Punching them today I believe - that is what the alert says on their online booking platform. “Aeration on 3/11/25 - Greens have been punched and top dressed.”
Any experience with Traditions GC? Considering joining but it’s a bit of a track from where I am in Hyde Park.
I played the front 9 a couple years ago. Fun course in good shape. Solid practice facilities. A bit spread out, so maybe not the easiest walk from what I remember but doable?
Overall I really enjoyed it
So I was thinking this year’s (yet to be decided) match play champion would be on the team this fall, but maybe I was wrong in thinking we could be done with match play in time for the regional?
We generally don’t have it done in time, especially with Ohio spring being a crap shoot.
I don’t think that should be a problem, every year so far we’ve had groups not play any of their matches until the last minute and had to give some extension. We need to set a schedule and stick to it. If you can one of your groups schedules don’t match up post it in the main page and both people have to play the same course with one other refuge member that keeps them honest, " not that I don’t believe most of y’all would lie but who knows nowadays", and as long as both guys play that course on the same tees with a witness give each other your scores and let keep this thing going. I believe the groups we played against last year at the regional all had their match play champion there and Michigan and Canada both have shitty weather just like northern Ohio.
Its easy to set the schedule, sticking to it is hard if you’ve got a full time job in Cleveland and can only play weekends and it rains 2 weeks in a row then you each have a kids birthday party. There’s absolutely luck involved in getting these matches in. But if you’re going to get into this thing, you need to actually look at your summer and make sure you’re not going to be out of town or unavailable for multiple weeks in a row. There’s nothing wrong with a busy lifestyle, but if if you can only play weekdays or something that is going to make it insanely hard. I’m not taking a vacation day to play a match at a muni for nothing (now if there’s an invite to somewhere very cool and private, we can talk).
The time and travel commitment of match play really limits who can sign up and be involved, which is why I don’t think the winner should automatically get one of the four spots. Giving them points that give them a good chance to make the team feels right, because of that effort and commitment. We didn’t even give the Findlay event winner an auto spot last year, but the amount of points Joe got for it allowed him to still make the team while only playing in that one event. One day events allow more folks to schedule ahead of time and make it work, so I’d like to encourage more participation in those events with the incentive of making the RCC team if they show up to events (and probably having to play good in one or two).
If we’re being honest, whoever wins the match play will very likely make the team if they want to by just showing up one or two more times. I don’t think that’s asking a whole lot of someone when there is a chance at a very cheap 2-3 trip to sweetens on the line
I agree with this comment Matt, Findlay event gets an NIT spot which is a solid reward and I got a lot of points for winning but that was sadly the only event I played in. I feel like playing A LOT of matches in the match play will get you enough points to qualify but i do think there should be a reward for playing in more events/matches AND playing well. Participation is cool.
Also, RCC will be in the greater Pittsburgh area the second weekend in August.
Legit question: what events are on the calendar this year?
Besides Match Play and Findlay, I haven’t seen confirmations for any non-limited OATW events (Springfield and Rust Belt Rumble are confirmed but very limited fields)
I know there were discussions around some others (Tiki, Top of the Rock, etc.) but maybe I missed anything else being confirmed.
But bottom line: it gets really tough for some of us to participate and earn a spot if we miss one event.
I might try and run back Tiki at the Kiki. I can also host 7 people if we want to do a smaller meet up at LFCC in NEO.
Strong agree with everything already said. The point system is designed to encourage participation along with level of play.
The current system weights Findlay the most, then match play, then other events. I will add that participation in other roost events is also rewarded.
In addition, the system from last year is not static. I like the idea of encouraging more small scale events like @Browcoww77 brought up. We could easily add points for mini events participants. Also, we could look at a point per nest member you share a tee time with through the season (one point per person). The down side of this is that it is going to be much more important for the individual to document these in a timely manner. I can track down points for large events, but the one offs would be impossible.
One other question I have for the group is if we have any market research on how other roosts do their qualifying. Not that we need to copy theirs, but we can certainly draw inspiration.
One other thing I will add is that we don’t do a great job of planning events as a roost. Part of that is not setting a calendar until the season kicks off. We may all benefit from scheduling 2026 events before the end of 2025. This allows everyone to plan better for their family and golf schedules. It seems like a lot of the time we struggle for dates because people have pre committed to other roost events. I definitely don’t see it as a negative, but I think our event participation levels reflect that.
Folks, I hope you have been able to get out and enjoy this weather. I played hookie this morning and played Yankee Trace. 18 holes in a little over 3 hours. Finished birdie-birdie.
5 minutes til the final bell rings and I am headed straight to the course
I played yesterday in Central Ohio. Course was in surprisingly good shape. Not much roll in the fairways but they weren’t squishy at all. Greens were perfectly fine for mid March too.
Where did you play? A quick glance at places earlier this week seemed like quite a few are already charging full freight
Turnberry in Pickerington. It was a steal for $37 riding 18
