I am personally offended you did not tell any Tulsans you were in town.
Just kidding. And yes Canyons is crazy and pretty fun to play. Not exactly walking friendly. I am stoked that they are dropping a chunk of money to renovate it. If only the City if Tulsa would stop finding every excuse under the sun and do the same.
haha yeah I know I know. Was in town for an event Saturday night with a group and we raced around the course as quickly as we could - probably wouldnāt have been a super fun round to join us for!
I canāt imagine walking that course - would be fun to do but I think it would qualify as a hike rather than a round of golf. Has tons of fun shots though - looking down to the green from the 12th tee box was quite the experience. Weāll have to check it out after it reopens. And agreed re: City of Tulsa courses. I presume there hasnāt been any good news recently on that front?
No news.
The advisory committee to the Mayor and Parks Director (Nick Sidorakis, GM of Southern Hills; Randy Heckenkemper, Course Designer; Ken MacLeod, Publisher of Golf Oklahoma; and a guy who used to work for the city whose name escapes me at the moment) has had one meeting. Apparently it was not very productive and mainly consisted of the Parks Director encouraging looking at other options for passing the buck and management/responsibility for the courses such as getting one of the tribes involved or some public/private partnership.
Refugee Meetup - Big Cedar:
I posted this with the Roll Call St. Louis & KC, but wanted to share it here are well as many here are probably closest. It should be an awesome time and the guys at Big Cedar cut us some amazing rates.
All the details are in the Google Doc (please holler at me if having any issues making edits)

*We are limited to the first 20 confirmed
Lodging is TBD for now - there are a plethora of houses for rent in the area - its off-season for most the home owners. There are also a number of hotels in the area.
Take a look - and let me know if you have any questions - Iāll get a separate thread spun up soon.
Yeah the Canyons is probably as close as Iāll come to playing a real life Golden Tee course. Especially as it looked like they had stopped watering the greens (they were mostly in good shape - just insanely fast) and it was windy. We had putts that would start rolling backwards after coming to an initial stop. Zach Johnson would not have been a fan.
Re my thumb, I confirmed the hypothesis that a table saw kicking back a 5 inch piece of 2"x4" will easily snap a thumb (first metacarpal) in two. Had pins in it for a little while but could have been a lot worse! Almost out of the woods and now working on getting the strength/mobility back.
Playing one-handed has actually been kinda fun and relatively successful (compared to my sorry two-handed game at least) - though Iām ready to get back to playing āfor real!ā
Norman OK; 15yr resident ex-North Carolina(Morehead City / Raleigh)
I play the tracks here in the area; Westwood, The Links(previous āmemberā), Jimmie Austin(favorite, thank you discount for working on campus), occasionally a trip up to TinkerAFB for the free air-show.
Iām a 16hcp, which equates to some moments of brilliance, and moments of horror.
Glad to be here, likely wont post a ton, but am interested in meet-ups. Iāll check in regularly. Thanks for having me.
I managed an evening 9 at Adams GC (local muni here in Bartlesville) last week. Place is finally getting green and the putting surfaces are slowly getting the attention they have sorely needed. Shot a 46 (minus mulligans) on the front and not unhappy about it.
The place somehow is still getting pretty busy on weekends, so I avoid it then. Iāll keep trying to get in a weekday 9 here and there in the evenings so long as my work schedule permits. Iād love to mix things up and get down to some of the public courses in Tulsa now and then, but given the public health situation I just donāt think thatās worth the risk.
I bet. If youāre willing to make the drive, I bet there are some courses still open (with precautions) out around some of the more rural towns. Personally feel lucky to be in a place like Bartlesville at a time like this where it hasnāt hit too hard⦠yet.
according to The Grint, I may be able to go down to Purcell and play. I have a long weekend this week, so I have time to explore, maybe take a small trip.
My parents just acquired a lake house on Grand which will be bringing me down to North Eastern Oklahoma every available weekend. Excited to learn more about the red dirt down yonder!
Pretty slim pickins for golf in the area.
Shangri La being the far and away best but itās $100-140 on a weekend but definitely worth playing.
Patricia Island is usually in good shape and fun to play because you can definitely make some birdies. But thereās a couple of really shitty holes. Theyāve tried to cater more to members recently so not sure what the rates are.
Peoria Ridge in Miami is not on the lake but depending on where your parentsā place is it isnāt too far. I like it a lot and itās usually cheap. They have anew clubhouse and spent some money on maintenance in the last few years.
Awesome advice man. We are pretty close to Shangri La and will have to at least give it a try. They landed in the Afton area and have a local place that is within walking distance (and the house came with a golf cart lol). It is a really weird price point - $60 for a daily fee or $100 for a monthly membership. Imagine it is a goat track but if I can bust out and get in 18 before the boat is pulling out, then we are really really happy.
Additionally, I see this as a home base where I can launch from and explore. So taking any reqs for courses within an hour or two of Tulsa.
Really excited to spend time down there. Iāve not got much experience with the state though it plays a big role in my parents and fiances parents pasts.
I always forget about The Coves since Iāve never played it. Might be a hidden gem, definitely one of the only courses in the area I havenāt played.
Tulsa public golf kinda stinks but if you have some private course hook ups itās pretty good.
Southern Hills obviously, Tulsa CC is a Tillinghast with a recent Rees-ification but itās solid. Cedar Ridge hosted the LPGA event we used to have, Golf Club of Oklahoma is a Faz, The Oaks is also a Tillinghast and is my favorite besides Southern Hills.
Plenty of goat tracks and what not spread around the area as well.
Keep in mind this is pronouced, My-Am-Ah, for some reason. Silly Okies
EDIT : I may be in Norman, but Wifeās family is in the Tulsa area. Totally willing to make a trip!
@sundaybag if the weather has been good for 2 weeks straight, Adams Muni in Bartlesville isnāt terrible. But post-storm, the place stays wet for a week. Choose a date wisely and lmk if/when you roll through town.
