Playing 36 same day? If you have a little time. I’ve always like camelback ambiente. And it’s not far away from Talking Stick. But I’d play both TS courses. Just for variety
Playing 18 two different days
As @Southpaw mentioned, this is definitely intentional. The course was designed (claims of Fred Coupels aside) by Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley. Right around the same time (2000-2002) they also designed two courses (with* Nick Faldo) one in Phoenix and one in Palm Springs that also both have strong sand belt vibes.
I know Schmidt-Curley ultimately ended up doing aa sizable amount of work in Asia so maybe this was the start of that and they went over for some meetings and saw the sandbelt courses, or maybe it was just a vacation to Australia they took in the late 90s that inspired their work, but for a few years there they were all about that style.
Is the Phoenix Faldo course you mention Wildfire?
Yes. Wildfire Faldo in Phoenix, Shadow Ridge in the Palm Springs area, and Souther Dunes in Maricopa. All have that strong Aussie sandbelt flavor to the bunkering. All built 2000-2002. I wonder if there are others they did in the time frame.

I am putting together a bachelor trip for Q1 of next year. Does anyone have any strongs takes on the best place to play 36 in one day? We’ll be there from Thursday night to Sunday Afternoon. Thinking we’d do Grass Clippings on Friday night and then play 36 on Saturday. I know Grayhawk is creme de la creme and while it works if there are some more budget conscious options that would be great too. We’re staying right next to the zoo if that makes any difference. Thanks in advance.
I would prefer Troon North over Grayhawk, that’s a personal preference.
But I would also pick both tracks at We Ko Pa over both of those options.
Talking Stick has 36 as well, and it should be a lower price point than all options above. I’ve heard good things about Dinosaur Mountain, but I have never played it.
All of these are east or north of where you are staying, so transport is easy. Quintero is a haul, Verrado is a haul, so keep that in mind.
WeKoPa is far and away the best option for 36. Saguaro is the best public course in the state bar none and Cholla is also very good. Better yet, in those courses you get two different styles of desert golf. WeKoPa also I think meets the needs of a bachelor trip. It’s not immediately in Scottsdale, but the drive isn’t far, and you’re still right next to a casino, they have a good clubhouse with food, showers, etc.
From a golf perspective, Talking Stick is the next best option for 36. Two C&C courses, but in very different styles. Is it the best option for a bachelor trip of guys who might be seeing the courses for the first and only time? Eh, maybe not. Kinda depends on where the guys fall on the spectrum of golf course interest. Oodham is a really interesting course but it isn’t much to look at and many people don’t think a lot of it until they have played it a few times. Saguaro is much more engaging the first time around just because the land and the views are better. On the plus side, TS is right in town and also right next to a casino and Top Golf.
I suppose Grayhawk would be your next best option. The courses are always kept in excellent condition and Raptor is a solid Fazio experience. Talon has nice moments but has never been a course that wowed me. For many summers after I first moved up here I would buy this deal that worked out to where I was essentially pre-buying rounds for $25 at Grayhawk (height of summer 20 years ago and all that) but the idea of paying $300 for Talon makes me physically ill now.
On the other hand the Troon North courses are probably even more expensive than Grayhawk. I like those course more than Grayhawk, but they don’t distinguish themselves from each other at all really. 36 holes in one day I feel like would start to feel brutal unless you all are really accurate or bring a lot of ammo.
Plenty of these places are close enough that you could probably do separate spots, like Grayhawk Raptor and Troon North. But days can be short in Q1 so sticking to a single location might be best.
Papago is right there and it’s great for a muni. It won’t be budget by any means but will be much cheaper than the more boutique spots like TN or Grayhawk
Also, Grass Clippings is fine but mega overpriced for what it is. Unless you’re looking to play under the lights on Friday night, I’d recommend going to Mountain Shadows and getting in as many holes as you can there.
Have 1 spot at Dobson on Sunday (12/15) at 8:54am if anyone is interested. Come join @chearnen13 @Chewy and me!
I’m in
Yea the plan was to play 9 under the lights then hit the town once everyone got in. More of the novelty of playing golf under skylights than anything.
Booked a foursome on Saturday at GCU at 11:04. Let me know if anyone is interested.
Playing my Dec round with @JosieWon at Dobson today
