Roll Call: Orlando, FL Golfers

@Peak_Golf writes…

Hey golf sickos, I’m bringing the family down from the frozen white of Montana next week (thanksgiving week 2020). I’m only going to get maybe 2 rounds in and I’m looking for 1 course to play in Orlando (or very nearby), so if you have any suggestions I’d love to hear them. Also, I’m thinking of making a pilgrimage to Jacksonville on Wednesday (the day before thanksgiving) to play the much lauded Jax Beach. If that’s a completely mental idea I’ll listen to that argument as well. Last thing, I’ll be playing as a single, if anyone would like to meet and enjoy a round with some beers that’d be great.

Anyway, any and all input would be appreciated,

Thanks sickos.

I’m playing Winter Park on Monday at 10:03 (just booked the tee time, today is the first day the tee sheet is open for Monday, and El Campeon Friday at 10:12 if either of those are of interest. I’m playing alone but my son will likely be with me. Anyone is welcome to join.
I might get a round Saturday. TBD.

I like both OCN courses. If I had to pick one I would play PL.

I agree with this on 17. If we are talking about worst holes on earth nominees, 18 has to be way up there. Absolutely terrible hole.

Jax Beach is a lot of fun, but I’m not sure it’s worth a pilgrimage from Orlando. Jax Beach is everything a good, no-frills muni should be. It stands out to me for its conditioning and being one of the best of its kind. Seriously far and away the best greens I’ve played on at that price point. With the time spent driving up there you could play another 18 in Orlando

18 is frustrating as there is really only a risk or reward from the tips. If I am playing the Black Tees with friends it’s basically just a chip driver to 250 driver and I have at worst 150 left to the hole. If the yardage to the water was just a little bit more it would at least give me the risk/reward of taking the water on with driver and getting it perilously close or laying back to a comfortable full carry club. I do love how bonkers the green is on 18 though. Even if you get it there in two, that’s probably one of the frew greens I would ever 3-putt if you were out of position and the wind was blowing.

I agree on 9 being the worst hole I have probably ever played. Someone needs to sneak out there with a chainsaw one night and take down one of the center trees or we need to get “fortunate” during one of our hurricanes and hope nature does the lord’s work for us.

Gentlemen, I have a twosome available at TPC Stadium 12/12 at 10 AM. The fine fellow who’s hosting us is a member and gets 50% off the rack rate. Still a steep round, but hopefully worth it! If you’re interested in tagging along, feel free to shoot me a DM.:+1:t2:

Juliet Falls is another “in the middle of nowhere” gems. It is near Ocala, closer to the west coast in Dunnellon. Fun course with a great bar.

An FYI to greater Orlando, and more specifically Space Coast Refugees: the greens at Baytree National are in great shape right now, probably rolling at 10-10.5.

I am heading down to Orlando from Indiana next week. I have one day (12/20) with no set plans and I am going to try to sneak away from the Disney area and get a round in while I am in warm weather. I really want to play WP9. I am going to try and get out as early as I can to minimize the damage of leaving the family. I will be solo (I assume I will get paired with a twosome or threesome on a Sunday morning). How long am l looking at door-to-door to drive from Disney area to WP9, play 9, and drive back?

Any other advice?

Drive should take roughly 45min to an hour depending on the traffic.

The round itself 80-90min depending on the pace. I’ve played there a bunch and my slowest round was last week almost two hours got suck behind a dreadfully slow group.

One other thing to note is that AM weekend times can be difficult as they only have a 3 day booking window for the public.

Agree. If you want something in the morning I would suggest getting on at midnight to book. I’m guessing members can book through the shop more than 3 days ahead so I bet a lot of early ones go that way.
WP9 is definitely worth it.

WP9. Do it!
I have played various courses in the Orlando area. Winter Park is the one I keep thinking about. I didn’t even have time to finish my 9 holes (because of scheduling issue on my end) Ever since being there in October, I have been thinking of when I can get back to it.

This is accurate. Weekend morning tee times are tough to find online or when you call the pro shop. But I’ve also been there on a weekend and only had 3 in my group, seen others short of 4, etc.

I’d try the midnight thing (i.e. Wednesday evening into Thursday for a Sunday morning time), but I’d also bet you could either a) talk your way into a being a 5th (it’s far from a private club vibe there); or b) show up and wait until there’s an empty spot. That’s a big gamble for a 45-minute drive, but I’d say it’s better than 50/50 that it works out for you.

This drive time estimation is NOT going to work for my wife hahaha.

I live five minutes from WP9. If you can try to get there in the morning coming from Disney or some other non-peak time, you should be able to do it in half an hour. It’s worth the drive. I’m biased, but the place is a blast.

I would agree with this. Sunday morning = hard for tee times but better for traffic.

I was able to get a 7:48 tee time so I am going to go for it. Looking forward to it. Thanks for the advice.
