Roll Call: Ohio (OATW adjacent) 2025 Major now official

I enjoyed it! Definitely some tree tunnels from the blue tees, so we played the back one up. It was pretty soggy so we had little roll out. I’d like to play again when it’s a bit drier.

@pjsutherland @SRS_One what’d ya’ll think?!

After taking some time to think about it more, I feel like it was perfectly fine.

The front 9 would be exponentially better with a bunch of tree removal close to tee boxes. @AZacOfAllTrades described it accurately as a tree tunnel off most tees. I didn’t think trees down most holes were unreasonable, but they really need to clean up near the boxes.

Other notes on the front: no course like that (non-tournament) should have so many 200+ yard par 3’s, and #4 might be one of the worst holes I’ve ever played.

The back 9 felt like so many other courses we’ve all played. @SRS_One made a great call that it was likely developed much later than the front, which we found out was the case afterwards. It had some nice views, but was relatively forgettable.

Net, I don’t understand the hype, but it delivered strong value at $60 for a 9am Sunday round. I’d like another crack at it without such soaked fairways, but I won’t be fighting to get back quickly.

Strong opinions. I definitely agree with some tree removal, especially around the tees, though I am not diametrically opposed to two tiered fairways.

Other fair points are the would be the back nine tails off a bit, though I thought it finished pretty strongly.

My main point of contention was that I paid to ride for $50 on a weekday and got a free breakfast, and I thought the course was of good quality. That’s hard to find these days

I heard it compared to Blue Ash by more than one person, and I think that’s a fair comp. At least $25 dollars cheaper, and a free breakfast, out of 10 rounds, I’m taking my money to Snow Hill 7 times to 3 for Blue Ash

Blue Ash is $60 out the door any day or time of the week, so the $25 difference you claim is not accurate. It’s a $10 difference on weekdays and the same price as Snow Hill on weekends.

I totally agree Snow Hill is a good deal. It’s much better than the average course you typically get around here for that money, although the time and cost for the 70 minute drive each way from Cincinnati shouldn’t be ignored.

If I’m doing the 10 round split, I’m taking Blue Ash at least 8 out of 10, and probably 9 times. I don’t think Snow Hill is bad by any means, but those courses aren’t even close in my opinion, especially in their current condition.

I thought I paid more than that. It’s been a couple years since I played it. From what I remember, the greens are better, but the back nine dragged quite a bit, until 18. Im was coming from North of Wilmington. And no free biscuits and Gravy with scrambled eggs. I like both courses quite a bit.

If you still have a towel left I’ll take one, Jim

You got one

You’re going to love Moraine. It’s such a good track. I would say Heatherwoode is probably the best public course in the Dayton area and if you’re going to play somewhere I would recommend there. It typically drains well since it’s looking like a soggy weekend.

said, how many people? Like two or three? I don’t think I could disagree with this statement more.

Some public golf course rating discourse is exactly what this thread needs here in the dog days of summer. Aaaaaaand, FIGHT

Glad to hear you didn’t think my conclusions were crazy. I think I was bothered last year by it because the place has so much potential if they fixed this aspect.

He is allowed to like Heatherwoode, but I do not see myself playing there ever again (and not just because I live in Michigan now).

Architecturally it’s supremely uninteresting.

We ran the Ohio Women’s Open at Heatherwoode and they were so accommodating as a staff. I was genuinely impressed.

If uninteresting architecture was our make or break measurement for Ohio public golf, we’d have basically nowhere to play

or people just have different ideas of what is interesting too which I’m willing to admit. I won’t disagree that the staff there and the overall experience is pretty good there. I just think there are more interesting courses in the Dayton area specifically.

for sure my comment came across a bit more snarky than needed. Sorry! I just have big opinions. Especially on Dayton area courses.

Not at all. Our entire group was in the exact same boat as you.

#6 is the perfect example: a 230yd par 3 from the back box with this shoot and a funky green where you can’t access part of it due to the shoot.

4 was the only bad hole. I’m not against split/tiered fairways, but the smart places to drive the ball resulted in really long approach shots (200+) into a par 4, which felt unreasonable. Both fairways really pinched at 250+.

I had a similarly impressive experience with a large charity outing at Heatherwoode. Their team did a great job and I enjoy the course a lot.

Not sure if it’s my favorite public in Dayton, but definitely in the conversation.
