Unfortunately my Saturday is spoken for the ASU game, and I’m hesitant to commit to Sunday depending on how much I celebrate Saturday night . My December should be wide open and would definitely be down to play some rounds
Anyone want to tee it up Sunday?
Hey, would love to join depending on the date/times you guys are going to play!
I live in Gilbert, and would recommend the checking for a place in Chandler or Tempe. Downtown Mesa has some great stuff but the surrounding areas can get a bit sketchy/run down. Tempe is going to be much busier with the ASU crowd, but Mill Ave and the surrounding area has some great entertainment and food spots. Would personally advise a place closer to Downtown Chandler, would put you in a good spot for driving to Southern Dunes and Dobson Ranch and Chandler has a great area of coffee, breweries, bars and restaurants.
This is great info! Thanks!
I would concur with what is said here. If you are looking at staying in the SE Valley, the downtown Chandler area will be ideal. Close as you can get to Southern Dunes, accessible to Dobson Ranch and other courses in the Valley.
Plus the downtown area has lots of good restaurants to hangout post round.
Some potential spots I would recommend.
The Brickyard, Acqua di’ Mare, Maple House, the Sleepy Whale, and Shimogamo.
Reach out if you have any questions.
I’m dumb and won an auction for Arrowhead CC, didn’t pay much, but probably too much for an AP course but long story short I’ll be looking to fill out a foursome sometime. I’ll let everyone know when I get it planned and get back in town.
Anyone want to join @saintjunior09 and myself at Western Skies for a 12:20pm tee time next Friday (12/6)?
Played Southern Dunes this morning. You speak very well on the course. This was all spot on. I need to be up front and say that I don’t believe the course was in its best version of itself. The bunkers were terrible, in that they basically had no sand in them. And a good portion of them had standing water in them. Speaking of water, the course was incredibly wet. Like puddles every step in the fairways. This caused mud balls just about every shot. It was also Cart Path only, so it was very slow with everyone walking back and forth. I walked, which was a good decision, but everyone else were slow. So those were the disappointments.
But still very much enjoyed myself. The greens are certainly small by my standards, and played smaller then they looked. They have a lot going on. I think you need to play the course 5 times or so to know what you are doing. I hit the wrong club off the tee on multiple holes. And a few times I thought I flagged an approach, to find out that I wasn’t even on the green. Or hit it exactly where I wanted, only to find out there was a bunker there.
But I very much enjoyed the course, and the look was very cool. I don’t know if anyone said it in here, but it had a weird Australia vibe to it. I have never been to Australia, but it had that look. The dunes and the eucalyptus trees I think. Would play again for sure, wish it wasn’t so far out of town or would play more often when we come visit.
Thanks all for the help and opinions.
Feature not a bug. It’s supposed to be a sand belt design. They opened after overseed the 1st of the month so that’s a shame it was still that soggy.
I’m wondering if it just recently came out of overseed and has been getting watered heavily
Very much so. Cart path only still. I think only open for a few weeks.
That’s the biggest challenge with Oct/nov golf in the valley.
Planning a trip for February and staying in Kierland- I’ve got two rounds to book.
Wekopa is booked bothe mornings that I can play.
Looking to stay within 20-25 minutes of kierland and do not want to play troon north or stadium.
Is playing each course at talking stick my best bet or should I go for boulders/kierland/champions/something else? Thanks!
I would skip Kierland tbh. I worked there back in the day so maybe I’m numb to it but it just doesn’t have the juice to me. Will be in great shape though. Of the courses you haven’t considered I’d say the champions course needs to be considered. It’s better than the stadium course.
Is champs better than talking sick and boulders?
I would play O’odham at talking stick over any of the others by far. I can’t remember much about boulders. So if it was me playing two rounds I’m going O’odham and champions course. Or hoping to sneak a last second time at we ko pa saguaro as second pick.
Disclaimer I love coore Crenshaw
Me too!
Boulders is a tight resort course with beautiful rocks. Champs is a pretty good test of desert golf. Talking stick is the best of those options.
If you had two rounds at TS would you play O&P or double up on one?
As I mentioned a few posts back, gonna be down in the area in January. We booked our AirBnB in Chandler. My son and I booked a round at Southern Dunes on Saturday, January 18th at 11:50 if anyone wants to join us.
