Roll Call: North Carolina

Just got pricing back from Pinehurst… $410 for #2 and $330 for #4… So not much of a discount with the virus going on

Well, they’re still busy don’t you worry… just less busy than usual so not much need for them to discount.

If you’re just dying to play at Pinehurst you can get on courses other than 2 or 4 for much less (though i understand those two are the most desirable to play if you’re coming from out of town).

Check out all the other ones in the area too like Southern Pines GC, Talamore, Mid Pines/Pine Needles, TR, etc. Might as well make it a 36 hole day if you hike all the way up to Pinehurst.

Thanks, what courses around the Wilmington area do you all enjoy other than the muni?

Cape Fear National, Carolina National (about 30-45 min drive), North Shore (another 30-40 min drive, this time of year should be in good shape, first few holes play along intercoastal)

Porter’s Neck is pretty good though they are going through a restructuring (McConnell is taking over management).

Rivers Edge, Oyster Bay, Thistle, Pearl E and W, Sandpiper Bay, Leopards Chase, Crow Creek, and Farmstead are further south but all good.

Just echoing @Double_Bogey_Dave’s comments about the courses a little further south. Rivers Edge and Thistle are very nice. Lockwood Folly is a bit closer but no idea what shape it’s in now. And I think Carolina National has a walking special for like $28 or something.

Also, once this is all behind us, an open invite for any NC folks or visitors to play Cape Fear National. Of course you can always play it on your own, but guest fee is $45 as opposed to normal $90.

Once it clears up Wilm is top of my list as I need to play the muni, CFCC, and see my sister (in some order…). Would love to add another course to that itinerary and see what I can do to invite some close, personal (internet) friends to CFCC with me.

I just donated to the Strapped Charity Fundraiser, chose Winston-Salem since it’s closest to me in Gboro. Been thinking about what courses would be on the itinerary, I’m thinking Oak Hollow fits the bill nicely as a muni and a Pete Dye, maybe Cardinal if they want more Dye. I know it’s not Winston, but Forest Oaks might be cool as a former Tour course. I’m not as familiar with whats around the immediate Winston area, anyone have good ones for Strapped?

I have always enjoyed Castle Bay North Shore is excellent The Muni is the best

I think the consensus #1 is Tanglewood Championship as it hosted PGA Championship and 15yrs of Tour stop (until they banned tobacco from sponsoring tournaments) then Oak Hollow and Cardinal/Forest Oaks could be good to get them back to GSO to fly out.

Sidenote: was going to suggest that in order to give us the best chance to get them to NC that we maybe take a vote between us and all pool our donations to either Winston/Raleigh/CLT instead of some of us donating between them. I think if we all teamed up for one of them we could have a good chance of winning!

none of the courses you mentioned are in WS though and nobody wants more Dye…

if you are looking for something in actual WS, Reynolds Park has to be on the list though…it fits the bill of a Strapped course perfectly, has good history and is a true muni

as mentioned, tanglewood would be another WS location worth visiting and would be a decent back story to share with its PGA tour history, etc

oak hollow would obviously fit the bill for Strapped if they expanded outside of WS and went full on Triad

also, id love to see them visit Gillespie in GSO personally…thats another place that truly fits the Strapped vibe, has great people involved and the history of not only being a Maxwell design, but also being right in the middle of the civil rights movement, a lost 9, etc would be a worth sharing to the world

Strapped could be done in any of the 3 locations.

RDU
Hillandale
Umstead Pines
Pine Hollow
Wildwood Green
UNC Finley (afternoon walking)
*Mill Creek
Caswell Pines
*Goodyear

Triad
Tanglewood
Reynolds Park
Bryan Park
Oak Hollow
Forest Oaks
Winston Lake

CLT
Sifford
Monroe
Ft Mill
Mooresville

*Goodyear and Mill Creek could also be part of GSO/Winston

Fair, but I think there’s more people in those areas and I’d rather have NC strapped than not because I was stubborn…

goodyear is awesome, definitely would put it in WS and its closer, but its not even in NC…too many good strapped courses in NC to be driving into VA

mill creek is definitely Triad > Triangle

of course there are more people in raleigh and CLT than WS or the triad

Mebane is literally halfway between GSO and Durham.

It’s not required they stay within the city limits, neither Rocky Point or Greystone are in Baltimore, with Greystone being 30 minutes north of Baltimore City proper.

I’d love a strapped road trip that hits CLT, Triad, and the Triangle.
