Roll Call: Ohio (OATW adjacent) and localized ice cream debates (Part 1)

Ownership of Tartan had turned over multiple times over the last 15 years. I think Club Corp owns them now. They ran the former head pro out who was a great guy and very well respected professional in the sectional. They’ve tried to make the club more elite but I’m not certain the market will really bare that with MVGC right next door.

I don’t find getting tee times at SRCC or Kinsale difficult. If you want to play on a weekend morning you’ll want to book the day (two weeks out) the tee sheet opens. If not there are always people dropping out a few days before. One of the things that have made tee times a little harder is actually Covid. Member have an option of taking a solo cart so to ensure they don’t run out of carts on weekends the tee times on the 40s at SRCC and 50s at Kinsale are not available. So on weekend mornings tee time inventory is down 17%. Also, with less people traveling that has increased member play.

With all that said I still have never had a problem getting what I need.

My first time meeting other Refugees. Come to find out…@Ohiojohnny and I are from the same town. Didn’t recognize him at first and him dropping my last name was a bit of a surprise. It’s been quite awhile since I’ve had as much fun while playing so poorly. What an awesome day yesterday!

Fellow ASU grad here. Except I was there when Ron J. Ham was on campus. Not too many of us in central Ohio.

Nice! We are definitely few and far between in Cbus. Most of our fellow alums no doubt stayed in locations with longer golf seasons (though the last few years have been solid here).

Looking for some public courses in the Dayton area. I’ve played Community and Clear Creek at the Practice Center. Any other recommendations?

Yankee Trace, Heatherwoode, Pipestone. That’s probably the upper echelon ones. Start with those, then you can go from there.

Heatherwood is probably my favorite

Cassell Hills in vandalia is a good deal

Yankee trace Is a good course, maybe a bit over priced

Yankee is the most overrated course in Dayton. Heatherwoode is the best public

It might be overrated, but it isn’t awful, especially compared to what’s around. I’d rather play Yankee than almost anything else in the area.

I would throw Beavercreek into the mix as well.

Forgot about B-Creek. That’s a miss by me. And I just played it a few weeks ago.

You seem to be pretty plugged in to the central Ohio private scene, what do you know about Heritage out in Hilliard?

Do not know the membership details, but I have played Heritage a ton.

It’s not my favorite layout, so I don’t think I’d want to play it as my main course. Has some cool holes and has some stupid holes. PB dye layout with plenty of water. If you are a “woke architecture” guy look elsewhere. If you are into more modern courses vs classic, and you like tricky tee shots/second shots without being impossibly tough then it might be for you.

I’ve never played it. I’ve heard it’s a fun day but not necessarily something you need to go out of your way to check off. If I get invited out there or have a tournament I would certainly go.

The price is intriguing. For 40 and under it’s $350/mo with $750 initiation. That’s with the ClubCorp ONE benefits of access to other clubs, with Firestone being one of the clubs.

Anyone ever play in the CDGA events? I just played in my second one yesterday, a 2 man scramble at Hickory Hills. They do a really good job with these events and they play solid courses. There is a real sense of professionalism that I really appreciate.

For what it’s worth, Hickory Hills is a great course and the type I’d like to join if it wasn’t so far away (Grove City). Holes 1 and 10 are tough ways to start your 9. 18 is a bit gimmicky, especially since there is a hole just like it on the back side. With the big valley carries for those two holes, I don’t know how a beginner could even play it without picking up well before the green.

I have a couple of friends that joined this year and thus far they really like it. Played once with them this season and round was under 4 hours. From what they told me that seems to be the norm. As others have said the course is fine some really good holes and not so good holes. The greens were good the time I played with some good variety.

I usually play in the two man scramble and the am/am. I passed on the two man scramble as I’m not a huge Hickory Hills fan. The event was originally supposed to be at Scioto Reserve but was postponed due to Covid. Definitely would have played in it if they could have kept it there since I’ve played well over 1,000 rounds there. I did play in the Am Am at Rattlesnake earlier this month.

I’m friends with Matt Lefferts who runs the CDGA/OGA and he is just a great person. One of the best in the entire central Ohio golf community.
