Walked Stonelick yesterday for $51 bucks; was probably not worth it - soggy fairways are to be expected, but the first hole fairway was completely closed and the hole made into an 80y par-3 for now. Another temp tee box on 6 hitting off of a mat from 100y. Greens were rough. Was awesome to be out on March 9, but not worth the price (definitely would not be worth $75 to ride). And the range strictly does not open before April.
Hit the new driver pretty well, though, and was just thrilled to be outside!
Courses bring so much ill will on themselves by making you pay full freight for rounds where the course isnât in anything close to playing shape. Iâll never understand it
Anyone else read the article about Medina Country Club getting a reversible 9-hole âexecutiveâ course? I say âexecutiveâ in quotes because its only going to be a par 31 and its on the land leftover from 6 original holes, but they donât call it executive in the article in Crains.
They reference both the Old Course and Forest Dunesâs Loop when talking about it. However, as far as I know, Medina CC is private, so this canât compare to those as it wonât be available for public play and it isnât a full size course.
If you are local, Have you tried Lassing Pointe? I believe it was $30 cheaper than Stonelick last year.
I think they are very similar at this point. Stonelick is (perhaps was) is more photogenic and manicured around the hazards. Lassing has some shagy muni vibes around some hazards, but I think the greens are better.
My very uneducated hypothesis is Stonelick gets a lot of golf bro play, and Lassing has a more respectful older clinetele that respects the facility. Pretty sure Stonelick crams an extra tee time in every hour too.
Am local, I have a buddy who plays Lassing all the time. Heard great things and excited to hopefully play it this summer. Kentucky has some of my favorites to go back to. Hickory Sticks is fun, Devou Iâve played several times, and would like another shot at The Willows this year.
Will still happen this year but fewer of them at Sleepy and Kiki. With the changing family dynamics ended up doing junior membership somewhere, so will be playing most weekends there besides the weeks they have events. Happy to host anytime tho! Will still be posting open slots the weekends I end up booking at the metro parks.
Iâm 10 minutes from Devou and Kenton County if you ever need an extra guy.
I donât have a lot of good stuff to say about Willows. The Back 9 is just too damn long, and they wonât have conversations with slow groups about moving up to a the gold.
The asshole that promised it would be up âsoonâ promises he will get it posted. It will probably be a separate thread.
I He has some logo work, write up, and get it set up in unknown.
It will be like last year with OATW nest members who havenât played in previous years get priority. But for the repeat offenders, it will open up probably around May 1st.
I have been out of the loop a little bit but plan to get it up and running again #soon.
I intended to reset the points starting with the Cincy event. This does leave the matchplay finalist without getting an extra perk. Basically by team selection time, the top four in the match play will have points equating to an extra event with a strong performance.
While I do like the idea of this, I donât know if I would give an auto-bid. I could see a set points boost as the reigning champion, but the order of merit is to encourage play at multiple events. I believe to make the team last year you had to pretty much win Findlay or do well in 3-4 other events (including the matchplay). I would have to go back and check my notes but I donât think Findlay was an auto bid, but with that and other participation, it was a huge head start.
The only two downsides of letting the prior year winner get an automatic entry is that it may not be reflective of the best current season play. Additionally, it is a different format than the regionals, so it may be better to take the more holistic look instead of the single format. But we can always settle it with a vote.
Should the reigning matchplay champion receive automatic entry
Yes
No
They should receive points to help with qualifying but need to also show up in this years events.
Fair point. I did like the front a good bit more. It was a strange weather day when I played, got a mix of sun, total cloud cover, rain, wind, you name it.
15 is the roller coaster fairway that goes over the pond right? Itâs certainlyâŚmemorable?
I got the pdf of the article sent to me, but they built the short, reversible course last year. Par 31, they did most of the seeding in the fall, but it wonât be playable til about mid-late summer they said. Dave Zinkand did the design and apparently there are two double greens.
The club is in a 4 phase update, with the big indoor practice thing being phase 1, this short course phase 2, then their new clubhouse is 3, and a full course renovation phase 4. Golf at Medina is apparently doing very well in the realm of 500 members too.
