Roll Call: North Carolina

If one wanted to be generous, it is possible that the people putting that data together did a less than great job a tracing development.

For instance, does that info mean that it was redesigned in 1972 or built in 1972?

Another site attributes the course to Maples in 1956.

My in-laws grew up just north of Chockoyotte on Lake Gaston. My father-in-law is 81 and his mind isn’t as sharp as it once was, so take this with a grain of salt. His recollection is, the club plans were developed prior to WW2 but were put on hold until well after the war.

This would make sense considering Ellis Maples worked for Donald Ross prior to Ross’ death in 1948. It’s entirely possible, Ross designed the course, or part of the course, prior to WW2 and Maples finished the design and oversaw construction. Or at least that’s my FIL’s memory.

My FIL also recalls Ed Seay possibly adding a set of back tees to lengthen the course in the 1970’s. I’d be interested to know the factual history to see how accurate my FIL’s memory from his childhood is.

I think that’s a pretty sound theory. Maples finished other Ross works.

Hello NC golfers. Moved back down to NC (in the Winston-Salem/Kernersville area) from Iowa and have set some roots down. Looking forward to playing more courses around here. Have played the smaller shaggy courses in the area but wanting to find a ā€œhomeā€ course. Looking forward to lots of golf this coming year. Cheers!

Welcome. There are a bunch of us in the triad area. If you are looking for a public track to be your home course you can’t go wrong with Tanglewood Champions.
Meadowlands is not a bad track but conditions can be bad in the summer (bent greens).
Olde Home Place is a decent cheap round.
Head over to Greensboro and play Bryan Park. 36 holes. Both courses are good.
Forrest Oaks is also a good round. One of the few that can keep bent greens running good year round.
In High Point are you have Jamestown as a nice round with some fantastic Bermuda greens.
Join the CLC chat to find rounds. Guys usually will post openings all week long.

This is great info, much appreciated! Gotta start making a list…

Welcome! I’ll add to what @grizzly224 said, I also like Cardinal in Greensboro. Like Forest Oaks, they keep their bent greens running even in the heat of summer. Also they are well underway on a bunker renovation, goodbye thin sand and red clay, installing proper liners and all new sand. They do have public times available but I’m happy to host and get you the guest rate of $35

Now I have gotten to play Forest Oaks twice, that was a treat. Just from taking a quick glance, Cardinal looks gorgeous. Much nicer than the courses I typically played previously. I’ll definitely keep that in mind, looks like I’ll have to check it out.

Cardinal is a fantastic course but it can be challenging. It is a Pete Dye that has, what Dye calls, the hardest part 3 he ever designed. It is a semi-private that is an outstanding value

Let me be the third to suggest the cardinal. It’s the best public option in Greensboro in my opinion.

Don’t sleep on Reynolds in Winston!

Anyone seen a show in wilmington at Live Oak Bank Pavilion?

Bought tickets to a shot there Sept 3 and trying to figure out if its worth the extra money to stay within walking distance of the venue or just stay somewhere outside and uber in and save the money and play golf somewhere instead?

Been to a few shows there since it opened. Ubering is a nightmare if you want to get dropped off at the gates. Best bet would be find public parking somewhere near LOP or Uber somewhere else DT Wilmington to pregame and then walk to the show. They’re still doing lots of construction around it so it gets bottlenecked in the immediate vicinity pretty easily

this is exactly what I was looking for many many thanks

It’s a really easy walk from downtown as well. Get a hotel down there and just walk down.

#8 stinks. Rest of the course :ok_hand:t2:

Turns out I live ~10 minutes from Reynolds Park. I’ll be checking that out possibly this weekend if the weather holds up. So happy to not be in Iowa right now where I wouldn’t think of golf until late April. (deepest condolences to my IA homies)
