Hello fellow Refugees/Nestians, I’m considering putting together a tournament next year in the Phoenix area. There has never been one close to Phoenix that I know of and I would love to make it happen. I just don’t know if we would have the numbers. I’ve looked in the Nest directory and there’s a handful of us out here but not enough to do a tournament. How many Refugees do we have and who would be interest? I would also love to get some the NLU boys out as well. All thoughts and comments appreciated
Would absolutely be down if we can get enough people. Been itching for an official event out here.
ASU men’s golf is hosting the Thunderbird Collegiate at Papago Friday and Saturday. 36 Friday and 18 on Saturday. Admission is free. I’m headed out there Saturday most likely. Good opportunity to watch some live college golf and get a bit of a teaser for the NCAAs coming up at Grayhawk. The field consists of ASU, Arizona, Oregon State, UCLA, Utah, Baylor, Colorado State, Iowa State, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, South Florida, Texas Tech, TCU and UNLV.
Absolutely in. Can’t wait to see Big Randy in his element smoking a drive at some sun city courses
@Jwest3106 we have had some discussions of planning an event, mostly with @astrodupes. Where we left off at last was that due to COVID a lot of courses weren’t interested in talking about late 2021 or in to 2022 for events because they were / are up to their eyeballs in rescheduling events and crazy demand for golf.
During the WMPO I posted about hosting an event surrounding the PGA tournament next year, and there was some good reception, but @astrodupes and I were talking about giving it a few months to where they will have the books open for '22 events.
What would you be thinking? One of the things I’ve been personally struggling with is trying to find a balance between quality golf and cost. Host something in the summer, and it is very hot. Host an event between October - April and it is very expensive (read: lots of locals may not be interested, when we can play the same course for 1/4 of the price during the summer)
In terms of #s, it can really be as few or as many as you want, there’s nothing saying you need to have minimum #s to plan something…and in my own experiences with Refuge events, they tend to just take off once there are some details available.
Basically I think it is best left at this, if you want to plan something, run with it and just do it…and I’m confident people will come. Let me know how I can help
EDIT: also, get involved with us locally, we’ve had a few match play brackets with 16 guys…if you’re just looking to play with more people, we already do that!
Would definitely be interested.
I would love to, is this done regularly or just organized randomly
Sorry, what are you referring to with this question? Just match play or playing locally?
We’re in the semifinals of our 2nd match play bracket, and will likely try to drum up some sort of “summer league” or tournament, but hoping to move away from doing another match play. Other than that, I’d just say to check in on this thread, people might post tee times (or have spots available) or we might organize a small meet-up from time to time.
Hey y’all, happen to have Friday 4/23 and Monday 4/26 off of work. Pretty much all my regular golf buddies work M-F gigs but I’m looking to get out at least one, if not both, of those days. If anyone wants to get out let me know. Don’t have anything lined up as of yet but wanted to throw a feeler out there.
You hoping to play early or afternoon (2nd 18 haha) an option?
Open all day both days. Afternoons are perfectly fine.
Yes I was referring to the match play but I’ll definitely be checking this thread regularly from here on out. I would love to meet up with some fellow Refugees/Nestians
Awesome, where do you live / normally play? We’ve got the valley pretty well covered with folks.
I could be talking into playing into a NLU AZ event as well.
Chandler
I have been away from the refuge for a little bit but I would be in for an official NLU event. I think summer would be a perfect time/the most AZ thing to do.
The match play brackets look fun also but are just a lot of commitment after being part of the first one.
Yeah, my hope is to have something different than another match play but I think there’d still be some expectation of commitment (commitments to play golf, could be worse)
Could be cool to do something for the summer and do an event / meet up as the “final” late summer
Yeah I get that. Maybe more single day events. I can commit to a day, not 5 most months

One-day, 12 man (6v6) mini Ryder Cup style event at Southern Dunes?
2 people purchase the six pack (guessing they’ll offer it again this year) and split up the rounds with the 5 other teammates. $27 a person, and everyone gets a beer and a golf ball haha.
Singles or four ball round at the championship course in the morning, and then in the afternoon a couple of four ball or alt shot loops around the #miniDunes course?
Edit: 6 day booking window could be a wrinkle, but would just need to find 3 back-to-back-to-back open tee times.
Very in on this idea
