Roll Call: Ohio (OATW adjacent) 2025 Major now official

I can get behind points based on wins for match play going towards the entry but it’s still means we would need to have our match play finished by the time we play in the qualifier. If they have brackets made by this coming Monday that would give us 24 weeks to complete the match play season which granted isn’t a lot of time for how spread out everyone is I get that. But like we’ve said in the past if your going to sign up to compete in it everyone just has to put in the effort to get them in. That’s why I brought up the if your schedules don’t match up exactly we could do something like if me and @Conley76 were supposed to play one another but we just can’t find a day that works for both of us but we decide on a course that’s half way between us. Then say on Thursday Conley and another refuge member play that course and he keeps his score card then I play it on Saturday with a refuge member and we both send each other our scores and tally up who would of won the match. Just something to try and get everyone to play the matches that there supposed to but keeping in mind that most of y’all have kids and other shit going on and might not have as much flexibility or have more shit than can pop up randomly than a single kid less guy like myself

Most I’ve seen are at ~80% of full-freight, don’t like it but can’t blame them. They were essentially closed for the first 2 months of the year which at least in SW Ohio is not normal.

TBH I didn’t care what it cost. The greens at Yankee Trace were punched and that cost me an eagle. I was just happy to finally get out and play in 2025

My two cents, but other roost events shouldn’t count or should be heavily watered down towards qualifying for our roost.

I think a good way to drive participation in OATW events is to weigh those more heavily. Last year quite a few people went to the Park Mammoth event rather than the Rock event. More power to people if they want to do that but personally I think OATW events should count more towards determining OATW representatives.

Because The Extinction was announced several months earlier.

Just found out, thanks to @ChickPhilA and @Privatecollection , that we are able to get H&b at wholesale pricing for roost.

Agreed which is why they already were. We can adjust that even more if there is interest, but only one person received 10 points for that event with all others only getting 5. The minimum anyone received for the Rock was 10 points with several earning 25. The most points anyone got for non-OATW events was 20 (for 3 events).

Now is the time of year for any adjustments, so I am happy to tweak as necessary.

To quote myself from earlier.

We as a group need to be better at advanced planning to prevent people from having these conflicts.

I think it needs to be more nuanced than that.

If the events are the same size, then I’m totally with you… but The Extinction was a major with 70+ participants and The Rock was what, a dozen guis?

Plus the scheduling issues @Conley76 already mentioned. A bunch of us would’ve loved to play in The Rock but The Extinction was announced months before its date was set.

I’m never going to play in enough events for it to really matter personally for me to earn a spot on the team, especially when we have a handful of events a year and a majority of them are well north of Columbus… but it’s tough to expect damn near 100% attendance when we don’t have the schedule locked until the spring.

Was talking to the Dry Heat guis recently, and theirs is definitely more performance based than participation.

If I remember correctly, the four spots are:

  1. Matchplay winner
  2. Season long points
  3. 1H season points
  4. 2H season points

2-4 incorporate both Roost-wide events and the more informal small games that are played and seem to be central to their Roost culture. Weighted toward events. You have to participate to earn points, obviously, but if you’re not winning, you’re not on the team. And we shouldn’t forget they benefit from a 12-month golf season.

@spicychimis might remember details I’m missing.

And if I remember from the RCC team profiles last year, a lot of Roosts operate similarly where there are 3-4 different pathways to inclusion and each of them skew performance in events/seasons.

My two cents, as a high capper who this likely won’t benefit: Participation is good. But if we reward participation, it should only be with one spot, and the formula for that could be similar to today. Beyond that, Matchplay Winner (pending timing), low OATW gross at Major (assuming different than NIT spot), points race for a select “series” of our top tier events, etc.

TLDR A mix of entry points might create a nice balance of rewarding participation vs performance. Also fully recognize it could take a season or two to transition to a new/different approach—especially if we as a group need to get better at setting a schedule prior to season’s start. In my opinion, it’s worth the work and I’m happy to help however I can.

Let me know who I should coordinate with on our order! Hopefully that gets some people that were mulling over the price onto the order sheet.

How about raffle style where every event that you enter (or your results in said event) gets you a certain number of tickets? Make it like the NBA draft lottery

This sounds right from my recollection

This doesn’t sound much different than what we are doing depending on how the structure of the points purse distribution is done. The addition of the informal small games is certainly welcome as long as individuals are able to take on that additional responsibility of tracking it. The only big difference is their match play winner auto qualification.

And this helps drastically with that. We realistically have 3-4 of most people’s busiest months to complete the entire tournament.

Some of this also circles back to what the groups desire is for the pure competition.

If we wanted to get deep on moneyballing the situation it would require us to do a deeper dive into the format of the Roost championship and shifting our focus for regular events to more heavily favor similarly formatted events. I don’t get the impression that the group is interested in playing a ton of quota games, but that may be skewed by some of the more vocal participants.

What is the new price then?

Need to know what @jgolf1 learned and who I need to coordinate with, but will update when I find out more!

This was just announced last night so i’m still working on getting the information around. I’ll end up being the point man on this but apparently they are able to invoice to the person and drop ship directly to the customer which is truly awesome.

putting out the bat signal for Central Ohioans. i moved down here back in September so it didn’t seem pertinent then but as the weather breaks i’m getting the itch. i’m just north of Upper Arlington and i work in Polaris so really the 3 closest to me are OSU, York and Brookside, so luckily i have 3 amazingly accessible, super affordable and extremely public courses right there. wondering if there’s anything else that comes recommended. i know costs are all rising but ideally someplace where i can walk on weekdays in that $30-40 range that isn’t a complete pasture. any good driving ranges would be greatly appreciated as well

Welcome!

Mill Creek is a bit north of Dublin, usually in decent shape, cheap and walkable. It was/is owned by Ben Curtis’s family so an interesting bit of history there.

The city courses aren’t bad if they’re not packed, typically a get what you pay for deal which is generally fair. Mentel is usually the least crowded of the bunch.

Darby Creek out towards Marysville is interesting as well, more modern but a fun course and kept in good shape.
