The answer here is that the course doesn’t want to find out who it was because it’s one of their members and there’s not any real downside to just letting it blow over
I’m happy to hear that your dog will be ok. I was genuinely dreading reading your post in fear of what the result for your dog was.
I had a pretty disappointing experience at the end of June with my own club(s). I’m a member at Kinsale/Scioto Reserve. I was out playing an evening round at Scioto Reserve when on the 15th green I got a call from my teenage daughter. She was driving north on Sawmill Parkway when her car was hit by errant drive off of the 5th tee box at Kinsale. The golf ball hit the car on the fly and broke the grill (thankfully one of the cheapest places on the car to get hit). I told her to drive to the pro shop and see if they could help identify the golfers. Fortunately the shop was still open and with the carts having gps they were able to narrow down the groups to a few possible suspects. When those groups finished up 9 they all denied hitting a ball onto the road. The shop didn’t want to really deal with it anyways. By the time I finished up my round at Scioto Reserve and drove over to Kinsale any discussions were mostly over. My wife did get there before me and tried to help. In the end we got stuck with a $700 repair bill because our fellow members couldn’t fess up. The kicker too, was my daughter was just taking dinner to one of her friends who was life guarding at Kinsale that night. It turned out to be a pretty expensive nice thing that she was doing…
I wonder how clubs normally deal with stuff like that. I can think of a few private courses with tee balls that parallel a public road or the driveway and look, stuff happens. I’ve hit a hook or two that ends up on or crossing the road. Its not malicious, obviously I wasn’t trying to miss the fairway by 40 yards.
The thing with the dog was obviously done with malicious intent, so there is a line between that and hitting a golf ball so far off line that it hits a car. But that line is probably closer to a baseball stadium and the warning about things flying into the stands, than the club having to shell out for what is essentially an act of god.
I understand your frustration, I’d be pissed if the same thing happened to me, but in this case assuming it was an accident and the golfer wasn’t intentionally launching balls at the road nobody legally did anything wrong in this scenario.
I get that there’s a difference between legally wrong and morally wrong, but even still if it was just an accident I’m not sure I’d be willing to pay hundreds to fix someone’s car due to an errant tee shot. I know I wouldn’t offer if I hit a house, so I don’t think I would do it for a car either.
Could it have been possible that whoever hit it didn’t realize it reached the road/hit a car?
Yes, the dog situation is much much worse.
I also think if you build a house on a golf course you are assuming risk of being hit. I would still pay if I damaged someone’s house even though in Ohio I don’t think the golfer is liable in that situation.
The car situation is a little more tricky. Do we need to assume liablilty just for driving by a golf course? I’ve seen a car or two hit (usually on the bounce) and have definitely seen balls hit onto the road from that specific tee box.
The disappointing part really though is everyone denying it. My daughter was in the pro shop within ten minutes of being hit and it was pretty obvious the few groups who could have possibly done it based on where the carts were.
No, it would be very obvious it would be going into the road and sound of hitting the car would be even more obvious.
They could also, fess up, apologize, and say they are not liable, as opposed to just denying it like a coward.
Nice to see the 3 posts, 90 follower Chardon Lakes IG account is getting eviscerated with comments on their most recent post. One comment had a good idea - ‘Tee times about to be booked with no one showing up.’
Bumping this in here, we have one spot open for this Final Four matchup at Heatherwoode.
Update: spot has been filled
Chardon lakes is a public course, no cart gps, etc. I’ve played there many times, it’s just a country course but a nice layout and worth playing. Greens are tough.
I feel like they’re getting blasted here but didn’t do much wrong. They cooperated and tried to help police.
Everyone survive storms ok tonight?
Yep. Public course. Pretty solid although there are 2-3 absolutely idiotic holes. Greens are Sleepy-esque. Houses show up on the back nine.
Registration for the Walk in the Park closes in just under three weeks! There’s 5 spots left, so if you aren’t signed up… you know what to do!
I have been involved in 2 situations where a member of my group hit a passing car on highway, both situations drivers came into club immediately with busted windshields so it was very obvious who was playing the hole when the car was hit. In both of these situations my playing partners took onus of the situation and made things right, both instances were at least covered under their home insurance plans. I do think your right though, that they technically would not had to of accepted fault, at least from what I remember at the time.
One of the guys in my practice round group was a NS for the qualifier and came all the way from Boston.
Another guy in the group in front of us was shooting a million and WD’d.
It is a shame, but I’m sure a lot of the field are tourists, just there to see Camargo and move on. There was a strong vibe that they won’t be hosting again.
I have been trying to get out there for years and keep striking out. Will be very disappointing if they don’t host again
Feels like every time Camargo hosts something USGA related the vibe is completely unwelcoming.
I would assume they are only doing it to stay in the USGA’s good graces and potentially host a bigger event at some point in the future, so they’ll likely begrudgingly stay in the rotation for qualifiers and what not.
Granted I didn’t play, but I carried for @GGates18 there a few years ago and I didn’t get the unwelcoming vibe at all.
Very confused by the recent posts. Camargo has, except when they had their renovation, hosted the USGA qualifier for decades now, no?
Edit: by “decades” I mean “since 1928.”
