I have a couple buddies coming down for a visit from MN and am looking to take them to a few courses. I joined a club when I moved down and have not gotten out much. What are the best budget options in the Pinehurst area, and how about mountain golf within reasonable driving distance from CLT?
Was thinking of playing me club one day, golfnow a place like Eagle Chase one day, and drive either to Pinehurst or the mountains for a round.
Itâs been a few years since Iâve played there, but Cleghorn Plantation west of Charlotte is awesome. Mountain golf vibes and very laid back.
I know this is a hotly debated issue, but I have always enjoyed playing Olde Beau in Roaring Gap. Not a bad drive and has great views. Fun little course in my opinion.
Warrior in China Grove is also an enjoyable day. Always solid greens a very low key vibe. Weekend rounds can get frustrating from a pace of play standpoint.
Budget options in Pinehurst? That is a matter of relativity. Closest budget option in Highland Golf Club which is a lot of fun and in improving condition every day. Good people too. You can always go to Tot Hill Farm. Probably about 150-175 bucks but is a wild ride!
Hyland would be my top choice but Quail Ridge, Legacy, Foxfire (Red/Grey) are the other âbudget friendlyâ courses. In thhe future, if you want budget friendly golf, I highly suggest Triad region. You can occasionally find golf moose deals for the latter two options though in Pinehurst area. The mountains sounds lovely though and I would have a hard time picking budget Pinehurst courses over the mountains lol.
Iâll be in Carolina next weekend - planning to go to UNC/Pitt game, for reasons.
I know tailgating scene is rough in Chapel Hill (we typically make it out for a game every other year, or so, and usually for a marquee game - e.g., NCSU, Notre Dame - but this year the calendar allows for Pitt) but any chance anyone around this corner of the internet will be on campus and/or tailgating and/or have any tips for a better gameday experience than just taking the shuttle onto campus and taking the same picture in front of the same landmarks before walking into the stadium and then just getting back on the shuttle and leaving?
Iâve always been disappointed in Franklin Streetâs gameday atmosphere, so hoping weâve just been doing it wrongâŚ
Extremely normal. Great bball team but there is very rarely juice. If they beat duke they do their best big SEC football win charade but it aint the same.
Obviously everything is horrible in Asheville and news has been tricking out for a few days, making it difficult to totally grasp the severity of the devastation. I was there until Saturday afternoon, but with no cell service or electricity, I didnât know what was going on beyond my own street.
Golf is about the furthest thing from anyoneâs mind here, but because this is a golf community and because these pictures will help show the scale of the flooding that happened, here are a couple drone shots of Asheville Muni.
These were taken Friday around noon by local filmmaker Paul Bonesteel. He did the documentary on Muni that came out a few years ago that you can find on YouTube.
The entire front 9, except for hole 9 was totally underwater.
Wish I could do more to help, but sending you and your neighbors in that region all the strength and caring we can. I made many friends from Asheville at a wedding this year, and itâs just heartbreaking to see what all has happened and is still happening there.
Hey folks - as everyone knows WNC got rocked by the Hurricane last week⌠I am a part of a group called Twilight Golf Club (think not for profit golf society based in NC, @twilightgolfnc on IG) and we are hosting an online raffle and auction this week to raise funds for Samaritans Purse and crisis aid.
You can find more about it at the link below but there are rounds at Old Town, Forsyth, Sedgefield, Old North State, Tot Hill Farm and many more, passes to Bristol Speedway, SWEETENS COVE and raffle tickets with prizes like B Draddy, Imperial, Zero Restriction and lots others.
I am looking for some guidance from the fine people of the triangle. I posted in here about 6 months ago asking for some suggestions on building a golf trip to the Raleigh Durham area. Well, we are less than 3 weeks away from the trip! Just need some suggestions on a few last minute things. Open to suggestions on anything!
Thurs Oct 24: Arrival and play either Pine Hollow or Heritage or Umstead. Dinner somewhere, then probably play some night golf at Knights Play.
Friday Oct 25: 36 holes at Duke University Golf Course. Dinner in Durham (Have a reservation at Little Bull, but open to suggestions)
Saturday Oct 26: Looking for a breakfast spot somewhere between our rental in Cary and our golf that day at Finley at UNC. Dinner reservation at Angus Barn.
Sunday Oct 27: Golf at either Pine Hollow/Heritage/or Umstead. Head to airport
So, any suggestions are choosing between Pine Hollow/Heritage/Umstead? Suggestions on some restaurants? Any non golf related activities we should check out? I usually try to find some kind of non golf related activity to fill up an hour or two for our group. A couple possible activities I saw when searching around were Downtown Cary Park, one of the museums, or hitting up a spa for a pre round massage. Suggestion said Adara Spa was decently priced. Any museum suggestions?
Pine Hollow > Umstead > Heritage (honestly itâs been a very long time since I was at heritage, it might be in decent shape)
Iâm a member of the art museum and highly recommend it if youâre into art, itâs got a really nice park. I believe the NC museum is History is closed for renovation/addition, the Science Museum is good, theyâre currently working on a new T-Rex & triceratops exhibit where you can basically see an archaeological dig of those 2 dinosaurs.
The downtown Cary Park is really nice, plenty of bars and restaurants in short walking distance. No recommendations on spa, I know Umstead is the gold standard, but very pricey, would be interested to hear your experience at Adara if you go. All the university campuses are worth a visit if youâre into that sort of thing, Duke probably has the most character and it pains me to say that Carolina is a little nicer than State, but all are a good place for a walk just depends on which part of the triangle they youâre in.
Brigs is a great local breakfast restaurant chain (give yourself plenty of time, theyâre always busy on weekends), then if youâre in need of fast food breakfast Bojangles and Biscuitville are the (oft debated) chains of choice.
The wife and I went to Little Bull a few months back and it has some of the best tapas weâve had outside of Spain. Durham is super fun, bunch of breweries and bars. We actually spent some time at The Velvet Hippo bar this past Saturday and couldnât recommend it enough, very viby.
Edit: Also, if you can, jump on to Hillandale, its a good public track in Durham. If you do get on, GET THE TACOS. Those ladies crank em out.
