If you do take the I-81 / I-77 corridor from Leesburg to Columbia, it’s a pretty easy hour-long jump over to Pinehurst and Tobacco Road if you have the time. Several bucket list options in my opinion.
If time is more of a factor, Olde Mill and/or Primland along the North Carolina - Virginia border offers stunning views from atop the Appalachian Mountains right along the Eastern Continental Divide. Both are right along I-77.
I was thinking the same thing. The closest I-77 gets to Pinehurst is about 2 hrs, maybe just under.
If I was heading from Columbia to Virginia Beach and had a few days I would take US-1. First stop would be Cheraw State Park Golf Course and then spend the night in Pinehurst. Play Mid Pines and Pine Needles the next day. Spend another night. Get back up and head up US-1 to Tobacco Road before heading out to VB.
The closest you’ll get is CLT and it’s at least 2+ hrs from there and out of the way of COLA. If you’re doing Leesburg to pinehurst to cola 95 is the route
And you can hit New Kent (Strantz) between richmond and williamsburg
From I-77 in Mount Airy, take I-74 straight to route 211.
I agree, if the destinations are Leesburg, VA Beach and Columbia in that order. It was my understanding from the original post, he was going to be traveling from Leesburg to Columbia then back to VA Beach. Leesburg to Columbia, via I-95 is significantly longer than I-81 - I-77.
