Roll Call: North Carolina

@rkris - In the coming “Duel for Eleanor’s Honor”, I volunteer as your second.

I have thoughts, but am saving for the next time my laptop is turned in bc as a Gen X’er I’m not doing this with two thumbs.

Also, @Smidler, I’d be happy for your secondary—just remember that you’re first job is to try and prevent the duel from taking place according to the code duello (Code Duello: The Rules of Dueling | American Experience | Official Site | PBS, or you can read almost 700 pages of Bertram Wyatt-Brown’s Southern Honor: Ethics and Behavior in the Old South—your choice).

Do we need a non-fiction book thread? I’d be all in on that

Haha @Smidler thought he was signing up for a comfy pairing and ended up getting homework.

Had a lesson booked with Tom Ream at Prestonwood for Saturday. He emailed me saying its going to be cold (20’s in the AM) to confirm if I want to brave the cold or reschedule.

This will be my first lesson with Tom, so I don’t have an idea of what is their learning center like, he said the bay doors will be open. I play year round and don’t mind a little cold, but don’t want to waste a lesson either. Any thoughts on their set up?

I’ve gotten fit there before. You’ll be hitting off a mat out a garage door. He’s got trackman, not sure if there are heaters or not. But it’ll be cold

Probably all depends on whether the wind is into you or not, I don’t recall there being heaters.

Appreciate it, I’ll probably reschedule, and hope for a warmer day in a future weekend🤣

The hitting bay does get a lot of sun. I’ve taken lessons there in the low 30s and was ok. Not sure about low 20’s though.

Hey gang, long time/first time. Live in Durham, have a membership at UNC Finley, also play a lot at Mill Creek, Challenge, Umstead Pines and Duke – that’s probably the meat of my rota, but I play all over from the Triad to the Sandhills. Lots of weekday rounds given my unusual work schedule.

Rumors abound that Finley is going to close for a major renovation this year, so I’m preemptively looking around at other options for a club. Curious for any input on Croasdaile and Treyburn – particularly the membership experience. I’m 39, so time is ticking to take advantage of the junior executive initiation fee at Croasdaile, especially since they’re about to jack the initiation fees way up. Curious for the age demographics at those two clubs as well. I’m really all about the golf — no kids and my wife doesn’t play, so wondering if the private club experience is really worth the cost (but that’s probably a bigger question for another day!).

Thanks.

If you are just about the golf, give Treyburn a hard look. The golf course is really good and fun to play. It’s always in great shape, and being a member at a McConnell course will get you access to Sedgefield, Old North State Club, Raleigh CC, Wakefield, and a bunch of other good ones that are semi-local.

I’m at Croasdaile and love it. I’m not sure the economics ever work out, but I came for the golf course and stay for all the friends I’ve made. There’s certainly a contingent of retired guys but the club has gotten a good bit younger in the last several years. I’m 45 and am average to slightly above average age-wise in the group I play with.

I’d be happy to have you out, once the weather is a little better. Let me know if you have any other questions.

When it comes to good course Treyburn and Croasdaile both qualify. Treyburn is by far the most inconvenient place to get from proshop to the tee I can recall. The clubhouse is a huge waste of money and space but that is McConnell’s problem. I would say Treyburn is a better course but Croasdaile is certainly more convenient and always in tip top shape. Not a bad decision to have to make IMO

I’m mid 30s in Durham and went through this decision last Spring and settled on Treyburn and am very happy with it. I think it’s the best course I have played in town and another benefit I love about Treyburn compared to previous clubs/friends’ clubs is the pace of play and easy ability to get on anytime without much notice. The tee sheet is pretty open on weekends and almost empty on most weekday afternoons. I haven’t gotten involved enough yet in MGA/events to speak to that (had to have wrist surgery soon after joining), but the members I’ve met golfing have all been good experiences. I see enough younger members around I think the age distribution is pretty solid. The other big benefit is the access to other McConnell properties.

The drawbacks are 1) possibly location, it’s a bit out there depending on where you live and not really near anything except the Treyburn corporate park. 2) it’s pretty much golf only, though that’s all I wanted and sounds like what you’re looking for. They have most of the other amenities normal Club amenities (pool/gym/tennis) but I’ve never seen anyone use the gym or tennis courts, and the dining room is closed a lot of the time and when it’s open isn’t really much of a dining experience.

Let me know if you’d like any more info on Treyburn, and I’d also be happy to host anytime if you want to check it out.

Played there today (i’m a Wakefield member) and probably the biggest draw is the availability on the tee sheet. Courses are so packed nowadays that it’s nice to be able to roll out there and essentially play whenever you want.

@stevearrowood @redsox3g2 (and also Taffy and Patrick – I’m new so it won’t let me tag more than two people) – You guys are awesome, thank you all for the input, and for the invitations – very kind. For me both courses have lots of draws; Croasdaile is a little closer to me (10 mins) but not a huge factor, Treyburn is 20 mins. Treyburn’s McConnell reciprocity is attractive because I do golf on work trips all around the Southeast quite a bit, plus the excellent McConnell offerings in Greensboro and Raleigh are easily accessible from Durham. Sounds like both Treyburn and Croasdaile are fantastic courses; look forward to exploring them both.

Live in Treyburn Forest and have been debating about joining Treyburn myself, are you nearby?

Unfortunately not, I am about 20 minutes away which doesn’t matter much during a day I play a round but does limit my ability to get in a quick practice session.

Hey all, quick question because I’m new to the Refuge in general. I’m trying to make sure I’m in the First Flight group here (already in the WhatsApp chat) so I don’t get left off of anything by mistake. Do I need to be added by someone already in that group? @Double_Bogey_Dave , can you help a brother out?
