Roll Call: North Carolina

I’m sure there is some trouble in Cheraw to be found - - you may find it a working vacation!

Not licensed in SC. They frown on unlicensed practice in SC.

Heading to Raleigh mid next month with the girlfriend and have a good bit of time I’ll have to kill alone, looking for course recommendations!

There’s ten thousand locals on here who will give you better advice but Lonnie Poole is a personal favorite. I really like Keith Hills about an hour down the road. Pine Hollow is in Clayton and is solid.

Umstead Pines is another fan favorite I’ve seen.

Have a buddy who just joined Greensboro CC and he’s taking me out to the Farm Course next weekend. Any of y’all ever play out there? If so, how is it? Got to play their other Ross course as wedding perk a few years back but gonna be the first time out at the Farm. Heard rumblings that it may be great.

Pine Hollow and Lonnie Poole are the best public options in Raleigh. The Neuse is also good from what I hear.

In Durham it’s Duke, Hillandale, Umstead, and Occoneechee.

Chapel Hill has Finley.

What I’d recommend is spending the hour drive to go to the Sandhills and get out at Tobacco Road (40 minutes) Mid Pines, Pine Needles, Pinehurst, Longleaf, or Hyland.

Mill Creek in Mebane is good, but it’s about the same distance from much of Raleigh as the Sandhills.

It’s pretty solid. Good mix of holes and a good walk. Enjoy!

That course is silly underrated. I always forget how good it is until I get invited back. Zoysia fairways so you never get a bad lie and big ass bunkers with bright white sand that remind me of Augusta. Make sure you look at the yardages because is is LONG. I think 7400 from the back. One of those courses you can’t go “I usually play the tips so I’ll go back there”, you’ll get your teeth kicked in haha

Love it! Even more stoked now. Will make sure we play the one (two) ups in that case. Not that I don’t love getting my teeth kicked in every now and then, but for sure looking to enjoy the walk. Haven’t been able to find or hear much about it, but knew I could get the run-down here.

Just so happy I’m at the age now that I have friends who are getting those “Young Executive” club memberships that I can take advantage of.

The zoyzia makes u think u can hit driver off the deck. You should hit solid irons for sure. Greens usually excellent. Solid layout. You can make birdies but trouble awaits too. I love the course but as with most it is because I have played it well. Drive it in the fairway and hit greens!

I think all the recs have been shared, once you figure out what works best for you throw a note in here. I am sure we could find some folks to give you some company out there if you are looking for some!

Thinking I’m gonna go with either Pine Hollow or The Neuse! Not gonna be there till July 17th so definitely some time to plan

If you’re heading that direction River Ridge is good too and just a few mins closer to Raleigh. I would rank them:

  1. Pine Hollow (good walk, good conditions)
  2. River Ridge (don’t walk, funky holes/dog legs, good conditions)
  3. The Neuse (don’t walk, better layout than RR, conditions are good enough)

PS - Call each pro shop about their aeration schedule because June/July is prime for that down here.

Loving North Carolina this week.

How good is

Great days golf.

Next stop Pinehurst.

Got my wife with me this trip but will make sure to hook up later this year. Back on the road tripping now.

I just joined the Refuge and saw your post. I also live in Asheville. Mostly play Muni, Black Mountain. It’s be cool to get together with other NLU folks.
