Roll call: Phoenix/Scottsdale

How are we doing what tee time everyone is getting into? Just trying to figure out what time I should get there from Tempe to warm up a bit. also hoping the city card works for these times

Is anyone wanting to play more forward? Like 6000-6400?

The few times we’ve done this, we don’t decide and it’s just a free-for-all on the 1st tee haha

I just have to play with @matthew823 to complete the match play

sweet sounds good to me

I’m not against playing something forward. I normally play the blacks or the black/white combos. Or if we got a group for the whites. I’ll join!

Sweet! Black/White combo is as far back as I can handle. Also willing to play whites. I’m not breaking 80 from either the way I’m playing right now. Quota is 22 from Combo and 24 from Whites.

I’d be all about the whites or black/whites combo if I could make it. I usually look to play around 6200-6500ish.

Is anyone else that can’t make it this weekend for GCU, looking to make it up next weekend or the weekend after? If I can’t find another refuge member to play with do I take 0 or negative quota points?

Play and score normally, you’ve made plenty of effort to find someone to play with

Congratulations to @matthew823, beating me pretty handily (4&3) to clinch the 2nd match play victory…he was -3 thru 8, but opened the door and invited me in around the turn…I kindly said “thanks, but no thanks” and let him take the W.

He also lead the Quota field as well with a 73 for 38pts (+7 quota). Will post a bigger update sometime next week

First and above all, big thanks to @pushdraw for spearheading this match play bracket, and thanks to everyone who participated. It was a blast and a great opportunity to get out to some new courses and meet new Refugees. I know it is no small task to get get even an informal event like this set up and keep encouraging everyone to get matches played, reported, and and on schedule.

Secondly, I’d like to thank @pushdraw for scheduling the final on a day when my ball striking was on point. I told @Daler75 before the round I was worried because I don’t always play well at GCU, especially the par 3s, most of which are long (and irons are typically the weakest part of my game). But something came over me Saturday. I hit a quality 6 iron on the first and then stuffed one, again with a 6 iron, on #2 for a birdie. @pushdraw responded with a birdie of his own at #3, but I made a birdie and 4 and then rolled in a nice putt at #5 to be -3 through 5 holes … not my usual game, and it didn’t last but what a fun way to start. (Not sure @pushdraw thought so.)

As he mentioned, I was still -3 through 8, but made my only two bad swings on 9 (drive) and 10 (second shot) and made 6 on both of those holes, so my 4up lead turned into 2. I had every chance to get one back on #11 but an overly aggressive first putt turned into a three-wiggle bogey and all of a sudden it looked like momentum was really tuning, especially when I again ran my first putt well by on #12. But there I was able to coax the par putt in for a needed halve. Then the wind got @pushdraw’s tee shot on #13 and I birdied #14 to get back to 4up and it was pretty much a formality at that point.

73 and I three putted three times, but can’t complain at all about how I hit it or rolled it all day. Now in my last 20 rounds my best differential (1.3) and my worst (12.1) are both from GCU. Go figure.

Snagged a single tee time Friday morning. Unfortunately I don’t know when I’ll be able to get out there again before the end of the month, so I will be unable to pair up with a fellow refugee. I’ll get my score in this week. Just to make sure I have it right: Currently a 9.3. If I play the black tees, my course handicap is 11. 36-11 = 25 quota. Correct?

  1. Double bogey or worse = 0 / Bogey = 1 / Par = 2 / Birdie = 4 / Eagle = 6 / Albatross = 8 (you can pick up for double+)

That all looks correct to me.

Thanks for taking care of all of that!

My day just opened up tomorrow and I’m going to book a time over there. Hoping to at least post something respectable.

Just finished my round. Huge shout out to Rogelio who I was paired with. Pretty sure he was high as a kite but still guided me around the course like a champ since it was my first time out there

The greens bossed me around quite a bit but I really enjoyed the course. Would love to play it more often.

Ended with 17 for a -5 to quota

Anyone ever rented clubs at Talking Stick? Should I be concerned at all with ending up with a mediocre set of clubs?

I’m headed to Scottsdale this weekend and playing there this Sunday.

Planning to rent since it’s my only round of the trip but now second guessing myself.

Never have, and I don’t know what kind of equipment they have, but I’m pretty confident you’ll be fine. When a course sees a lot of tourists and charges a pretty penny, I’m inclined to think they’d have good rentals

A resort of that size, I would bet they’re renting full name brand sets but I can’t say so for sure from experience. If you give the shop a call, I’m sure they can let you know what they have.
