Roll Call: Omaha/Lincoln

No Dinkers? No Stellas?

Still a really good list, honestly. Muchachos, however, was a huge disappointment. Smoked meats were dry, didn’t give enough sauce on a three meat plate, the mac n cheese is bland.

I went VERY early in the Omaha location’s life, so I will definitely try it again…but man, I’m going to need to see something better.

Also…not having any Mexican beers (at least when I went) is a massive own-goal and needs to be addressed.

My company designed Runza HQ. It’s a nice building, please don’t burn it down… you might risk starting a grass fire at Firethorn.

Nothing screams Runza more than Firethorn CC life!

Picture it now. …3 sheets to the wind scott frost - stumbles over to runza hq - fresh off getting booted from firethorn…again…shirt untucked and all - and attempts to order a swiss mushroom meal at the security desk in the lobby.

SUPER unpopular opinion…

While I’d never want any course to burn down, Firethorn is overhyped.

EDIT*…I thought I’d process this a little more.

It’s a very good golf course. I’ve played it three times, and while I really think that 11-12 is a really nice little 1-2 combo, I don’t have a lot of other moments on the course that make me really pause and think, “Great hole.”

The most negative thing I’ll say…it’s like a perfectly conditioned semi-private that was built to sell houses. Courses that play through neighborhoods bug me. I like big square properties where the houses are only on the perimeter. Having property on a golf course is a way to sell lots, and I get it…but I don’t think that approach has ever resulted in great golf courses.

But please…nobody burn down Runza HQ, no matter what the collateral damage might be.

I actually think this take will be better received than youre anticipating.

Im not sure Firethorn gets the praise it does if you took Dye’s name off the architecture sheet :man_shrugging:t2:

I’m a really big fan of Firethorn, there are a ton of homes on it which is less than great, but as far as ranking Omaha/Lincoln top private courses? It would probably be in my top 5 (of what I’ve played)

  1. OCC (Duh)
  2. HHC
  3. Firethorn
  4. Hillcrest
  5. ?

Y’all fancy huh?

I’ve never played any of the private courses. Maybe one day.

Dont get me wrong - it belongs in the top 5 as far as Neb metro area courses…id probably slot it in the 4 maybe 5 hole… granted I havent played Hillcrest

Doesn’t help that both times ive been fortunate enough to play there i had totally lost my game leading into the round(s).

Would probably go

  1. OCC
  2. HHC
3-4-5 order tbd (presumably Hillcrest) Firethorn and ive always had a soft spot for The Players Club.

I haven’t played Oak Hills since all the work they have done, and I’ve heard good things, so that could easily slide up there. Nor have I played LCC, which I’ve heard is solid. I just think Firethorn asks pretty direct questions and actually tends to play easier/wider than it looks, but like a lot of Dyes, can play tricks on you.

Appreciate you sittin on this block, but it’s not gonna jump up your list at all :joy:

LCC is a lot of fun and the conditions are the best out of the Lincoln private courses but it definitely has that older country club feel of you better be in the fairway otherwise you’ll be dealing with trees. It’s pretty straightforward if you stay in the short grass. A good family friend is a member and I’ve been out there a handful times and every time I have a good time.

I get the OCC, HHC rankings but a little surprised to see zero mention of Champions which I’m def taking over Players, Shadow, LCC (too short/tight). Haven’t played Hillcrest, though.

It’s also shocking that Champions doesn’t really run through neighborhoods given it was built in the 1990’s. Also, huge negative for Players that it’s one of the worst walks in town.

I admittedly havent played Champions in roughly 20 yrs - so was totally unsure of if it had aged well or not.

Agree on shadow and LCC / and understand that my players fondness is certainly not common.
