Visiting in-laws in Orlando (Longwood) next week. Usually try and get a walk or two around WP9 if I can and have also got up to Deltona club in the past. Anyone here played semi-recently and know if it’s in okay shape? Really enjoyed the stroll around there in the past.
@Big_RanDeer and @LiveAdam played in back in the spring. Conditities were pretty awful. Lot of the waste areas looked as if they hadn’t been attempting to maintain them. Fairways weren’t great either. I don’t recall the greens being in horrible shape though.
He’s misremembering then lots of areas that were more sand than grass on the greens. Property is perfect for a golf course, it just needs to be maintained.
Deltona Club has great bones! When it was regularly in decent shape pre-Covid it was one of the cheapest tee times in central Florida - a total steal. I haven’t been out there in years.
Bummer to hear, but appreciate the intel. Definitely a bit shaggy when I was out there a bit a few winters ago but sounds like it’s really deteriorated since then.
Any other recs or maybe more importantly places to avoid at the moment? I’m taking the week so pace/crowds hopefully won’t be an issue for me.
Dubsdread & Rio Pinar appear to be better tracks that aren’t too far of a drive from where I’ll be. Have gotten down to Southern Dunes once before but that is kind of an all-day roundtrip from Longwood.
I recommend you splurge for at least one round for something like Grand Cypress, Shingle Creek, or Waldorf Astoria. Or make a day trip out to Cabot Citrus Farms Karoo before they go into their $$$ walking-only season (YMMV on whether you like it).
If you’ve got a connection for private access the Legacy Club at Alaqua Lakes is a nice Faz in your area. Avoid Red Tail in Sorrento. Can’t speak to conditions at other area courses like Timucuan, Mayfair, DeBary, etc.
Red Tail totally lost their greens at some point and haven’t gotten them back. I agree it used to be great. Haven’t played Eagle Dunes or Black Bear in quite a while, so can’t speak to current conditions. Deer Island is always low key in good shape though.
Awesome, next important question there: is it a manageable walk?
Also, if anyone has the ability to play during a weekday (Friday being most likely I would guess) I would enjoy the chance to make a new internet friend.
Good Morning - I live in Boston and I’m flying down to Orlando tomorrow for a vacation with the family - I fly out on the 11th.
My dad, brother and I have a couple rounds lined up but as the one without kids I will have a LOT more time for golf than they do. If anybody down there wants to play or has suggestions on where I should go if I’m rolling solo please let me know.
I’m staying at Reunion Resort in Kissimmee and will have a car and my sticks. Index is a 6.
Would be cool to meet some locals - Also, I check my email more frequently than the message board so feel free to reach out to me at info@eandersonoriginals.com.
[Apologize in advance for this shameless plug for my art business I just started a couple years ago in my mid-30s… www.eandersonoriginals.com is my website and it needs to be updated, but feel free to check it out if you’re into art - I have originals for sale and do a lot of custom commissions… Including a handful of golf-related pieces. Here’s a few I made for Kittansett - The course I grew up on in MA - These are in the pro shop.]
Grand Cypress and Southern Dunes in March should be in about as good of conditions as they can offer (La Niña FL winter) If considering ChampionsGate choose the National over the International course. Also check into Reunion Resort in the area, has 54 holes.
