CC in the community? (I’m assuming Trilogy?)

I just played there on Friday. Fantastic shape.

Oh, and the amount of North Dakotans/Minnesotans there is absurd.

I’ve played a pretty significant percentage of the public courses around the Phoenix area but what I haven’t seen, the East Valley is definitely my blind spot. I’ve never lived out there and so the courses that look mediocre I’ve just never felt the need to drive a long way to play.

Never played any of the three on your list, for example. All three of them seem like fine places that I would play if they were 20 minutes from me, but a few years ago I was on a “completist” kick and after driving however far to play Johnson Ranch and it just kind of sucking my soul out I was done with that.

As for @OscarDeLaGorga, I’d second the Southern Dunes rec. It’s still a ways out there in Maricopa, but it’s worth the drive. I’m also a big, big fan of Longbow.

Agreed. Toka is my go to, and it is 5 minutes away. But they’ve also treated me well over the years.

I played Longbow once for a city of Mesa scramble. Kicked my ass, so I haven’t gone back

I think that is the plan in due time - but right now its only getting used for visits & no extended, full time living. My parents said in the year of owning it, it is amazing the number of MN people they have met. I will most likely try & get out on Trilogy one time with a friend of theirs who is a full time resident & member.
